Fun question: If there's a deadly sin that each member (plus Flynn) of Brave Vesperia is or potentially guilty of what would you pick? For example I could picture Yuri embodying wrath if he went down a darker path or envy for Flynn.

That’s a good question!  I actually wrote about this before but I’ve thought about it more since then, and someone else also responded with their ideas but I cannot remember who it was I’M SORRY they were really good though.  

Also my interpretation of the deadly sins is very much influenced by FMA.  

Yuri as wrath is a good fit.  He has a lot of anger at the world and it’s what drives him to violence.  He doesn’t have the wild, bloodlust sort of violence seen in Zagi, but a controlled fire of pinpointed anger.  

Estelle is gluttony.  She’s hungry for knowledge and pursues it even to the point of endangering the others.  Gluttony can also be interpreted as selfishness, and Estelle is called out for being selfish in her desires and bossing the others around to serve her whims.  On a more physical level, her power consumes far too much aer and leads to the Adephagos - which literally means ‘the glutenous.”

Karol is envy, who is always trying to achieve what others have.  He wants to be respected in the Hunting Blades, he wants to be cool like Yuri, he wants power like the Don.  He wishes he was braver and stronger, always comparing himself to others.  

Raven is sloth - his apathy and failure and do anything about Alexei’s plans led directly to Estelle’s abuse and subsequently Zaude and the Adephagos.  He saw what Alexei was doing and chose not to intervene.

Rita is pride.  She is very sure of her intelligence and isn’t afraid to show it.  She goes with Yuri to the Shaikos Ruins to clear her name because it hurt her pride to let Yuri think she was a thief.  Then whenever “scary” things come up, like on the Atherum or her fear of heights, she’s too proud to admit when she’s scared. 

Judith is lust, but not in a sexual desire way.  I don’t think anyone in the cast is guilty of lust in that sense (except maybe Raven when he’s being Like That).  I’m basing this on the idea of lust as hedonism, acting on desire.  As she says to Yuri after the Sword Stair, before she joined the group, she and Ba’ul were just flying around, not really thinking of anything.  She acted on impulse, destroying the Hermes blastia “because I wanted to,” to clean up her father’s mistakes, rather than out of a sense of duty to the world.  She also demonstrates blood lust in her love of fighting and battles.  She just does what feels right to her and makes her happy at the time.

Lastly, Flynn is greed, although this is the one I’m least sure of.  I heavily debated giving him pride, because his major fault in the game is being so sure that he’s in the right and failing to question his actions after Alexei gives him orders.  I feel like Flynn’s real major sins are stubbornness and getting too caught up in the big picture to pay attention to important details, but those were never specifically condemned by the Catholic church.  So I’m basing this on the FMA interpretation of greed of wanting to make things yours.  Flynn wants power so he can bring all the people he cares about under his protection.  Yuri is his friend, so even if he has committed crimes, Flynn will deal with it himself.  The lower quarter, the Imperial Knights, his brigade, the whole empire - these things are his and he will protect them, and he will fight anyone he tries to take these things.  

Repede has no sins because all dogs go to heaven.

Sometimes, I love to imagine how Alternative Characters could see the events of the "canon" timelile, just because their reactions would be either angsty, either hilarous. Like Sam (Alt!Flynn) what he would think if he could see the events of Zaude from Flynn and Yuri's world (like on a tv?XD) ? I mean it was very different of what happened in his world: Alexei who tries to kill Yuri, Flynn who protect Yuri with his body, Sodia who stabs Yuri. Sam would be like (:o)

It all depends on what part of Sam's story is at, I think!

I think that pre-change Sam would have mixed feelings; although he believes Alexei is in the right, as he aligned with his beliefs no matter what, he would be torn at seeing Yuri at the forefront of the combat. I think a mix of betrayal (Yuri opposing Alexei AND Alexei trying to hurt Yuri) and conflict would be the heart of his view here. He doesn't have context, but he sees his beloved Yuri and his father figure opposing one another and he doesn't know what to do.

Nightfoot would probably give a better answer though 😂

I’ve been thinking about this for a while but, what if at the scene where Yuri throws the core to Flynn in Dahngrest and just, misses. Or Flynn fumbles and it disappears into the water, never to be seen again

But seriously, Yuri would probably be pissed if Flynn fumbled it or he himself misthrew. I totally picture a whole nother arc of finding another core happening, all the while Yuri's wondering who else he's cheating out of their blastia in order to help the Lower Quarter out.

If you could rewrite some events of the ToV, witch ones would you choose? And how would you change them?

Hmm, a pretty tough question!

There are quite a few, but admittedly most are ones that Nightfoot has listed before. He’s elaborated on so many points that I more or less agree with, but in particular:

Raven’s ‘death’. It felt very cheap and very rushed to make it seem like he died, only for him to pop back up right after they got out. I personally love Raven, and this moment still affected me, but I think at least playing into the idea of his death for a while longer would have made his sacrifice a lot more impactful to players.

Yuri’s hypocrisy with Judith. I don’t think this is talked about a lot, but I suppose it also plays into his flawed way of thinking as well. He is furious when Estelle begs him to kill her, because he doesn’t believe she deserves to die (even though her death would mean Alexei could be stopped, her power would stop harming Entelexeia, etc) - he doesn’t want to kill an innocent girl. However, when Judith runs away to protect Ba’ul, he threatens to kill her if she doesn’t tell the truth. Maybe I could be remembering this wrong, but it has ALWAYS sat wrong with me; so flippantly throwing out a threat to Judith because she acted suspiciously, but forgiving Raven (who kidnapped Estelle, caused countless problems for the group, and was overall heaps more shady than Judith ever was), refusing to kill Estelle even though it was seemingly the only way at the time to save her / solve the issue, it just doesn’t add up and it’s one of my biggest problems with the story. 

Also another petty nitpick but all the time sensitive title quests.... really.... not story relevant but annoying

But, it also does hide very interesting canon material that you don’t learn unless you do the quests. big huff

I’d also keep Patty out of the game - might be controversial, but in full honesty I feel she really has nothing to add. Vesperia’s cast still stands today as my personal favorite of all the Tales games, and so adding Patty on honestly weakens the strength of the team. I really wish she was relevant to the plot and not just wedged in, but she is. ):

It Waits

It isn’t as often as it used to be, but it’s still there.

It waits, lingering beneath the surface, as if seeking out a moment of weakness. He could be sick, bone-tired after a guild job, freshly angry from an argument, or even just idly sitting during a rainy day, and it decides to take its chance.

Most often, it’s at night, when he can’t sleep, feeling blond hair tickling his collar bone as his gray eyes sit open, half-lidded, muted. Every mistake he may have made, every death that may have been caused from being ‘just a day’ too late, every consequence that has come from his actions.

Yuri Lowell lives as a brazen, wild man, no shame on his tongue and no hesitation in the swing of his sword, but it still clings to even a soul as free as his, leeching off of what he wants to call his carefree attitude.

But he does care.

It’s a facade he’s carried for years now. Growing up as nothing more than a street-rat from the Lower Quarter, he’d always known to act as though no one were watching - for people like him, it was a lifestyle. Perhaps it was never appearances or attitudes that made him hesitate, but the choices he made down the long, spiraling path of his life that made it so powerful when it struck.

Would a less reckless Yuri have brought less trouble for the Lower Quarter in the first place? Would conditions have bettered, had his sour mouth and antagonistic actions been dialed back? Would he have let less damage inflict innocent people if he’d taken Ragou out the first chance he’d had?

Petty, stupid little thoughts that made a level-headed Yuri scoff and brush them away nagged at his brain when he was at his lowest like this, questioning every breath he made. But then, thoughts that he forced down would surface, too. It, after all, had to make sure he suffered well and good before he could return to his usual, smirking self.

If only he’d kept a closer eye on the old man when they were still getting to know him, Estelle surely wouldn’t have been taken by Alexei. She wouldn’t have had to suffer so much. He wouldn’t have had to see the desperation in her eyes as she pleaded, “kill me.”  Even now, he knew the experience had shaken her. She, even countless months later, still had lingering discomforts around Raven, despite his severed ties to Alexei - a captor who was now dead. The intensity of his torture upon her, too, scarred her -- only Yuri could see the strained way she smiled sometimes.

A stupid, careless overlook from Yuri, and now Estelle still suffered the repercussions. 

How many people, as well, had died now from the lack of barrier blastia? It was over a year now, maybe two, and there was still no finesse in the way that people defended their towns from the monster hordes. Yuri didn’t hide the anger he felt when he’d hear how many innocent people had died in the jaws of beasts that should have been blocked from ever touching them, but he certainly had to hold back his worming little thoughts, the fingers of blame pushing into his back so tightly at night.

It’s your fault, they whispered to him, tightening his throat with misery. Had they overlooked a better solution? Were they in such a rush to exterminate the Adephagos that, in lieu of dying to it, they were willing to sacrifice thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of people in the coming years to be nothing more than fodder?

How many people have I killed? There was no dark satisfaction, cruel reasoning, justification, anything, in the way that he killed people now. Their deaths were unnecessary, nothing like the two lives he’d taken for the sake of protecting. He was a hypocrite, sure enough. And yet, he had the audacity to sleep in a bed softer than anything he’d slept on in his life, while people were struggling to keep their homes, their land, things they’d had for years before his actions had stolen it all away.

“Why are you still awake?” Flynn’s voice, groggy and low, snaps him out of his haze. He doesn’t move much, lets Flynn instead, watching as the blond lifts his head to peer down with sleep-dazed eyes.

“Don’t you have to be up early? Go back to sleep,” he replies, shifting. “You’re like an oven. Sleep on your side of the bed, and maybe I won’t be roasting alive.”

It doesn’t deter Flynn, who is watching him with eyes that practically see through him. “Do you want to talk about it?” he asks, his voice soft.

“What are you talking about?” Playing dumb is all he knows how to do. He’d be selfish to ask for help; he deserves to feel like shit, for all he’s done.

“Yuri...” Flynn shifts, as if he’s about to give up. “Do you think keeping everything to yourself will make it better?” He sounds frustrated, but not angry.

Briefly, Yuri’s mind flits to an angry Karol, yelling at him for trying to shoulder everything alone. But this is different. He remains silent, watching Flynn as he mulls over what bullshit he can say to make him go back to sleep.

However, Flynn finally gives up, frowning softly before he rests his head on Yuri once more.

The room is silent for a while, and he waits for the familiar sound of Flynn’s even, slowed breathing before he lets out a breath.

His question is to no one in particular, hollow and defeated, alone.

“Have I done anything right?”

I can imagine a very funny idea where everyone in the team, even Repede, is SO frustrated by Yuri and Flynn who are so in love with each other (so cute with each other too) and then so oblivious. And they share ideas or plans for change that while the boys aren't here. (Repede is the one who find the solution? Because he's their dog-son). Bonus if even Ioder and LeBlanc are so done because it's so obvious.

I personally am not a fan of the genre of outside forces butting into a budding romance, but I enjoy the idea of the others being exasperated that they’re interested in each other but don’t even realize it (’ah! good friend (: completely platonic’)

(We should find a nickname for Alt!Yuri XD) Do you think that it would work between Sam and him?

Romantically? I mean - yeah, maybe. Maybe Alt!Yuri (nightfoot had encouraged me to follow their pattern and call him Troy, to match Sam - so that’s his name!) was smitten with Flynn from childhood like the other way around, so it works out that way or something.

But then, I get into the idea of ‘well, he’s had a couple years now to get to know the Real Yuri’ and it sticks with me. Sam realizes he (platonically) really does love how much of a free spirit Yuri is. He admires his brash outlook on the world and his personality, so when a Yuri who is meek and polite and unwilling to take risks comes before him, he sees him as an entirely different person. This...isn’t Yuri. Sure, it’s the one he had dreamed of when he was still mad with revenge and took over the government, but he’s realized just how wrong this one is (not that he shouldn’t exist, but that he doesn’t feel like Yuri at all). I also believe that one of Troy’s lingering traits is being dense (alongside his stubbornness) and so as a kid, he hadn’t yet sunken into feelings for Flynn - and so when he’s met Sam and Flynn, he’s overjoyed to have his best friend back, not the love of his life.

However, I played around with this with Nightfoot and we both agreed that it felt a little cheap to toss Troy in and give Sam a backup Yuri since he didn’t get the first. Plus, personally, having Troy and Sam be a couple, with the fact that their names make me think of their voice actors, is a little weird for me xD

Ultimately, I do think that they’d work just fine as a couple, but it would take away from the growth Sam has had as a character in realizing he doesn’t need Yuri romantically. He has him as a friend, and that’s plenty for him.

I’m definitely not averse to Troy being absolutely flustered by Judith however with her beauty and immodest fashion sense, lmaooo
