Astarion attempts gossiping with Lae’zel
From Inkymouse’s & my fic Teeth in Your Heart - snippet under the cut ~
“I do not care for this tiefling.” She wasn’t looking at Astarion. She was glaring at Alfira across camp. “The red one I admire. If she survived a decade in the Hells, she must be a formidable warrior. This bard, on the other hand…”
Astarion couldn’t believe his luck. Lae’zel wanted to gossip with him? Maybe he’d finally risen high enough in her esteem for her to share her harsh judgements with him, instead of just directing them at him.“Gods! What is she going to if we get attacked by gnolls again – sing at them?”
“I have no doubt she would try.” Lae’zel’s expression managed to sour further.
“And her singing isn’t even that good, to add insult to injury,” Astarion said. “It’s obnoxious.”
“Yes,” Lae’zel said. She was still looking straight ahead. “It is a trait you share. But annoying as you are, Astarion, your viciousness and utility in combat make you worthwhile to keep around.”
With that, Lae’zel turned, and walked away. She hadn’t met his eyes once during the whole conversation, but that was alright with Astarion. At least he knew where he stood with her.

maybe it’s unique to american storytelling and media, or maybe it’s a facet of greater western cultural storytelling, but I see how certain film watchers hate the concept of themes being in movies because they think that they’re didactic and imposing a moral code on them, and I think of certain fans that are appalled by the idea of a villain (or anyone with a tragic backstory) not getting “redeemed” or having a HEA, and then accuse the writers of telling them that they themselves can’t every be redeemed or have a HEA, and it’s like a large swathe of the population has missed the point of storytelling in general. both groups think that stories exist specifically for them in a way that they’re meant to internalize, and any messages (perceived or real) must be the imposition of another’s will on their own freedom of choice and thought. it’s this weird level of entitlement to the source material that ultimately ruins both groups’ ability to even enjoy the story because they still manage to focus wholly on themselves.
