CHAPTER TWO: THE IDEA

Isaac watches quietly as Melissa and Scott catch up, gathering that it’s been a while since they’ve both been available to spend time together. As he observes the two mortals, his chest begins to ache. It’s not the same twinge he had been feeling for the last few days — no, it’s something different, and as he brings a hand to his chest, hoping to ease his discomfort, he realizes he is feeling envy.

Envy is new. Envy comes with resentment, with a deep longing that is impossible to ignore, and Isaac feels it surging inside him as he watches Melissa and Scott. Isaac has never had anyone love him the way Melissa loves Scott — someone to look after him, to take care of him, to make him feel safe.

Isaac feels a strange prickling at his eyes and blinks furiously, peering out the window in order to keep suspicion off of him and his watery eyes. Is he… crying? He didn’t know that was even possible for someone like him.

As far as he knows, he supposes, Collectors — and all Workers, really — don’t have emotions, or strong ones, at least.

(Well, that’s not entirely true, the Renegade obviously had some strong emotions or she wouldn’t have defected.)

This is incredibly foreign and extremely unsettling. He should not be feeling this way. This is unnatural.

And yet, it somehow feels very natural, like he should have been having these sorts of feelings all along.

He feels contradictory in this moment, leaving him utterly confused. He shoves all of these newfound feelings deep down inside him, deciding to deal with them later.

The ride to Davy’s house started out fairly quiet, save for the low background hum of the radio and the occasional ear-piercing “WOO!” Gene let out as he raised his shirt up and flashed the citizens of Seymour’s Bay from the bed of Zeke’s truck.

If this had been literally any other time, Zeke would be hooting with laughter and slapping his knee, but he was too worried about Tina and what that no-good Jimmy Junior could have possibly said to her.

“Hey, T-Town,” Zeke murmured after a few more minutes of silence between them, reaching over to turn his radio down, “Everythin’ okay?”

“Hmm?” Tina looked up from her hands that were clasped in her lap. “Oh, yeah, everything’s… fine.”

Zeke didn’t buy it. He thought about just leaving it alone, but there was a part of him that just couldn’t let it go, especially if Jimmy Junior would be at Davy’s party.

“J-Ju’s not givin’ ya any trouble, is he?” Zeke asked, glancing over at Tina.

Tina shook her head slowly, then paused. “I mean… sort of, I guess.”

Zeke’s grip on his steering wheel tightened. What had Jimmy Junior done now?

“He…” Tina wondered if she should tell him. If they had really been on a date, would Zeke be sad that Jimmy Junior wanted her back? She didn’t want Zeke to be sad, but she didn’t want to keep something like this from him either.

Zeke waited patiently for her response.

“He apologized to me, and… he wants to get back together.”
