i really appreciate jack’s openness to talking about mental health
i remember jack’s insane work ethic being one of the first things i admired when i first found him back in 2015. his consistency with keeping up with videos without delay, keeping up with social media, and keeping up with interacting with us (which even back then was friggin millions), all while still being happy and positive and energetic, those were all goals/inspiration for me. and while i didnt feel like i had any of that at all at the time, in retrospect i did work hard since like grade school, constantly getting straight A’s up til 8th grade, graduating with honors around the top of my high school class, scholarships, going into friggin engineering for college.
but then around 2016/17 i got completely burnt out, aha. i barely made a friend who i didnt even share a major with, i was alone. this was the dream major that i was supposed to enjoy, that everyone thought i would be great at….and everyone else in my class flew by me as i felt like i could barely keep up.
fall 2017 was the worst semester; i just barely could do anything anymore and it showed haha. but literally as i walked out of my last class of the sememster, i just barely caught jack’s livestream on that day and right exactly when he started talking about his own mental health. and like the stuff he mentioned in today’s video, he said how it was ok to go seek therapy, to get help if you’re not feeling ok. and that even he was thinking about going to therapy and doing other things to help himself with his mentality.
that day, and the 2017 vlog he did afterward, really meant a lot to me. especially since i knew things were doing great for me mentally since like december 2016, but me and the people around me kept thinking “oh this time it’ll be better, it’s not that bad yet.” like no it was that bad lol. and heck, it even took a few more weeks of talking and crying, and more talking/convincing, and my sister pushing me to research a therapist and my mom pushing me to call to make an appointment, that i finally did go, and still continuing to go ^-^.
of course, change takes time and work, bad habits/thought die hard, the next semester wasnt peachy either, and still my family’s a smidgen 3% not totally understanding why i go. but having someone to talk with every week, and like kati mentioned in the video someone who could objectively hear me out and help in the best way they could, honestly helped me get through the last couple of months. and i think now that i have someone to help keep my brain in check,as well as a summer to take a break in, and a new major to look forward to, for the first time in a while i have a bit of that old spark i used to have to do good this year.
tbh it probably would’ve save me a lot of heartache and irl problems if i hadn’t waited til things were broken. like jack and kati said in the video, if you feel that something is slightly off with your head, if you feel like you’re burning out, that it’s ok to seek help and it’s ok to step back from things for a bit.
i always looked up to jack cos i wanted to be as happy and energetic about life as he is. but now, i even more so look up to and appreciate him cos he keeps making a conscious effort with stuff like these videos to bring awareness to taking care of yourself, being so genuine and open in his own ups and downs this past year and using it to help others in bettering their mental wellness.
this turned into a long post apologies lol, but
tl;dr i really appreciate what jack does and keeps doing in regards to mental health and i just wanted to thank him for being so open to us with his own experiences and i just really appreciate and love him k thanks :’) <3
