Here’s the thing about the manslaughter au: none of them expect to get away with it.

Rufus shows up and snaps at every cop who’s still trying to talk to one of his kids like they aren’t having a breakdown because they just watched a kid die and Jenny thinks, hysterically, that she’s really glad they haven’t contradicted themselves yet.

There’s a whisper of good riddance. Serena can’t bring herself to feel anything but sick whenever she hears it, even though she knows exactly where it comes from. She’s not sure if she’s proud of that or not. Blair doesn’t understand why she hesitates, and she knows it seems suspicious.

They have to go back to school. Dan sees Nate Archibald hovering near the bus stop when he gets off, the way he always does, whether or not he’s planning to smoke before class, but Chuck isn’t there with him. The empty space leaves the picture unbalanced. Nate looks at him instead of through him for what might be the first time. Dan looks away.

Nate mumbles something unintelligible. Dan nods.

They walk together to campus.
