“Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.”
Thank you, Dr. King.

Drawing Big Personalities with @joeyellis
For more imaginative character studies from Joey, follow @joeyellis on Instagram.
For Joey Ellis (@joeyellis), drawing is a study of relationships. “You can’t treat your younger sister the way you treat your grandma. They are at totally different stages of life. Drawing characters is similar,” says the Charlotte, North Carolina-based illustrator. Joey’s work is filled with bold, off-the-wall personality — from dragons in business suits to robot musicians.
“I love creating things that look one way, then different when you see them in a whole different world,” he says. “Things that are out of context, being used by someone else out in the wild. To me, that’s very gratifying.”
While experimenting with mismatched environments is important to his character work, the thing that weaves all of Joey’s projects together is something more simple: fun.
“I think everyone has the same problems. Everybody carries around heavy, sad things throughout their life — everybody — and it’s possible to handle it in a positive and silly way,” he says. “Life is short.”

Sharing Teen Literary Love with @blueeyedbiblio
For more young adult book recommendations, follow @blueeyedbiblio on Instagram.
You can thank Harry Potter for Emily Ables’ (@blueeyedbiblio) infectious love of literature. When the 18-year-old Ohioan first encountered the boy wizard, it was — appropriately — a magical moment.
“It showed me how much stories can do,” Emily says of the J.K. Rowling series. “Stories can allow you to live somewhere else for a day. They can show you what it’s like to have supernatural powers. They can show you that you’re not alone. Once I learned how many lives I can live through stories, all I wanted was to read, read, read.”
Emily started her book-centric Instagram last year, and her followers consider her an expert in young adult novel recommendations.
“I’ve had people tell me they bought Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas because I raved about it so often,” she says. “Those instances always make me incredibly happy. I love when people read a book because they know I loved it. Sharing the love of reading is a great feeling.”

#HowIShoot: Food Photography with @symmetrybreakfast
To see more of Mark and Michael’s symmetrical daily breakfasts, follow @symmetrybreakfast on Instagram.
For one East London couple, eating breakfast together has become more than a daily routine. Michael Zee, who works at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (@vamuseum), spends hours looking for recipe ideas online and preparing a symmetrical breakfast every day for his boyfriend Mark van Beek, design director of Gloverall (@gloverall). Each creation is carefully crafted to be almost identical and photographed for their Instagram (@symmetrybreakfast).
The ritual began, explains Michael, one weekend soon after moving in together. The couple had recently bought an old school table to use as a dining table, where most of the food is now photographed. “I made Mark breakfast, stuck it all on a tray to carry it, and noticed it was symmetrical. And that’s how it started.”
Through his photos, Michael aims to showcase how people eat breakfast all over the world. “I have learned that anything can be breakfast,” he says. “Not everyone eats toast or cereal, and I really want to reflect that.”

170 Years Before the Oculus Rift, We Had This
This is a perspective theater (also known as peepshow or diorama) composed of seven hand-colored prints connected by an accordion-like structure. When expanded, the overlapping prints create a sense of depth and produce a window into a miniature, three-dimensional realm.

Color Hunting with @indochine
To see more of Marcela’s color hunting, follow @_indochine_ on Instagram.
São Paulo wine importer Marcela Furlan (@_indochine_) calls herself a color hunter. “I pay extreme attention to details and accept all environments as possible opportunities for pursuing and capturing color, even the most adverse and achromatic surroundings,” she says.
During her childhood, Marcela accompanied her parents on their many travels and was exposed to new cultures in places as diverse as Greece and Norway. She says, “because of this, I developed a nomadic personality. I have absorbed foreign ways of looking at everyday situations.” Now Marcela has her own adventures. “Every year I visit at least one new country, and have discovered a true passion for Southeast Asia.”
Through her photography, Marcela strives to capture the universal, regardless of culture or language differences. “The truth in a scene is the element that most inspires me to shoot.”

Weekend Hashtag Project: #WHPgeometry
Weekend Hashtag Project is a series featuring designated themes and hashtags chosen by Instagram’s Community Team. For a chance to be featured on the Instagram blog, follow @instagram and look for a post announcing the weekend’s project every Friday.
The goal this weekend is to take creative photos that feature geometric shapes and strong lines. Some tips to get you started:
Try thinking of a single shape and looking for it as you go about your day. Once you train your eyes, you’ll start to see shapes all around you.
As you shoot, keep the rule of thirds principle in mind when thinking about composing your image. Turn on your phone camera’s grid overlay and place your subjects along the lines or at their intersections.
If the shapes that make up a scene aren’t immediately apparent, try a different point of view. Getting up close, moving further away or even shooting from above or below will help you get a different angle.
PROJECT RULES: Please add the #WHPgeometry hashtag only to photos taken over this weekend and only submit your own photographs to the project. Any tagged image taken over the weekend is eligible to be featured Monday morning.
