“y’got a better chance if i do,” harriet whispered, “if i get caught, i could always toss ya y’prize an’ y’can make a run fer it.” which, to be fair, is very pirate-like, but it’s bad form and that’s not how harriet’s been brought up. 

a nod and then harriet was gone, rushed up the stairs as if it was the last thing she’d ever do. once she was upstairs and made sure no one was there, she whistled the beginning of a sea shanty that her mom used to sing to her; the very one she taught ginny as a sign of their frenemy-ship. “get up here, gin!” was said in a hushed whisper. “we ain’t got much time left!”

                ginny’s first thought as she waited in the almost-darkness for harriet’s signal, crouched at the ready behind the mirrored pillar, hands to the floor to give herself a boost whenever it was time to spring upwards, was that evading mirrors would be tricky in this place.  no matter how quietly and swiftly she moved, if anyone happened to see her in a mirror—or the reflection of a mirror within another mirror—it was GAME OVER.  she’d have to keep her mind on that, especially not knowing if there were mirrors upstairs and how many if there were.

                at harriet’s whistle, ginny wasted no time crossing the space between the pillar and the staircase as sneakily as she could, passing a portrait of the patriarch of tremaine cats.  that was her second thought.  lucifer’s kittens.  literally.  ginny had almost forgotten about him.  hopefully he ( and the rest of the household cats ) be curled up somewhere asleep and not patrolling the corridors.

                “ i think it’s this way, "  she hisses, once she’s joined harriet upstairs, nodding her head to the right.  her guess was a TOTAL shot in the dark.  she had no idea which way to go.  any door could belong to her target.  “ let’s go, it’s clear. ”
