How do you feel about Uriken? I personally love their relationship/dynamic. It's very similar to Eruri after all.

Hey Anon, sorry I’ve been sitting on your ask for so long.  I have a lot of feels about Uriken, many of them a bit confused.  I confess I didn’t have much time for Kenny the first time I read the Uprising Arc. (He tried to kill Levi! The bastard!)  And I was also a bit bemused by their relationship.  I couldn’t quite get my head round why Uri was so gracious and accepting of this crazy criminal who’d tried to kill him.  Second time around I really started appreciating Kenny’s character, but it was really when the late great @ningen-suki started publishing her translations of the guide book that I fell for Uriken hook, line and sinker.  (You can read the relevant sections on her blog here: Uriken.)  To be honest, there are still aspects of Uri’s character that I don’t think I really understand, so I’d like the read the Uprising Arc again. Every time I read that arc I get something new from it. 

Of course one of the reasons I’m so fascinated in Uriken is that it sheds light on Levi and Erwin’s relationship.  So much of what we know about the Ackerbond comes from Kenny and Uri, and of course one of the things that is so striking about their bond is that many years after Uri has died, Kenny is still pursuing his dream.  We’ve seen very little of Levi since he lost Erwin, the man he devoted his life to following, it’s going to be interesting to see if he also remains true to his leige’s dream long after his death. I think he will, and I know a few fans, me included, are hoping that we’ll have a chance to see Levi let rip and go all out Kenny on Zeke’s ass.  

So yeah anon, I have lots of feels about Uriken.  Thank you for your ask and apologies once again for taking so long to answer.

SnK Sound Director Mima Masafumi Shares Script Cover of Season 3 Episode 10 (Episode 47)

Mima Masafumi, the long-time sound director of the SnK anime, shared the cover of episode 10′s (”Friends”) script! The cover image is a sketch version of Kenny and Uri.

Producer Tateishi Kensuke shared the script covers for episode 39 & episode 38 in previous weeks, and Mima Masafumi shared episodes 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, & 46.

Update I finally watched it and it killed me omgggg  I cried REAL TEARS when Kenny died...it was not as bad as in the manga (it took me DAYS to recover from chapt 69, thanks Isayama) but still. Kenny’s backstory and his relationship with Uri are just too much for me to handle without bursting into tears

Preview Image and More on Episode 47 (Season 3 Episode 10) Revealed

The official SnK anime website has released a preview image for the 10th episode of season 3, also episode 47 in the series, featuring Kenny!

The episode title will be “ 友人 ” (Tomodachi), or “Friends,” which corresponds with chapter 69 in the manga. Key staff members for this episode include Seko Hiroshi for screenplay, Miyaji Masayuki for storyboards, Itoga Shintaro + Sakuraba Aiko as episode directors, and Tomita Megumi, Chiba Takaaki, Tamura Yasuho, Hasegawa Hitomi, Tanaka Masaaki + Miyamura Akira as animation directors.

On NHK’s website, the list of episode titles revealed so far are:

Legendary Seiyuu Furukawa Toshio Voices Uri Reiss

Furukawa Toshio, an icon in the seiyuu industry for his role of Piccolo in Dragon Ball Z, shared on Twitter his excitement for voicing the role of Uri Reiss, who spoke for the first time in today’s new SnK episode. He also paid kudos to the sound director (Likely referring to Mima Masafumi).

Hi! What do you think would have happened if Erwin had survived? I'm not really talking about strategies, wars etc. but I'm talking about the "Man" Erwin, not the Commander. How would he feel about all the events that happened after his death? He felt very guilty when he was alive, so I wonder how his soul could have coped with this cruel truth he fought so much to find out.

It is difficult to say, but I think it comes down towhat Levi asked him here:

Here Levi is talking about tactics, but his question is important also for Erwin’s existencial situation: “What will you do once you realize your dream?”.

I think Erwin’s answer would have determined his future. Wecan’t know this answer and if Erwin were a real person he could have come upwith a positive and constructive answer as well as with a negative anddestructive one. We can’t know because people are complex and have in themselves more strength and more weakness than what we can imagine.

Do you know where the source is of Yams saying that Kenny was romantically interested in I? I've heard lots of people say that and I'm wondering if it is true or not

I’m going to assume you meant Uri, Anon. 

As with many relationships in SnK, Kenny and Uri’s is not explicitly stated as romantic to my knowledge. I also don’t know of any interviews where Yams says it is (if there are, I want to know badly!). Nevertheless, they clearly have a bond that is important to them both, so I’ve tried to gather the information I think might be most compelling for anyone who is interested. Please note: I wouldn’t say I ship these two, but their bond is tragic and ambiguous, so I might as well because they’re up my alley.

We all know that Kenny Ackerman is a difficult person. He lives for himself. He’s ruthless and violent. He’s earned the name Kenny the Ripper with good reason.  He has no qualms about fighting and trying to kill his own nephew, Levi, after all.

And yet, when he meets Uri, Kenny hesitates.

Uri prostrates himself before Kenny, and something changes (the jolt). I’d say this is the moment Kenny finds his liege as an Ackerman: Uri.

Later, when he’s asked about it, Kenny says he offered his help to Uri because Uri was the strongest guy around. It’s true that Kenny does respect strength (and little else), but he doesn’t seem very certain of this answer when he gives it. When Uri is reminiscing about their meeting he speaks of it very differently, he’s much more certain and sincere in his words.

Here Uri is expressing his trust and belief in Kenny. It’s pretty touching, especially given the circumstances of their meeting. Kenny, however, adds to himself that he was never able to feel the same way Uri did. He wasn’t able to say things with such certainty. Perhaps Kenny never knew exactly what he felt about Uri. Perhaps Kenny didn’t believe he had the capacity to feel anything. Perhaps Kenny badly wanted to feel the way Uri did, to trust him and believe in him to such a deep level, but was never quite able to. Perhaps not, this is all speculation.

To put the length of their relationship (whatever it is) in perspective we can examine the dates a little. Kenny and Uri met in 829. Uri died in 842. That means that Kenny spent nearly 13 years as Uri’s right-hand man. Kenny died in 850. He didn’t return to a life of crime, but stayed with the Interior Police that entire time- 8 additional years spent loyal to the memory of Uri. That’s certainly a lot of loyalty either way. 

We also learn that Kenny wanted to obtain the power of the Founding Titan from Eren (he becomes upset when Rod mentions that only someone of royal blood can fully utilize it). Kenny later states, while dying, that everyone is drunk on something, himself included, and implies that he was drunk on power. This is how he explains away his motivation to possess the Founding Titan. But I think there’s a little more…

Let’s recall something else Kenny said.

When Freida consumed Uri, Kenny says he saw him in her. She spoke of the same ideals: love and peace among all mankind. He then wonders if she can think that way because she has such great power. This is the moment he realizes he wants this for himself, the moment his dream of taking the Founding Titan begins. But, does he want the Founding Titan’s power? Or, perhaps, does he want some part of Uri? Does he want the capacity to feel the things Uri did? 

Did Kenny stay loyal to Uri for 8 years after his death, watching Freida and seeing his liege in her? Or did he just stick around to be in a good position to take the power of the Founding Titan?

What exactly is Kenny after?

I’ll leave that to you to decide, Anon, it’s open to interpretation.

Let’s go back one last time to Kenny’s dying words. No matter what direction he goes in, his conversation keeps circling back to one man: Uri. In the end, we get this scene:

Kenny and Uri, side by side, framed in such a quiet and calm way by the water. It’s idyllic. 

Is this romantic? I think you can decide whatever you like. That’s the beauty of SnK- so much is left unsaid and open to the reader’s interpretation. I’ve tried to be as objective with this information as I can, and I hope you don’t find my recap too biased. I also hope this information helps you decide for yourself, whatever conclusion you come to!
