TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERAS TOUR 17th March 2023 – 8th December 2024 🏆 149 Shows, Highest Grossing Tour of All Time It was the end of an era, but the start of an age. The only thing that's left is the manuscript, one last souvenir from my trip to your shores. Now and then I reread the manuscript, but the story isn't mine anymore 💚💛💜♥️🩵🖤🩷🩶🤎💙🤍 insp.
We do it because people need an escape from how brutal life can be, and it is the honour of a lifetime to be that for them, if only for a night. And although we are all on our own in this big scary life, somehow it doesn’t feel that way when we’re singing the same words as 80,000 other people wearing glittery face paint. We do it because life comes in waves, in phases, in brilliant flurries of magical moments, and all of these things come together to create….Eras. The most wondrous tour of my life, my beloved Eras Tour.

Taylor talking to the crowd tonight:
''This tour has been the adventure of a lifetime. I speak on behalf of my band, my crew, my fellow performers, who all left their families and have spent time away from everything that they know and love and have performed when they were sick, when anything was going on on their lives, they made sure that this show happened for you. I just wanted to say this that on behalf of all of us, we will never forget you giving us that moment, thank you so much Vancouver.''

"the bolter" is one of my favourite songs from ttpd. it tells a simple story of a girl whose first instinct when something goes wrong is to run away.
we meet the hero of the story when she's just a child who almost drowned. this kind of stuff is definitely a formative experience and we learn later on that it stayed with her long into adulthood ("it feels like the time she fell through the ice then came out alive"). we get to know her - she's selfish, charming and really afraid of being known.
we learn the whole story of her relationship in the chorus - how it started (with a kiss) and how it ended - with the slam of a door and with one of them leaving in a car (was it the getaway car?). he calls her a whore just because she hurt him, but she feels so free when she's finally alone. she can finally breathe. not only that, it's like she's alive again after drowning in a cold water (the latter being the relationship). the comparison to drowning makes the breathing even more full of life and crucial, but also rapid.
the second verse describes the relationship in more detail - he was a cad, a bear she wanted to tame just because he wanted her or (more likely) wanted to get her. she tells herself that it's fate but when she sees the littlest leaks, the littlest stuff that is wrong - she decides to run away. later in the song (in the bridge) we learn that it's not the first time. she's been with many men and it always looks like this - she's having fun until she's not anymore and she immediatelly runs away in her chariot (which is always waiting nearby just like she is always ready to leave). she wants to be the heartbreaker, not the one with a broken heart and she can get it only by escaping first. "you gotta leave before you get left" indeed.
at the end we learn that her tendency to run away maybe makes her single over and over again, but she's got so many stories and she feels free. it definitely feels like the opposite of the prophecy where she begs for someone to love her. in the bolter she accepts this part of herself. it tells a story of a person who would rather be alone than in a wrong relationship because "sometimes, to run is the brave thing".
the interesting thing is that "and I can confirm she made a curious child" is the only use of a first-person narration. the narrator wants to emphasize that it's not her story. it's a girl she (the narrator) knows. it makes me thing of "when emma falls in love" and the lines "she won't walk away unless she knows she absolutely has to leave" and "and to tell you the truth, sometimes I wish I was her" in particular.
the melody of the song definitely makes me think of freedom and dancing. it really sounds like she accepted this part of herself. she might be thinking about her near-death experience from childhood but she's thinking even more about how she's alive right now and that's all that matters. she has the best stories after all.

Taylor talking to the crowd during the Red era for the last time tonight at The Eras Tour:
''I never thought that writing one line about friendship bracelets would have you guys all making so many amazing bracelets and making friends and bringing joy to eachother. You have created a space of joy and love and I couldn't be more proud of you, honestly.''
