Why I like Ererei:
Idk man, maybe because I'm a sick and twisted son of a bitch that loves heavy angst who's also an author that loves the idea of a man, a supposed spy, an Intel gatherer, a traitor falling in love with an enemy.
Also...the dynamics and parallels I mean. The parallel of Reiner's mother wanting something that she can never have (his father) and Reiner wanting something he can never have (Eren) is something amazing and tragic to me.
I can only imagine Reiner painstakingly falling in love with Eren and having to snap himself out because of the mission, because of his mother, and because he was not them. But he fell in love anyway. I cannot imagine, the sorrow of knowing you'll leave him soon but you knew each other too late and in the wrong sides. The sorrow of knowing you caused half of your loved ones tormenting past must be unbearable for Reiner and even more unbearable when Eren tried to convince that yes, he was just tired, that perhaps for once, Commander Erwin's hunch was wrong. Tried to snap him out of it. The tragedy of their situation was more prominent more than ever after the screaming match they had above the branches of big trees when you threw titans at each other.
And honestly poor Eren. Who's heart was played by nearly more than three years. Eren, whom, looked up to this person that he could relate to the most and understands his weak and vulnerable side the most. Eren ,whom, tried to convince the love of his life that he was indeed tired, that it was just from the nerves. That he should come back home to him. Eren, whom, kept glancing at Reiner's wounded arm but still tried to reason, to snap him out of it. But then he was a soldier and Reiner was a warrior and they were enemies and enemies are supposed to kill each other, enemies aren't supposed to be having the confusing feelings of killing each other when their people is on the line, when their people relies on them, when Eren had the power to the founding and use it and Reiner had the knowledge to the layout of the city and knows how to kill the people inside it. They weren't supposed to feel their love anymore because were their time spent together even real anymore?
Both were once children that were given no choices whatsoever. Both were made to chase after the impossible.
Reiner understood Eren a lot and probably saw himself in him. The only skillful thing about Eren was his determination and will, he was not half bad at everything, while he was also not half good at everything, but he was not the weakest out of everyone. Reiner was probably someone who can understand Eren a lot, Reiner was probably the constant reassurance of Eren that yes, this person you look up to was once like you.
Then for awhile, Eren understood why Reiner had to what he had to do back then as well. We understood this when we get the parallel of them just by the gesture of them holding hands and their conversation in the basement.
