Lets talk about abortion
So I see a lot of people unsure as to why the Heartbeat bill is problematic. So let’s break it down shall we?
The heart beat bill that is established essentially bans all abortions. Why you may ask? It is banning abortion after 6 weeks. Many women only begin to notice that they’ve missed their period by the 6 week mark let alone realize that they are pregnant. Some ultrasounds, like an abdominal ultrasound can’t even pick up a heartbeat until 12 weeks.
So why is this a problem?
1. Anti-Pro Choice
Most obviously, this is Anti-Pro Choice. In case you're unaware, Pro-choice is the social movement that demands that the only person deciding if they should have an abortion or not is the person carrying the baby. Contrary to popular belief, it is not Pro-Abortion, pro-choice is simply agreeing that the only person entitled to the decision of having a baby or getting an abortion is the person who is pregnant. This heartbeat bill renders this choice useless by criminalizing abortion. It fails to realize that not everybody that is pregnant consensually have sex. It fails to recognize that 1 in 6 women are raped. It fails to recognize that women and girls are molested and sexually assaulted that could result in an unwanted pregnancy. And let’s be honest, some people just don’t want kids, some now and some never. That should be their decision to make, because women are not just BABY MAKING MACHINES. Let’s not even get started on how the penalty for getting an abortion will be more severe than it will to rape someone. Just let that sink in.
2. Policing Women’s bodies
But for real you guys, this is not about being anti-abortion. If this bill was about ending abortions, then we would be handing out birth control like candy on Halloween. We would be taking measures to revolutionize our SexEd curriculums in schools. At the end of the day, this bill is intending to police women’s bodies and once again systemically entrap them. A bunch of crusty old white guys are deciding what you can and cannot do with your uterus. Half of those dudes can’t even find a clitoris and the other half probably have not gotten laid ever since their wedding night and therefore have this awful vendetta against women. Men are completely removed from this dialogue for abortion and pregnancy when they are the obvious offenders of pregnancies wanted or unwanted. If a woman were to have unprotected sex with 100 men in a year, she would only be able to have one full-term pregnancy in a year. However, if a man were to have unprotected sex with 100 women then it is possible to have 100 pregnancies that year.
If this was really about banning abortion then we would be including men in this dialogue and honestly only introducing policies restricting the reproductive rights of men. We would require men to get a vasectomy once they decide to become sexually active to ensure no unwanted pregnancies are conceived. We would focus on male birth control . But like I said, this is heartbeat bill is a thinly veiled attempt at once again oppressing women.
3. Class Politics
Regardless of how criminalized abortion is, we all know that the mistresses, wives and daughters of these conservative politicians will be able to obtain an abortion when they need one. The abortion ban is a method to create an even more overwhelming disparity of wealth and create tension between the classes.
The socioeconomic implications of this bill are not shocking in anyway. In fact, I would argue that it’s just another policy in place to repress marginalized groups. In the USA, it costs approximately $175,000 for a low income two-parent household to raise a child in 2018 from birth to 17. If a family cannot afford to have another child, by criminalizing abortion we’re essentially giving them a $175,000 “debt sentence”. Families that are already spreading themselves thin will be struggling even more to make ends meet. They will try to take out loans, often predatory, that will only throw them into this downward cycle of debt and credit dependence, working insane hours to barely make ends meet. People that will be victimized the most are people of color. A disproportionate amount of people of color classify as low-income, living well under the poverty line. This is due to various policies implemented over the years to aide the success of white families and make it harder for families of color to succeed. Redlining, Jim Crowe, mass incarceration, credit checks even dating to post-abolition pay outs to slave owners. Everything about our current society have been built on the backs of the poor, marginalized and usually colored people.
Banning abortion will only make the poor poorer.
Alternative Reality:
Disclaimer: this is simply an extreme example I am using to illustrate how extreme this ban on abortion is. Again, I am not saying that being pro-choice is being “Pro-abortion”, hence why I called it a “Pro-abortion” world and not a “Pro-choice” world. Don't come at me.
So if it still hasn’t really sunk into why this is a bad idea. Let’s look at this scenario, if the tables were flipped and we lived in a “Pro-Abortion” world.
How would people feel if you were forced to get an abortion? If you were not:
- 28 years old
-able to provide documentation of financial stability
-able to have a minimum of $30,000 saved before starting a family
-able to successfully pass a psych eval and anger management assessment
-able to list two responsible parties as the primary caregivers for said-child
-able medical documentation showing good health
-able to provide a home that suffices as a safe and child-ready environment
-able to pass an assessment to see if there is any substance abuse (alcohol, hard drugs, etc)
-able to prove that you have no more than three dependents maximum in the household
Then it would be mandated that you get an abortion. Regardless of any circumstantial excuses. If we forced abortion on people that were not financially, physically, mentally and psychologically capable for having a child, it seems a bit dystopian right? Well, that is what’s happening right now. Pregnancies are being forced upon women and it’s time we educate ourselves and advocate for what's right.
