BNHA OC: Scrivener
Wordsmith is a vague BNHA OC I came up with a few days ago. He’s... The initial idea was that he was an established pro, but then I thought about that trope of the everyday man dreaming to be a hero.
So Scrivener was born.
Civilian Name: Stanton Sutcliffe
Personality - absentminded, timid, frugal
Likes - passionfruit
Dislikes - bitter foods
Birthday - January 3
Alias: Scrivener
Quirk: Wordsmith
His skin features tiny letters from the English language that roll across every inch of his skin and appear to be tattooed. If he concentrates, he can control the flow of words to certain parts of his body.
Every word that he spells on his skin affects him in a way. Simple words such as “heal” and “shield” respectively heals the wound it rolls across and produces energy shields around the body part where the word is. His quirk requires only the most basic words to create an effect.
To affect his entire body, he would need to spell the same word over and over until every inch of his skin is covered. His quirk seems to affect him only physically; words of emotion and personality traits (”happy” and “sad”, “clever” and “forceful”) don’t have an effect on him.
The letters on his skin are inexhaustible in numbers, but to perform an Effect requires vitality. The larger the Effect, the more vitality is used.
His quirk depends on his reflexes; the faster his reflexes, the faster he can spell a word and create an effect in an offensive/defensive situation.
Quick Facts!
He is a British expatriate living in Kyoto with Bellamy, his Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
He works as a museum curator for a Hero Museum that features exhibits about pre-Quirk society and its conceptions of heroes.
His character is inspired by Masami Kondo (After the Rain); as in, he’s middle-aged, timid and dutiful, and has an unfulfilled dream.
His dream was to become a pro hero (he would use the hero name Scrivener) but he realised he didn’t have the right personality nor any real motives to become one.
A history geek about pre-Quirk society, he has made it his life’s mission to compile a comprehensive and detailed timeline of the advent of quirks and the first pro-heroes all over the world.

BNHA OCs: Kyouki & Myousumi
Part 2/?
Separate Ways
Myousumi applied to Ketsubutsu High’s Hero Course, while Kyouki sent an application to an academy in Tokyo specializing in news communications and journalism. Both got into their respective schools and their families threw a small party before they parted ways. Despite the distance, the two managed to keep in touch all the way through their high school career.
They video call and chat through the telecommunications app Telegraph. When something momentous happened, their calls would last until the wee hours in the morning and the two of them would regret all their life choices.
Myousumi would travel several hours up to Tokyo to visit Kyouki for the summer. One year he stayed over for the entire break and ended up meeting the Jet-Black Hero: Tsukuyomi. (Kyouki has Myousumi’s fanboying on tape.)
In the beginning of their third year, Deku and the Hell Class defeated the League of Villains in an operation that left half of Tokyo decimated. Kyouki went to stay with Myousumi in Shizuoka while her mother stayed in Japan to help the injured heroes (as a hero nurse).
There, the two of them discussed their futures. Kyouki encouraged Myousumi to continue being a hero after he scored a low rank in Ketsubutsu’s Sports Festival. Myousumi respected Kyouki’s decision to become a journalist, even though he always thought their quirk would be awesome at subduing villains.
Ketsubutsu’s graduation date was later than Kyouki’s graduation, so they and their mom travelled down to see Myousumi graduate in the Top 3 of his class. Tsukuyomi was present to see off his intern and Kyouki showed him the video of Myousumi fanboying the first time they met.
When Kyouki graduated, Myousumi and his father presented a large ink painting of their two families as their graduation gift. (Kyouki and their mother gave Myousumi an autograph book signed by the Hell Class and other pro heroes.) Myousumi was so excited and hyper that Kyouki had to activate their quirk to calm him down.

BNHA OCs: Kyouki & Myousumi
Part 1/?
Origins
They attended Kiwami Junior High together. They weren’t in the same class, but they were in the same club: Mystery Roleplay Club.
Kyouki and Myousumi’s English teacher assigned a project to read a English-written mystery classic novel and turn in a comprehensive character analysis. Kyouki chose Agatha Christie’s The A.B.C. Murders. Myousumi was eager to read Sherlock Holmes but, on recommendation from the school’s librarian, picks Last Bus to Woodstock by Colin Dexter last-minute. By the end of the assignment, the two fell in love with the mystery genre.
It wasn’t just the two of them. Their English teacher assigns the project annually, and a few upperclassmen have created a club where members act out their favourite novels.
At first, Kyouki and Myousumi were at odds with each other for their intense reverence of their chosen detective; they would constantly argue about who was the better detective, sidekick, author. Unconsciously, the two became each other’s first friends over time, but the intensity of their debates haven’t died down.
In their final year at the junior high, the Mystery Roleplay Club was tasked to perform a play for a special event. Kyouki and Myousumi (now co-presidents of the club) write a series of skits where pairs of detectives played by club members meet coincidentally then work together to solve the theft of Great Britain’s Crown Jewels in a story arc. The story arc ends with Poirot and Morse (guess who!) finding the culprit and returning the stolen crown.

The Changeling: 5+1
So... these are a few interactions between the protags of The Changeling, Ashley Anderson and Sun Hwa Kang (aka “Sunny”). I really don’t have a feel for their individual personalities yet, so I pulled from my own experiences with my friends and wrote these down. It’s also dialogue only, so expressions and vocal inflections are up for interpretation.
5 instances where Sunny helps Ashley, and 1 instance where Ashley returns the favour.
1. “Sunny! Do you know the answer to #15?”
“What the hell are you doing, it’s nearly midnight!”
“Says you. Isn’t it way past your bedtime, your parents will get ma~ad!”
“Shh! You’ll wake them up! I was working on Kraymer’s essay, for your information.”
“But that’s not due until the end of spring break! Well, what can I expect from the smartest person I know?”
“I just like to be prepared. I’ll give you the answer to #15 if you stop bothering me.”
“You’re the best, Sunny! Thank you, thank you!”
“Mmm. But you really should know this, Loch taught us this two days ago.”
“... Uh… Well…”
“You fell asleep again, didn’t you.”
“Heh… sorry.”
“You better get some sleep after I explain all this to you, Ashley Anderson.”
“Thanks again, Sunny.”
So #15 is a cubic polynomial and we need to factor…”
2. “Hey, Sunny! What do you want from here?”
“These things are rigged you know, you’ll just waste your money.”
“Well, ye~ah, but I’m getting one anyway. So, which one do you want?”
“You don’t have to spend your money on me… Ugh, fine. Um… the green one near the chute.”
“That looks easy! One green hedgehog, coming up.”
“You know you just jinxed yourself, right?”
“Stop discouraging me, I already have it! Ju~ust, right there… and, bam!”
“Impressive.”
“Sun~ny!”
“Let me try, you moved it even closer so maybe it’ll be easier.”
“You know you just jinxed yourself, right?”
“Shut up, Ash. I’m trying to concentrate.”
“Heh heh. Wait, go right a bit more.”
“No, I got it. I got it… just one more nudge… Hah hah! There you go, one green hedgehog!”
“You actually did it, that was amazing— Wait, but, I thought you wanted it. And you also won it yourself; it’s yours.”
“Green’s your favourite colour. I picked it for you.”
“Oh… uh, thanks Sunny.”
“Mhmhmm.”
3. “... Aine just stared at the old man, it was really creepy and I bet your parents would’ve scolded the hell out of her for it—”
“Sounds like your winter break in Seattle was fun.”
“Yeah, it actually was besides that part. The Space Needle was crowded, but you should’ve seen how packed it was in Pike Place Market. It’s so cool there, there was a lower level where they sold niche stuff. No food or anything like that, but there was a single store dedicated to Harry Potter para— pariphin— paraphen— ugh, stuff—”
“Harry Potter paraphernalia? That sounds really cool, if it was niche did you see any Hufflepuff merchandise?”
“I— uh, actually yeah! There was a Hogwarts Houses section; they even had merch of Lupin, little werewolf statues and fanmade posters.”
“That. Sounds. So amazing, Ash. I wish I could’ve been there, I probably would’ve bought out that entire store.”
“Heh, yeah…”
4. and 5.   “Sunny! Can you give me a lift to downtown after school?”
“Well, yeah, but what are you going to do there? Downtown’s shady.”
“It really isn’t if you know where to go and mind your business! Plus, I’m meeting someone so it’s not like I’m going to be all by myself.”
“Yeah… right. Okay, sure. My car’s parked behind the music building, we can walk after Talley’s period.”
“Sure, that sounds good. Thanks!”
“Mhmhmm… no problem, Ash.”
                                                            —oOo—
“Can you lean back a bit? The rearview mirror…”
“Ah, right! Sorry.”
“You’re fine, parallel parking is something else entirely.”
“Hah, well, maybe you can teach me all your secrets when I apply for my permit.”
“You can use my test booklet, I wrote down all the answers for the online test.”
“Sun Hwa Kang? Endorsing cheating? It’s more likely than you thi— AGH!”
“Whoops, my foot slipped. Sorry about that.”
+1 “I— I’m so sorry, Sunny. I’m sorry, I’m sorry. You were never meant to be caught in the crossfire. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.”
“...”
“I have to do this. I— I… Rhiannon gave me this. It’ll take everything away. N-no more pain, you won’t remember any of it.”
“...”
“You’re my best friend, you know that? You’ve always been there with me since we were twelve. You put up with me even though I woke you up in the middle of the night to help with homework. I never thanked you enough for everything you did for me. You’re my friend, you were my only friend, Sunny.
“I’m going to take it all away. Rhiannon’s feathers aren’t selective, so when you go back I’ll be only a dream. I hope it’s a nice dream, I really hope so.”
“… A… shh…”
“Thank you for everything, Sunny.”

To be a better writer...
People don’t act exactly the same around everyone, so characters shouldn’t either. Allow for realistic behavior modifications depending on the character’s company and allow it to affect the story.

BNHA OC: Nightmare
Here again with another OC!
Civilian Name: Kyouki Mahoro (狂気  幻: lunacy, illusion/dream)
Personality - dynamic, flexible, resourceful
Likes - British detective dramas
Dislikes - hospitals
Birthday - October 13
Vigilante Name: Nightmare
Naming themself was very difficult as their mother was Greek and they wanted to honour her and her culture. They vacillated between Morpheus, the God of Dreams, and Phobos, the personification of fear. In the end, they decided on Nightmare to avoid being identified - not many Japanese people had their Grecian colouring.
Quirk: Phobia
Able to cut down opponents by creating terror-inducing illusions only the opponents see in their mind’s eye.
Quirk operates on eye contact. Once eye contact between opponent is maintained for 30 seconds, a mental link is established and Kyouki is able to see the opponent’s fears and is able to psychically recreate them as illusions.
Limited to the amount of time needed to establish a mental link between opponent and the need to do the aforementioned. If opponent’s eyes are covered or is blind, Kyouki is unable to perform their quirk. If opponent or Kyouki breaks eye contact, the 30 second-countdown restarts. Once the mental link is established, eye contact is no longer necessary.
Quirk also has the capacity to be a liability. Once the opponent has “gone phobic”, they could potentially harm their surroundings (property, people, etc) with greater intensity due to their induced hysteria.
Can also be used to calm down victims by reversing the emotion induced by the illusion. Kyouki can establish a mental link and can create a psychic illusion that induces calm and peace, instead of terror and hysteria.
Weapon: Xiphos and Capture Rope
The xiphos is a short sword used by the Ancient Greeks. The blade is 2ft long and is made of steel alloy.
Traditionally used by Greek soldiers once their spear was discarded, Kyouki uses their xiphos when their quirk fails. It is a short-range weapon, adept at slashing, cutting, and thrusting in close quarters.
The capture rope is wrapped around Kyouki’s waist like a belt. It is composed of carbon fibers and metal alloy, like Aizawa Shouta’s scarf. It is unwrapped and thrown manually, and is used to incapacitate opponents who have gone phobic.
Stats
Power - 4/5
Speed - 3/5
Technique - 5/5
Intelligence - 4/5
Cooperativeness - 3/5
Background
They are gender-nonconforming (gnc), AFAB, and prefer they/them pronouns.
Their quirk is nothing like their parents’ at all, in a sense. Their mother, a hero nurse, possesses a quirk that projects a calm aura around her whenever activated. Their absent father, a psychiatric nurse, had a quirk that allowed him to subdue patients’ heightened emotional states.
They developed their quirk in the hospital, after their mother had been attacked by a criminal. They maintained eye contact with their father for too long and Kyouki unconsciously created a terrifying psychic illusion. Kyouki’s father left after that.
When they were younger, they wore dark-tinted sunglasses to prevent another incident like the one above. This caused trouble for them at school and they were bullied for the sunglasses, gnc-presentation, and being half-Japanese.
They stopped wearing sunglasses after meeting Myousumi Hikari at Kiwami Junior High. Just like with Myousumi, having a friend made them more approachable.
They became a vigilante because they didn’t see their quirk being accepted by the hero community - above or underground. It started small with stopping petty theft, then they began noticing a pattern in a string of arsons before publicly bringing down a gang and its boss.
Quick Facts!
They dislike going to hospitals not only because of the risk of being turned in, but because it reminds them of the incident that caused their father to leave them and their mother.
They tune in weekly to catch re-runs of old British detective dramas. Their favourite is Agatha Christie’s Poirot, even buying the original books and reading them.
Quirk Review is a niche magazine that has its fingers in many criminal pies, and Kyouki works as a junior editor.
They have olive skin and dyed dark purple hair (naturally dark blonde) that is cropped short, and pale green irises.
They are 5ft and 9.5in. Their age is 23.
They’ve run across Eraserhead and Mind Blank more than necessary during their investigations of the criminal underground.

BNHA OC: Pitch
*inhales*
Hiyeshellobnhahastakenovermyentirelifeandnowi’vebeeninspiredtocreatemyownoc’saaaaaAAAAAHHHH
*exhale*
Civilian Name: Myousumi Hikari ( 妙墨  光: lit. “dark ink light”)
Personality - Earnest, courteous, perceptive
Likes - neon lights
Dislikes - pitch black darkness
Birthday - June 28
Hero Name: Shadow Hero: Pitch
When he was younger, he used to sleep with a nightlight because he was afraid of the dark. His quirk functions with some degree of light; if it is pitch black, he is powerless.
When the time came to choose hero names, he chose Pitch to represent overcoming his fear and his weakness.
Quirk: Shadow Manipulation
Able to manipulate and control people’s shadows.
Shadows take the general shape of the person it belongs to and appears as a floating ink-black substance when shapeless. The shadow returns to its owner after use.
Quirk is limited to the amount of concentration he puts into holding the shadow’s form and tangibility, as well as the brightness of the environment. Theoretically, he can control multiple shadows at once.
His quirk is also limited by his sight. If he is blinded, his present environment is pitch black and he is unable to choose a shadow to manipulate.
Strength of the shadow is based on the amount of light shining on the person it belongs to (the more light, the darker and stronger the shadow).
Works frequently with heroes who have quirks that illuminate to some degree.
Weapon: Bo Staff
6ft staff made of steel alloy equipped with 3 settings.
Flash Bang - produces a blinding explosion to blind opponent and strengthen shadows. Explosion comes out of the staff’s “pores” and requires a 5-minute cool-down after use.
Electrocution - electrifies the length of the staff not covered in insulating material with 60k volts. The by-product of illumination strengthens to some degree shadows. Pulse continues for 30 seconds and requires a 3-minute cool-down after use.
Torch - lights up the length of the staff with a bright glow to strengthen shadows. Duration of use of setting is indefinite until setting is turned off.
Stats
Power - 3/5
Speed - 4/5
Technique - 3/5
Intelligence - 5/5
Cooperativeness - 5/5
Background
His quirk is a combination of his parents’. His father, a charcoal painter, can control ink and uses his ability to paint on the fly without a brush. His late mother, a kindergarten teacher, had a companion quirk that manifested any animal of her choosing (usually a fox) out of her shadow.
When he first developed his quirk, the other children called him a “villain” and were terrified that their shadows would be stolen permanently once he manipulated them. They avoided interacting with him and Myousumi sought comfort in books and became very good friends with the librarians at every school he attended.
As a child, he was very advanced for his age, having mastered both the kanji and hiragana writing systems. He served as his classmates’ math tutor in Ketsubutsu Academy and offered perceptive observations and analyses in science and literature.
Though he was reclusive throughout primary and secondary school, once he befriended Kyouki Mahoro he began to be more open towards other people.
His desire to become a hero was born out of overcoming his fear of the dark. Later he vowed that he would make no one, especially young children, afraid of the dark by defeating villains.
Quick Facts!
He likes neon lights because it casts pretty, colourful shadows.
Oddly, he has no shadow of his own.
Though introverted as a child, he never went through an emo phase and everyone who doesn’t know him are startled to know that he has a mostly optimistic and positive disposition.
He has pale white skin and very dark blue hair, defined cheekbones, black sclera and pale irises and white pupils.
He is 6ft and 3in. His age is 23.
He interned under the Jet-Black Hero: Tsukuyomi and is currently a sidekick to the Stun Gun Hero: Chargebolt.

World: Elphame
Elphame (or Elfhame, Elf-home) is the name of a separate realm and subtle reality from folklore belief in Lowland Scotland and Northern England. It means Fairyland and is the primary setting of The Changeling.
Environment
Elphame experiences a perpetual twilight. The sun is situated 3 degrees below the horizon and descends further to create 3 twilight phases. The terms faeries use to describe these phases are in parentheses.
Civil Twilight (Full Light): The brightest twilight phase where there is enough light that bonfires don’t need to be lit. This phase ends when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon. Full Light lasts for about 11 human hours.
Nautical Twilight (Half Light): This phase lasts between 6 degrees and 12 degrees. Bonfires and torches are being lit and the time of revelry begins. Half Light lasts for about 10 human hours.
Astronomical Twilight (Twilight): This phase occurs when the sun is 12 to 18 degrees below the horizon. The sky is no longer illuminated and celestial bodies can be observed. Twilight lasts for about 6 human hours before Full Light begins.
Standard flora and fauna are similar, if not identical, to the plants and animals in the Human World with the additional existence of magical creatures: supernatural beings that fall under the name “faerie” but don’t share the commonly accepted appearance of one.
Time Dilation
For every year (1) that passes in Elphame, 10 years pass in the Human World. Minutes and hours are circumstantial. [revealing how lazy i am at maths]
Universal Field
Elphame and the Human World are connected by the Universal Field. Distance between the two worlds depends on the amount of belief that one world has in the other. In the beginning, the world of Elphame did not exist until humans created superstitious beliefs of benevolent and malignant spirits. With such superstitions, the Universal Field connected Elphame and the Human World together, a metaphorical bridge over a chasm of nothingness. The chasm was less yawning and the bridge shorter as human’s superstitions of spirits that became known as faeries multiplied and manifested into a religious belief. The Universal Field between the worlds was shortest at the height of humans’ belief in faeries, back when they would leave offerings of peace and perform occult rituals.
The beings living in Elphame are called faeries, and I cherry-picked at the Welsh classification of faeries. The name in parentheses is what I call these types in The Changeling.
Types of Faeries
Generally speaking, there are 3 divisions of faeries in The Changeling. I used 3 of Welsh folklorist Wirt Sikes’ 5 classifications.
Ellyllon (Faeries) - they are taller than the average human with elegant, refined features with wild white hair, pale bluish/greyish skin, and golden eyes. They are able to perform classes of magic. Most Faeries are female, and crown the first male Faerie as King and exchange the rest of the male faeries as changelings. They can be mischievous, unhelpful, and scheming - but they are bound by their magic to tell the truth always.
Coblynau (Gnomes) - they live underground and work in mines. Their body type is sturdy with stubby features that are perpetually smeared with grime. They have dark-coloured hair and their magic, which is primarily Earth Elemental, is more dilute than the Faeries. They have no gender and are what folklore call “Solitary Fairies”. They are reclusive and generally not forthcoming.
Bwbachod (Brownies) - these faeries are covered in fur and are a meter (3ft and 3in) in height. They have no neck, have black sclera and brown irises, and friendly features. Faeries employ them as servants; this is not unwilling for it it the brownies’ nature to be helpful. They are the ones tasked with crossing the Universal Field to exchange changelings, gather offerings, etc. Like the Gnomes, they have no gender.

hello again
I’ve just deleted two blogs I’ve maintained on-and-off so I could concentrate on this blog.
I’ve had many story ideas, but none have fuelled me to finish them as much as The Changeling. This blog is dedicated to world building, characterization, and posting snippets of my writing progress.
It doesn’t matter how slowly you go as long as you don’t stop.
I’ll tie all these loose ends one day.
