In all his eighteen years, Ulek Tark had rarely left Karth.

His mother had died when he was very young and his father seemed to only think of his children when it suited him. Ulek had strived to earn and keep his father’s attention, but it never seemed to be enough. His father thought more of him now than he had in years past, but that was not because of anything Ulek himself had done.

Jareth had risen to the throne after his brother’s betrayal and with it meant that Ulek was now the heir. The title still felt odd to him; every time someone addressed him as “Your Highness” he expected to see one of his cousins. He was determined to make his father proud, now. Before he felt replaceable and unloved, but now he would follow in his father’s footsteps and rule after him. The thought alone made him stand a little taller.

This was his first trip to Byssya.

He had been excited to see a new planet. He’d spent most of his life on Karth, broken up by the rare trips to Arvor at his father’s side. He meant to see all of Velorum Nocate, as he would one day be one of five of its rulers.

He had had grand illusions of his time here with his father, but so far nothing had gone to plan. He did not like this place and as he trailed behind Jareth, he could not help but feel uneasy as they passed through the glass halls of the underwater palace. He knew that this had stood for hundreds of years, but he couldn’t help but think about what would happen if the glass should suddenly crack and break: leaving them to drown in the dark waters.

“Keep up!” His father growled, picking up his hurried pace.

Jareth was angry and with those words, Ulek’s fears of the Byssyian palace melted away: it was nothing in comparison with his father’s present wrath. 

Jareth had been made to look a fool at dinner. Konstantine Secura and his nephew both had a rather mischievous sense of humor and, paired with their ready wit, had been making jabs at the Karthine King all throughout the evening and it wasn’t until it was nearly over that Jareth had noticed at all. It had put him in a particularly foul mood.

Ulek moved a bit faster, but still kept his distance. He’d learned from a young age that this was best whenever his father was upset. But he hadn’t listened well enough and a moment later Jareth turned abruptly and grabbed Ulek’s arm, pushing his roughly forward, “When I give you a command, you follow it,” He yelled, “I am your father and your king and I will tolerate nothing less. Do you think because you are my son that I shall show you leniency? Do you think that I need you?” He laughed, then, “No, I don’t need you. I will just as quickly put your sister on the throne. When I speak, she listens.” He said, eyeing Ulek closely as he compared him to his sister, “She is only a woman, but perhaps she is still your superior. And you … you just can’t seem to keep up, can you?”

okay so idk if you have any ideas about what kind of sibling relationship these two have???? 

i feel like it might be complicated on ulek’s end??? like on one hand she is his sister and he loves her but I think kate mentioned once that jareth likes to pitt his kids against each other and the thing ulek wants most in life is to gain his father’s approval and so I think he kinda also sees kahrin as a rival for jareth’s affections/attentions??? 

either way, I do think that he does care about her in his own weird way and he’s all like “dad and i can hurt her but no one else can”????? ?

also like this family i just .... 

omggg okay so like ulek basically lives for that moment when jareth is like “good job, son, i am pleased w/ you!!!!” and ultimately like 75% of what he does is entirely motivated by that end and like .... it’s never gonna happen in any universe/au like he should just give up now but ANYWAY there it is

I also think that ulek probably harbors a lot of guilt b/c of what happened to his mom especially if jareth is like “it’s ulek’s fault” and ulek is like “probably is yeah” 

oh! but also if ulek ever asked his dad about what his mom was like -- what would he say??? like would he play the ~grieving widower~ and be all “i loved her and now she’s dead and it was all b/c of you” or would it be clear that he didn’t care for her??

haha omg i forgot that ren is karthine but also oversaw the conquest of his planet hahahah #funtimes 

anyway I feel like ulek would largely ignore ren??? just b/c idk security is like there to be seen and not heard and idk he just doesn’t really think much about them tbh??? i mean corran is a little different b/c he’s his guard but like with ren and the others he doesn’t really think twice about them???/ but yeah idk how much they’d interact unless ren like always if/when ren searches them b/f they get within like 10000 feet of a quasar???

I feel like these two will NOT get along at all???? like they are both ~princes~ but omg like ulek is like “i just can’t wait to be king” while arth is like “PLEASE UNCLE HAVE 20394823948 KIDS SO I NEVER HAVE TO BE” and like ulek would def think that arth is just lazy and irresponsible and I feel like ulek doesn’t really have too much of a sense of humor and he’d just be like ????? why???? @ arth 24/7 

altho omg tho in which they put aside their differences to try to get torul to marry kahrin/adria/sera tho??? like he’s all about alliances and he’s got the harands (he thinks) b/c of mira (sorry mira) and so scoring the molecs would be awesome too??? (plus bonus points if it is sera or kahrin and they don’t have to live with him anymore)

OMG WUT EVEN  Ok so these two princes are the same age and they probs get thrown together at public events alot and I feel like Arth is like, “…” at almost everything Ulek says????  I mean, he def tries to be nice about it but he’s just like, “I wish Brie and Andros were here” the whole time, basically.  He probs does take the opportunity to be all, “Hey, so what about my uncle and your sister/cousin(s)?”

ANYWAY idk what arantha would think of ulek?????? he’s so ???? weird????? but yeah idk if you read his bio but I do think he cares for mira a lot and def means to make her happy and def has this ~fantasy~ of them ruling karth together, etc. etc.

yeah so I do think that ulek buys into everything that the quasars are selling (thanks dad!!) and while he’s not as big of a fanboy as jareth is (is that possible tho? ;DDD) he is a quasar supporter all the way and doesn’t stop to question them either???

I honestly have no idea??? sometimes I just like to think about family dinners b/c what??? is?? that??/ like????? (sera: not fun) but ah omg I agree!!!! I feel like all of the Tarks have such potential for interesting stuff b/c of all the stuff that’s gone on, haha. 

OKAY, so let’s start at the beginning ... 

First off, I feel like you said, at one point, that Jareth also kinda pitts his kids against each other??? Is that right???? Honestly, either way, I feel like Ulek has a weird relationship with his sister (but idk for sure b/c I need to talk to Lauren)??? And since he didn’t know his mom, I feel like Adria might be the closest thing he ever had to a mom??? Not that they have quite a mother/son relationship or anything, but I feel like she was this older (I mean by a few years but enough that it was a gap when they were kids, y’know?) female who probably kinda looked out for him??? and honestly, I feel like she might be partly responsible for kinda ~balancing~ Ulek out a little and he’s a better person than his father b/c ... well okay so that’s not really setting the bar that high honestly, but basically he’s not a little Jareth Jr. partly b/c of Adria’s influence, potentially??? 

I feel like he’s always clashed with Sera, tbh, and honestly he probably always considered Orion to be the baby of the family and enjoyed that he wasn’t the youngest anymore when he was around??? And so I feel like he may have been closest to Adria of his cousins???? 

So he def wasn’t surprised when Adria betrayed her father and did the ~right~ thing by VN/the Quasars, despite it being the hard thing and tbh he respects her for that (#facepalm). I think he’s proud that she’s risen so high w/ the Quasars but also kinda irritated that she went off to Arvor and they were stuck with Sera hahaha. 

Anyway, idk what Adria thinks of Ulek??? I mean, he does try to be a good person --  like A for effort, but yeah he can def be cruel and unfeeling sometimes and def blindly does whatever his dad says (or y’know tries to haha) ...

DADDY ISSUES 

can you just appreciate what it was like to grow up with the actual horse crab jareth tark as your dad???? 

because it really, really messed ulek up a lot

all his life his #1 goal was to please his father but tbh that was NEVER ever in the cards b/c jareth has impossibly high standards for both of his kids/nothing they do is ever right/if something goes wrong, it’s probably their fault

ulek is determined af tho and honestly does not see that his dad is 1) the worst human and 2) impossible to please and so when his dad says “jump” ulek is like “how high????” 

wants to be a good person tho

honestly thinks he is a good person???

but doesn’t know how to be a good person??? 

his example on how to do everything is literally jareth???? 

street smarts > book smarts

honestly your stereotypical karthine in a lot of ways

determined to be ~the warrior prince~ and honestly is an excellent fighter/soldier/leader/survivor (but he wouldn’t hear that from dad)

strives for excellence in himself and others 

won’t accept any less

thinks the other planets are inferior to karth 

i mean arvor is okay and the quasars are chill ( ;D) but he honestly doesn’t understand the appeal of any of the others tbh??? 

he’s not a huge traveler or reader and he’s pretty close minded on a lot of issues

that being said he truly does care for mira harand

she’s the only person in his life who has showed him unconditional kindness/has received it from him in return

he thinks he does love her and maybe in does in a way, but he also has no idea how a functional relationship works/what love is 

does mean to take care of her/treat her well/have a happy life with her once they marry 

(it’s not if in ulek’s mind tbh it’s when #facepalm) 

cares a LOT about his planet and his people tho (even if he doesn’t really give two shits about anyone else) 

would gladly give his life for karth

tbh dying in battle is probably how he wants to go out

knows he will be king one day and that’s not a responsibility he means to take lightly 

ulek would probably be a pretty decent ruler if it wasn’t for his dad’s influence tbh??? 

like he has pretty good judgement most of the time but if his dad swoops in and is like “let’s burn this entire village to the ground for the fun of it” ulek would literally be like “omg dad that’s brilliant i can’t believe i didn’t think of it first lets do it” #facepalm

would honestly do ANYTHING for his family/people and isn’t above using underhanded methods to get the job done 

does really buy into the idea that royals houses are superior to commoners and men to women. that being said, he also believes it is his duty to protect them

he can be really condescending and insensitive sometimes but he doesn’t realize it 

honestly he def can be hella selfish and self centered sometimes

he also has a terrible temper and it doesn’t come out too often but when it does, it’s honestly terrifying???? honestly he does keep a lot of his frustrations built up inside and he suffers in silence but then he just explodes (sometimes over little things) and it’s not pretty
