I love to imagine chunky guys experiencing that empty, stomach-gnawing hunger that turns their guts into rumbling beasts. Since they’re usually well-fed, the notion that their greedy belly isn’t getting their fill sets it into a roaring craze. And, you know, you’d think that their thick tummy would do well as to muffling the growls. Nah, it’s like a volcanic eruption; the burning, hungry stomach noises letting everyone know that it’s time to -eat-, or else.

So @lonesome-vagabond and I came up with something.

To get my shots fired, here's the first time Snufkin ever sits to eat with the Moomins:

(he doesn't really eat anything, staring threateningly at your soul, his plate is still quite full and he doesn't even touch his fork)

When I first watched Moominvalley (1990), it bothered me that everyone ate except for the one child who spent his whole days fishing and never ate the fish he caught, not once. So today I scrolled through the entire series and captured every and each moment Snufkin ever put anything in his mouth (aside from coffee, Moomin, hot chocolate, tea and harmonica):

1- Moomin hands him an apple

2- Moomin hands him a piece of bread

3- With the Moomins, table filled with cake and pine needles, Snufkin eats some kind of flat red bread

4- With the Moomins (+ Hemulen), table filled with desserts of all sorts, Snufkin eats a few pieces of pumpkin

5- With the Moomins, table filled with desserts of all sorts, Snufkin eats half a piece of pie

6- Moominmamma cooks him some soup

7- "Anything from this place is good food" | "Really? *immediately nom noms cherry like a hungry child*" | "Snuuufkiiiin!" | "Oops! Sorry, Moominmamma!"

8- Moomin comes to talk and Snufkin decides to cook himself some milky stuff

9- With the Moomins, table filled with fish dishes and vegetables, Snufkin eats more milky stuff

That kit only ever eats when Moomintroll or Moominmamma are around. I could end the post here because I know that, at this point, you probably have some theories already, but,

You all know when someone eats something and gets terribly sick because of it, they'd never want to eat that one thing again. It is actually very likely for Snufkin, as someone who started travelling at a very young age by himself, to have eaten some poisonous or inedible stuff and went through enough pain to be overly careful with what he eats now, only being able to trust Moominmamma's cooking and the food Moomintroll hands him;

From what I've read, people who grow in food-lacking ambiences may be unable to eat normal amounts of food because they'd rather save the food for later (after all, they don't know if they'll have anything to eat tomorrow) or give it to someone else who needs it better. If you believe Snufkin grew up in Mymblehouse or in an orphanage/park before running away, then it is thinkable that he struggled to even get himself any food because of the many other starved kids, deciding not to eat, in the end, so that others could. But the thing to trigger those could also be the fact he is a traveller and can't help but pocket and pack all the food he finds instead of eating it;

Lastly, as a cat owner, I know most cats just won't eat around people they don't trust, and might even throw up out of the stress of eating around them. Maybe mumriks are no different, maybe Snufkin is unable to eat around anybody but Moominmamma and Moomintroll.

Well, that's it. Those are the main three reasons I can find for Snufkin's shy eating. Sickness/poisoning trauma, or the aftermath of food lack, or trust issues.
