imagine: an au where rust grew up in the first generation cult but he’s too little to remember any of the fucked up shit bc 1) it still seemed like a proper religion at the time 2) the perverse and twisted shit never got to him before the cult sprawled to second generation. he got involved with billie lee tuttle years later when the case was still hot, but he didn’t remember this billy lee tuttle despite billy young involvement in the cult (maybe he was 20 something when rust was like, 3?), but billy recognised him (idk how but he just clocks it when they met, name, a face feature or wtv). they played the long game of chase until 2002 when rust quit and broke into his house. he got caught. billy played his game, a different kind. yk where i’m going with this? yea.

anyway, more twisted shit happened i guess, and rust got out, with the incriminating evidence. he didn’t care about himself. billy killed himself. he got super fucked up at this point. he’s determined (and insane). he’s got a new purpose. so he tracked down the third generation; cohle (ha!) case opened. he needed marty. things went like the episodes until the last scene where he’s called little priest, following a bride’s path. rust got, spooked? just reliving traumas then. his daughter, well shit. the kids he and marty saved before? and himself at this point? boiling fucking hell.

turns out the maze has an underground, layers of it. little priest got caught again. errol said join me in my ascension. they disappeared into the underground maze. marty got desperate. marty shouted. no avail. marty weren’t hurt by errol—did rust…?

anyway. cut to months later and rust got out. he’s not himself. he killed errol. he’s not himself. he’s not rust. he’s not anyone. he found marty and marty. cried
