Yemeni Sword
Dated: late 18th century; blade - early 17th century
Maker: unknown
Culture: Cairo, Egypt and Solingen, Germany
Medium: iron or steel, silver and gold, chased
Measurements: blade length 80 cm
Markings: the running wolf mark of Solingen
Inscriptions: in Persian, to the effect that sword belonged to Shah Jahan Badshali Gazie
According to the people at “Oriental-Arms” this type of sword is rather old. They were common in Yemen in the 16th to the late 18th or early 19th century at the most and disappeared or better replaced with the Nimcha style sword at mid to late 19th century.
Several similar exemplars are on exhibit in the main museum of San’a’. The original scabbards for these type of swords usually includes a silver strip spirally bound on it. A very similar spiral binding is also common on Bukhara swords as well as other oriental swords.
