again im totally not trying to absolve alma of her characters wrongs or woobify her or anything i just think reading avatar raceblindly does a disservice to the potential the setting has for commentary on realworld issues, which is ostensibly like the whole point of a story like this

reiterating the impact of facelessness/racelessness in the workplace with another anecdote: over an email today someone presumptuously referred to the director as my fucking colleague (i'm a serious small fry in this organization). then i went downstairs to the break room and a white volunteer visibly and audibly bemoaned my presence to my face. i was told to let it go. i asked her politely if she would please respect me like any other employee at the organization and she pretty much menaced me into the stairwell. it's degrading as fuck to be here in real but the power i feel when i get an email from someone who has never seen me and treats me with respect is unparalleled. truly in the workplace i feel more connection to my Email Self than my flesh body that earns me nothing but disrespect no matter how "professional" my dress or haircut or mannerisms. the psychological out of body experience u get from a bifurcated and dissonant online/offline experience at work is crazy. and i work in an arts and culture org that should be relatively progressive!!! im just saying if i worked for Mercer i would jack into the blue suit and never look back.

as someone who was briefly a woman of color in stem (im now a man of color in a pink collar job #thriving) i often wonderrrr if the avatar was empowering to alma in the workplace. when i was a stem fem my superiors didn't take me seriously when i met with them in person, and their treatment of me noticeably shifted when i started meeting with them through zoom during covid and was no longer physically a foot below them and when my asian features were somewhat obscured by a shitty webcam. also i have an anecdote from a friend whose racist family member was IN LOVE with netytiri until he realized she was portrayed by a black woman. when he realized she was zoe saldana under the blue cgi he reacted like he'd been catfished.

in a meta sense i think white guys see black woman characters very differently through the lens of a na'vi or avatar body and i wonder if that might extend in-universe.

obviously spending all her time in the avatar was an unhealthy way of coping with identity issues but i wonder if those identity issues had anything to do with how she was treated in the RDA as a black woman. plus we don't know how tall alma is because this is a video game but i think she's extremely 5 foot coded and regardless physically towering over men who metaphorically look down on you i think would probably be an ego boost.

i'd like to believe Human racism and sexism aren't as big of a problem by 2154 but if they werent ingrained into the fabric of the culture i think they wouldnt be doing any of that shit to pandora in the first place like i have no evidence but i imagine an antiracist culture probably would not genocide and colonize a species of indigenous-coded blue alien people. also the way mercer talks about the humanities reeks of scott yenorism

yeah just the resistance!! i have a distinct feeling that the sheer volume of defectors the RDA gets has to be like covered up or written off in some way. because that number cannot be marginal. like it looks pretty bad to whoever you answer to as a corporate-governmental entity(? what even is the rda i still dont know lmao) especially if theres living family connected to these defectors who might protest their loved one being trapped indefinitely on an alien moon as punishment for deciding they don't want to facilitate an oil war. the RDA would want these resistance defectors to be faceless terrorists and radicalized loners. nalin is kind of a poster perfect example of the resistance being mostly normal sane people with loved ones who will miss them and i think the rda doesn't want that picture out there

i imagine because of this emely has like no clue about the extent of nalin's involvement in happenings on the western front. maybe she was told that nalin just disappeared and has been missing for years, maybe she was told nalin died in some stupid ass way supposedly resulting in completely unrecoverable remains that she's always found sus, maybe they even told her she was killed BY the resistance, but whatever the RDA's explanation is for her absence i feel like she'd be drawn to pandora seeking closure regardless
