Maybe you’ve noticed: there’s been a shift in how people and movements that are anti-trans present themselves, and it feels designed to make them more palatable to people who would otherwise recoil at arguments that position trans people as threats. They don’t hate trans people! They’re very concerned about them! Think of the risks! Think of the children!! If that language sounds familiar, it’s because the anti-abortion movement uses this same playbook. Just like a crisis pregnancy center might advertise itself as offering pre-natal care, counseling or free pregnancy tests, an anti-trans provider might offer “gender exploratory” therapy or claim to offer valuable information on the “harms” of transition. Just like reporters being too willing to parrot unsubstantiated, anti-choice claims to the greater public, anti-trans groups are using places like the New York Times—and the fact that many people within those spaces were already held anti-trans beliefs-- to spread misinformation and position their “experts” as the reliable voices on trans care. Quite contrary to articles that claim people are being rushed through transition, accessing gender affirming care remains difficult for most people, especially young people. There are a limited number of places that provide it (and, due to transphobic violence both digital and physical, some of the places that used to aren’t able to anymore), waiting lists, and a dozen other barriers to access. Not to mention that plenty of elements of transition, especially physical transition, require at least a letter from a therapist. And now, on top of that, you have healthcare providers and resources who seek only to discourage or pressure all trans and nonbinary folks into not transitioning. This is a recipe for trans folks, or the people helping them access care, to walk right into a trap, and enables ongoing, anti-trans bias more broadly. Here's a guide from Scarleteen co-director Sam Wall to help trans people, and especially, adults in the lives of trans young people, to identify legitimate — and illegitimate — sources of trans care.

Ralph Kerwineo (deceased)
Gender: Transgender man
Sexuality: N/A
DOB: April 1876
RIP: Unknown
Ethnicity: African American, Native American
Occupation: Office clerk
Note: Became most known after a 1914 incident in which Mamie White, the woman who had lived as Kerwineo’s wife for over ten years, revealed to the local police Kerwineo’s “true sex”. It was supposedly in retaliation to a legal marriage of Kerwineo and twenty-one-year-old Dorothy Kleinowski, and resulted in a police arrest and trial for disorderly conduct. The Milwaukee press followed the case with keen interest, however this local coverage did not pathologize Kerwineo, but preferred to describe a story of an upstanding citizen who donned male dress to support female partners. All charges were ultimately dropped.

Local resources for trans Floridians looking to leave the state or find a new HRT provider
Most trans folks here have now learned about SB 254, which has effectively ground gender affirming care to a halt for both youth and adults. You can see my last post here.
1) If you need to request resources, including financial aid, try Southern Equality. Right now, they have mini grants of $500 for people looking to leave the state.
https://southernequality.org/flresources/
2) If you are going to be staying in Florida, but need help finding a new in-state provider that can provide HRT, try the Umbrella Guide. Do note that HRT state-wide seems to be paused while we waiting for the state to create the new informed consent form. I am now hearing this could be as late as July.
Feel free to tack on other local resources.
As always, the best way to help trans Floridians is to give them money -- please consider donating to the many GoFundMes out there.

seriously if you step into any offline queer space for like two seconds you'll be staggered by the actual diversity of nonbinary people. I knew someone in college who was amab and balding and had a moustache and dressed like a dad and used she/her pronouns exclusively. I knew multiple people who you'd assume at first sight were cishet who used he/she/they. there are people you can't sort into amab and afab because it's literally impossible to tell because they've been playing 4D gender chess for 30 years.
like. none of it matters. you can make as many boxes and labels as you want, it's not gonna stop people from just being people.

Participate in a study about designing technology for gender transition!
Hi all! I’m looking for participants for the final study of my dissertation and would really appreciate it if you could participate or reblog this. Please see the recruiting message below! Feel free to DM me if you have any questions :)
-
We are looking for trans people 18+ to participate in one of two online focus groups! You may be invited to complete a sketching task, followed by a 1.5 hour workshop on Zoom. Then, you have the option to participate in a Discord server to complete additional activities lasting about two days.
All focus groups will be run by a community member who is personally familiar with gender transition. Zoom participants will be compensated with $30 via Paypal or Venmo. If you are selected to participate in the Discord server, you’ll receive an additional $20 for a total of $50.
If you would like to be involved, please fill out this survey to express your interest in participating in the study!

Need a therapist letter for trans surgery?
Check the GALAP Directory! The Gender Affirming Letter Access Project is a directory of US based therapists organized by state that are willing to write surgery support letters without gatekeeping! Short appointments, generally free letters.
The site lists out therapist names and locations as well as open trans/non-binary status & whether or not a therapist is a PoC.
