The Attendee Who Never Was

I had thought of going to DashCon because it wasn't too far for me, but ultimately did not go.

I was going to go to see what it was like for myself, admittedly with the perception it was a shitshow, and to get the lowdown.

My original plan was see about getting some video of the state of things, throw Lacrimosa over it (the same song Strange Aeons uses below) and call it a day. I think I decided against it because that would just be a shitty thing to do. I think I was also not feeling like it was a trip worth taking just for that reason alone.

I was reminded of this from watching this video from Strange Aeons, and I appreciate the effort it took to get the real story.

I dunno how to Tumblr, though I had a vague idea about what it was. I imagine I would be spotted as a Twitter interloper pretty easily.

Hearing people say they felt accepted was a nice surprise.

I was trying to remember what kind of person I was back then. Two years earlier, I went to Ravinia for a performance of The Magic Flute narrated by John de Lancie, and there were several MLP fans in attendance, of which I was one. I've been a Trekkie for most of my life, so it was interesting to see the unexpected blend of Trek and MLP. I'd like to think I'd have a similar experience: folks who would be welcoming and unapologetically themselves.

Also holy fuck I missed out on meeting Doug Jones. Fuck.

In an odd way, I kind of regret not checking it out for myself, even though the interest was fueled by the people talking shit about it online. It would have been extremely low risk for me, and maybe it would have been a cool time. At the very least, I could have witnessed the ball pit for myself in all its glory and horror.
