Wednesdays in Brno: Cash Flow and international friendships
For the past month, I've been part of a fascinating international group in Brno that meets every Wednesday evening to play ‘Cash Flow’. These weekly gatherings in a lively event bar have become a highlight in my calendar - a perfect mix of fun, learning and networking.
‘Cash Flow’, developed by Robert Kiyosaki in 1996, is more than a game. It brings the principles of his 1997 bestseller ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’ to life. Kiyosaki's book revolutionised the way many view money and investing by emphasising the importance of financial education.
Tumblr media
Our diverse group consists of entrepreneurs, employees and students from all over the world. We play in English, which leads to lively, multinational discussions. Everyone brings unique perspectives that often go far beyond the game.
These meetings have changed the way we look at finance. We now see money as a tool to be understood and used wisely. At the same time, we have made valuable friendships across national borders.
The Wednesday evenings in Brno are more than just a game - they are an investment in our future and in a global community. We not only share our knowledge of finance, but also our cultural experiences and life wisdom.

An unforgettable adventure in the Punkva Caves
Last week I finally had the opportunity to explore the famous Punkva Caves in the Moravian Karst. This trip had been on my bucket list for a long time, and I have to say: it was worth it!
Tumblr media
The history of these fascinating caves goes back a long way. Parts of the caves were explored as early as the 17th century, but it wasn't until 1909 that the Czech speleologist Karel Absolon succeeded in penetrating deeper into the underground labyrinth. His discoveries led to the caves being opened to the public in 1910.
My adventure began with an exciting ride in the cable car. As we floated gently over the picturesque landscape of the Moravian Karst, I could hardly contain my anticipation of the subterranean experience to come. The view from the top was breathtaking and gave a foretaste of the natural wonders that awaited me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once inside the caves, I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over thousands of years. Our guide explained that some of these formations grow up to 1cm per century - a fascinating thought of the time spans that nature has been at work here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the boat trip on the underground river Punkva. In the silence of the cave, interrupted only by the gentle lapping of the water, I felt like I was in another world. When we reached the famous Macocha Abyss, I was speechless in the face of the enormous 138 metre deep gorge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Punkva Caves are not only a natural wonder, but also a testament to human exploration and perseverance. The thought of the early explorers who explored this subterranean world with simple means is remarkable.
After the excursion, I was amazed at what Mother Nature is capable of and grateful for this unique experience. The Punkva Caves are definitely worth a visit - a fascinating journey into the depths of the earth and the history of human exploration.

Czech Cuisine: A Feast for the Palate and History
Czech cuisine is characterised by hearty dishes that warm both body and soul. Its roots delve deep into Central European history, influenced by Bohemian, Austrian, and Hungarian traditions.
In the Middle Ages, the diet of common folk was dominated by grains, legumes, and seasonal vegetables. Meat was a luxury reserved for special occasions. Over time, robust stews like "bramboračka" (potato soup) became dietary staples.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 19th century brought culinary innovations. The famous "dumplings" (knedlíky) gained popularity, inspired by Austrian influences during the Habsburg Monarchy. "Svíčková", beef sirloin in cream sauce, became a festive dish.
"Smažený sýr" (breaded cheese) emerged in the 1950s as a meatless alternative during communism and is now a popular snack. The traditional "vepřo-knedlo-zelo" (roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut) symbolises the down-to-earth nature of Czech cuisine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A modern interpretation of "smažený sýr" is the popular dish "smažák". It consists of a large piece of breaded and deep-fried cheese, served with chips and tartar sauce. This dish emerged in the 1960s and 1970s when Czech gastronomy sought affordable and filling options. The fried cheese, originally conceived as a meat substitute, became a cult dish in snack bars and restaurants. The combination with chips and the tangy tartar sauce made it a full-fledged main course, particularly popular among young people and as a late-night snack.
Beer, brewed since medieval times, is not just a beverage but a cultural asset. Pilsner, developed in Pilsen in 1842, revolutionised global beer culture.
Sweet specialities like "trdelník" (chimney cake) and "koláče" (fruit pastries) round off the culinary heritage.
Czech cuisine tells a story of tradition, adaptability, and the richness of a chequered history – a delight for all the senses.

Sunday Stroll Through Brno's Old Town: A Place of Endless Discoveries
On a sunny Sunday, I ambled through the picturesque lanes of Brno's Old Town and was once again enchanted by its timeless beauty. Brno, the second-largest city in the Czech Republic, surprises me with its hidden treasures and rich history every time I visit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Old Town, the heart of Brno, is a living museum of architecture. The buildings reflect centuries of European history. Particularly impressive is St. Peter and Paul's Cathedral, which majestically towers over the city. Its distinctive spires, visible from afar, serve as a reminder of the significant role the church played in Brno's past. I've already written a detailed blog post about this fascinating cathedral, so I won't go into too much detail here.
During my stroll, I discovered a small, hidden alleyway that I had never noticed before. It led me to a charming courtyard where a small café invited passersby to linger. Here, away from the tourist hustle and bustle, I could enjoy the authentic atmosphere of the city and observe how locals spent their Sunday.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brno has a fascinating history dating back to the 5th century. In the Middle Ages, the city was an important trading centre, and later, under Habsburg rule, it developed into a significant industrial and cultural centre of Moravia. This rich past is reflected in every corner of the Old Town.
A highlight of my walk was Freedom Square (náměstí Svobody), the vibrant centre of the city. Here stands the famous Plague Column, a Baroque monument from the 17th century commemorating the city's deliverance from the plague. Surrounded by splendid townhouses and modern shops, the square is a perfect example of the successful blend of old and new in Brno.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every visit to Brno's Old Town is a journey through time and an opportunity to discover something new. Whether you're admiring the impressive architecture, stopping at one of the many cosy cafés, or simply strolling through the alleys - the Old Town of Brno remains an enchanting spot that always invites exploration.

A Green Oasis of Science: The Botanical Garden of Masaryk University
Nestled in the bustling city of Brno lies a hidden gem: the Botanical Garden of the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University. Founded in 1922, shortly after the establishment of the university itself, this garden has evolved into a veritable paradise for plant enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Tumblr media
Upon my visit, I was immediately captivated by the diversity of plants and the meticulously landscaped grounds. The garden spans an area of about 1.5 hectares and houses an impressive collection of over 5,000 plant species from around the globe.
The greenhouses undoubtedly form the centrepiece of the garden. Here, I entered a fascinating world of tropical and subtropical vegetation. Particularly impressive was the greenhouse with its small pond, upon which majestic water lilies spread. The enormous leaves of the Victoria water lily floated like green islands on the water's surface, conveying a sense of tranquillity and exoticism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the most captivating sights in the greenhouse was the Purple Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata). Its intricate lavender blooms, featuring a crown of delicate filaments, created a mesmerising display. This climbing beauty, native to the southeastern United States, not only adds a splash of colour but also serves as a testament to the garden's diverse collection of global flora.
Another highlight was the cactus room. The variety of shapes and sizes of the succulents was overwhelming. From tiny, spherical cacti to imposing columnar ones – each plant told its own story of adaptation to extreme living conditions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The outdoor area of the garden was no less impressive. Well-maintained paths meandered through beds of native and exotic plants. Especially in spring and summer, when the flowers are in full bloom, the garden transforms into a sea of colours.
What makes the Botanical Garden of Masaryk University so special is its blend of beauty and science. It serves not only as a place of recreation for visitors but also as an important centre for research and teaching. Students and scientists use the garden for their studies, whilst visitors have the opportunity to experience the fascinating world of plants up close.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A visit to the Botanical Garden of Masaryk University is a journey through the global plant world – from tropical rainforests to deserts, all united in one place. It is a site that celebrates the beauty and diversity of nature and reminds us of the importance of preserving it.

Hidden history: the water tanks under Žlutý Kopec
When I visited the underground water tanks under the Žlutý Kopec in Brno on Sunday, I felt like an explorer of times long past. These hidden spaces, deep inside the ‘Yellow Mountain’, tell a fascinating story of the city's development.
Tumblr media
Built between 1896 and 1900, these tanks were a response to Brno's rapid growth. The city urgently needed a modern water supply, and these underground giants were to be the solution. With an impressive total capacity of 20,000 cubic metres of water, they reliably supplied the burgeoning industrial city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On entering the plant, I was overwhelmed by the size and architecture. High vaults and massive pillars bear witness to the engineering skills of the time. The echo of my footsteps in the empty tanks gave me an idea of the dimensions of this underground cathedral.
Tumblr media
In the past, water was collected from the surrounding springs and stored here. An ingenious system of pumps and pipes then distributed it throughout the city. This system changed the daily lives of the people of Brno over a century ago.
Today, the tanks are no longer used to supply water, but their historical significance is undiminished. Occasionally, cultural events even take place here - a creative upcycling of industrial history. When I stepped out into the daylight again, I saw Žlutý Kopec with different eyes. Hidden beneath this inconspicuous elevation is a masterpiece of engineering.

Špilberk: a fortress full of stories and breathtaking views
The Špilberk Fortress rises majestically high above Brno, a fascinating testimony to centuries of history. My walk begins at the foot of the hill, surrounded by well-tended parks that invite you to linger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ascent is a relaxing walk for all the senses. With every step, an increasingly impressive view over the city reveals itself. The various roofs of the old town form a wonderful contrast to the modern cityscape.
Once at the top, a breathtaking 360-degree panorama rewards the effort of the climb. The fortress itself impresses with its imposing architecture, which harmoniously combines different eras.
Tumblr media
Founded in the 13th century by King Přemysl Ottokar II, Špilberk initially served as a royal castle and residence of Moravian margraves. The robust walls tell of turbulent times when the fortress was reinforced in the 17th century to protect against Ottoman attacks and rebuilt into a Baroque fortress.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Špilberk's history is fascinating: from a royal castle to a mighty Baroque fortress to today's living museum. Every stone tells stories of kings, brave defenders and cultural heritage.

A sunny Sunday in Brno: a walk, a view and the sound of the organ
Last Sunday I had a wonderful day in Brno, which completely enchanted me with its beauty and atmosphere. My day began with a leisurely stroll through the Denis Garden, a green oasis in the centre of the city.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The well-tended paths of the garden led me through flowering beds and shady groups of trees. The twittering of birds and the gentle rustling of leaves in the wind created a peaceful atmosphere that made me forget about everyday life for a while.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I reached the highest point of the garden, I had a breathtaking view over Brno. The city spread out before me, a sea of red-tiled roofs and green parkland, criss-crossed by the glistening ribbons of the Svratka and Svitava rivers. In the distance, I could even make out the rolling hills of the Moravian countryside.
Tumblr media
The highlight of my trip, however, was a visit to the Cathedral of St Peter and Paul. Even from a distance, I could see its striking Gothic towers rising into the sky. As I entered, the cool, venerable atmosphere of the church interior enveloped me. The colourful stained glass windows bathed the interior in a mystical light.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Luckily for me, an organ rehearsal was taking place. The powerful sounds of the organ filled the entire cathedral. After leaving the venerable hall, I felt refreshed and inspired.

A quiet Saturday in the ossuary
On Saturday I made my way to the ossuary of St Jacob's Church. These special places, also known as ossuaries, have a long history in Europe. Since the Middle Ages, they have been used to store exhumed bones when cemeteries were overcrowded.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ossuary at St Jakob's is a place of peace and contemplation. The neatly stacked bones and skulls remind us of the transience of life, but also of the dignity with which our ancestors treated their dead. It is remarkable that many of the bones kept here were added after the Thirty Years' War - a silent testimony to the devastating effects of this conflict.
In the dim light of the ossuary, my thoughts wandered to the people whose remains rest here. Who were they? What stories could they tell?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This visit was a powerful experience - a reminder to cherish life while accepting death as a natural part of our existence. But it also reminds us how precious peace is. Living in a world without wars makes our existence particularly worth living. May we take this realisation with us into our everyday lives and work towards a more peaceful future.

Metal spectacle at the Melodka Club
Last Friday, i was in the Melodka Club witnessed an impressive metal double bill.
A seven-piece Czech band kicked things off, surprising the audience with their unique line-up. In addition to the classic metal instruments, a violin and a flute enriched their sound. This unusual combination created a captivating mixture of hard riffs and folkloristic sounds that captivated the audience from the very beginning.
Main act Finsterforst from Germany then presented their version of pagan metal. With powerful guitars and polyphonic vocals, they transported the audience into the mystical world of their lyrics.
Tumblr media
The audience was enthusiastic about both acts and celebrated from the first to the last song. After three intense hours and several encores, an evening ended that impressively demonstrated the diversity of the metal scene.
Both the innovative Czech band and the established Finsterforst showed how exciting and varied modern metal can be. Anyone who missed this concert should take the next opportunity to see these bands live.

An Enchanting Weekend in Brno: Old Town, Music, and More
My first weekend in Brno, the second-largest city in the Czech Republic, was a true journey of discovery. The city immediately captivated me with its charm and vibrant atmosphere.
Exploring the Picturesque Old Town on Foot
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Saturday morning, I set out to explore the Old Town on foot. Every street and square told its own story. The magnificent Baroque buildings, winding alleys, and impressive churches testify to Brno's rich history. I was particularly fascinated by Freedom Square (náměstí Svobody) with its distinctive plague column and modern astronomical clock.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brno's Pulsating Music Scene
What really surprised me was the city's incredibly vibrant music scene. Brno offers an impressive variety of musical experiences, which I was able to experience firsthand this weekend.
Saturday evening took me to St. James Square, where I experienced an exhilarating live performance by a trance DJ. The energetic atmosphere and hypnotic beats transformed the historic square into a pulsating open-air dance floor. It was fascinating to see how electronic music and historical architecture formed a perfect symbiosis here.
On Sunday, I experienced a wonderful contrast. In brilliant sunshine, a jazz event took place in Moravian Square Park. The gentle sounds of jazz music wafting through the park created a relaxed yet lively atmosphere. Numerous visitors had made themselves comfortable on picnic blankets or were dancing cheerfully to the music. It was the perfect end to a musically diverse weekend.
Tumblr media
An Unforgettable Stay
This first weekend in Brno has far exceeded my expectations. The combination of historical charm and modern flair, coupled with the pulsating music scene, makes the city a true gem. I'm enjoying every moment of my stay and look forward to discovering more of this fascinating city in the coming days.
Brno has definitely conquered a place in my heart, and I can't wait to learn more about its culture, history, and of course, its diverse music scene. From the majestic Old Town to the lively squares and parks - this weekend was just the beginning of a wonderful journey through this enchanting Czech city.
