I saw this on Facebook and had to look it up. It really happened, albeit the details are different. From Homesteading Space: The Skylab Story:
"On the evening of MD-46, I finally played the trick that had been in work for over two month," said Garriott. "It even had the flight controllers puzzled for twenty-five years! My objective was to pretend that my wife, Helen, had come up to Skylab to bring us a hot meal, even though this was an obvious impossibility. Here is how the scheme worked. I recorded her voice on my small hand-held tape recorder before flight, pretending to have a brief conversation with a Capcom, with time gaps for his replies. The Capcom would be my only accomplice, but his role would be carefully disguised.
It was also necessary to have some recent event mentioned to validate the currency of the dialogue, so it would seem it could not have been recorded before fight. The short dialogue is printed below in its entirety. I knew that both Bob Crippen and Karl Henize were going to be Capcoms for Skylab, so they were brought into the planning, given the script and rehearsed on their timing. They kept the short script on a piece of paper in their billfolds, awaiting the right moment.
"For our flight in August-September, there would be many occasions of natural disasters involving forest fires or hurricanes, which would be widely known throughout the United States. So a few comments about one or the other were made on the tape. This led to four different scripts being recorded, one for each of the two Capcoms and one each for the two natural events. I would play the tape on the normal air-to-ground voice link with my wife's recorded voice and the Capcom would respond as if totally surprised by the female interloper."
Near the end of one period of voice contact Garriott said to the ground, "I'll have something for you on the next pass, Bob." Crippen replied, "Roger that, Owen." Then quietly and surreptitiously, he reviewed the brief script that had been in his pocket for all these weeks. Soon after coming into voice range, the ground heard this voice on the standard air-to-ground link:
Skylab (a female voice): "Gad, I don't see how the boys manage to get rid of the feedback berween these speakers.... Hello Houston, how are you reading me down there? (s sec. pause) Hello Houston, are you reading Skylab?"
Capcom: "Skylab, this is Houston. We heard you alright, but had difficulty recognizing your voice. Who do we have on the line up there?"
Skylab: "Hello Houston. Roger. Well I haven't talked with you for a while. Isn't that you down there, Bob? This is Helen, here in Skylab. The boys hadn't had a good home cooked meal in so long, I thought I'd bring one up. Over"
Capcom: "Roger, Skylab. Someone's gotta be pulling my leg, Helen. Where are you?"
Skylab: "Right here in Skylab, Bob. Just a few orbits ago we were looking down on those forest fires in California. The smoke sure covers a lot of territory, and, oh boy, the sunrises are just beautiful! Oh oh..... See you later, Bob. I hear the boys coming up here and I'm not supposed to be on the radio."
"Then quiet returned to the voice link, but we were told later, Bob Crippen had lots of questions coming his way in the Control Center," Garriott said. "What was going on? Where was this voice coming from? Bob must have been a very good actor, because he claimed complete ignorance and innocence of how it happened. Everyone heard it coming down on the air-to-ground loop. The whole two-way conversation sounded like a perfectly normal dialogue. No breaks or gaps, and they all heard Bob respond in real time. Could I have recorded Helen's voice on a 'family conversation' from our home? Yes, but there was no recent one. How would she have known about the fires, or who was to be on Capcom duty and how could she respond to Bob's comments in real time, as everyone could hear?
"No one ever worked out how this was accomplished. Finally, at our twenty-fifth reunion celebration in Houston in 1998, and with many of the flight directors and controllers present and still with no clue as to how it was done, I described it all as above. My prejudiced opinion is that this was the best 'gotcha' ever perpetrated on our friendly flight controllers!"
Crippen recalled: "That was kind of a fun trick. There was head rubbing.
Everybody in the MOCR, or the control room, was looking like, What the hell is going on?' We did a good job. It was fun. Working those missions got to be tough. We did all kinds of things to try to come up with levity. That was a nice one that the crew got that the ground control didn't know about."

Minnesota's Largest Indian Reservation Celebrates First Home-Born Bison Calf https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/minnesotas-largest-indian-reservation-celebrates-first-home-born-bison-calf/
Tumblr media
The White Earth Nation was surprised and overjoyed as a bison calf was born out of season, a sign the band said demonstrates “resilience, healing, and hope.”
It’s the first bison calf born on the White Earth Reservation since it started a buffalo harvest and breeding program two years ago through the Inter-Tribal Buffalo Council.
Bison typically give birth in the spring, and the tribe’s bison foreman, Jack Heisler, said it’s an example of how wildlife “doesn’t follow a script.”
“This bison calf being born, it didn’t follow a script either, because the mama is so young,” Heisler told MPR News.
The White Earth Band is the largest of the six band which make up the Minnesota Chippewa, and their reservation is the largest in the state by land area. Its bison herd numbers 10, a number the nation hopes to grow to 44 by next year.
“This historic birth marks a new chapter in our ongoing efforts to restore the bison to Anishinaabe lands, reconnecting with a sacred relative that once roamed freely across our homelands,” the tribe posted on Facebook. “The calf’s arrival is more than just a moment of joy. It’s a sign of resilience, healing, and hope for future generations.”

It was cocky and overconfident to call the Titanic "unsinkable" but one thing that's overlooked is that she was genuinely really, unusually solid. She could float even with 4 compartments fully flooded, which even a lot of modern day ships can't do.
And it's not like they were wrong about her being solid! Olympic, her identical sister ship, survived being torpedoed and then running over the U-Boat that fired that torpedo. Those ships were solid.
It's very clear that absolutely no other ship in 1912 would have been able to survive that collision, and it's a testament to the quality of the ship that she didn't sink in a few minutes Empress of Ireland style. Part of what makes the Titanic such a tragic story is that it isn't a group of rich idiots locking themselves in a shoddy iron barrel to go 4km underwater. It was 2200 people, most of whom were poor immigrants, on a reliable ship on a commonly-made journey, and then something went horribly, unpredictably wrong.

Sean MacGuire and laughing after being slapped across the face. Sean MacGuire and smiling, giggling, while constantly being rejected, never really holding any expectations of anyone else. Never expecting that true acceptance he seeks. Sean MacGuire brushing off the torture and terror he's been through the past two weeks just to grin and joke, so nobody will worry too much. Sean MacGuire chasing a woman who vaccilates in whether or not she wants him, happy when she gives him the time of day, not complaining when she doesn't. Sean MacGuire and putting all his love and light and laughter into the world and being rewarded by rolling eyes and derisive comments, but doing it anyway because nobody else will. Sean MacGuire staying optimistic, carefree, joking. Filling the role he's been given in the gang, being told off if he stops doing so.
Dutch van der Linde laughing, telling Arthur Morgan "He's just a younger version of you!"

me: truly a well crafted tragedy is such a bittersweet pleasure to take in and serves a purpose, not just as a sad story but as a reminder that even that which ends badly might not have happened in vain or for nothing. The love, the grief, the actions still meant something simply for having taken place and for us partaking in it.
me when said tragedy is about to actually unfold, sweating: ok but consider this. i dont want this to happen

I know my arts have always been OC focused, but I'm simply in my RDR2 brainrot 24/7 phase....
So have a soft-smile Arthur portrait (a study of Art Nouveau and his facial features because I plan to draw this man a loooooot.
And yes, this made me create a RDR OC that I haven't shown here yet, maybe when I get less anxious about it?
Thanks to @beccacamposartwork to encourage me to post 😭

Have a little Isaac too, since he's alive in my AU 🤍
In my head he's a mini Arthur :)
Have you made it this far?! Here's a little fun fact about the flowers symbolism!
Purple Gladiolus: strength of character, remembrance, faithfulness, moral integrity.
Daisies: innocence, purity, new beginnings, cheerfulness.

it is known that arthur sees what he lost in john and that's why it revolts him to see him leave abigail and jack behind constantly, but what i think few people talk about is that arthur probably sees himself in jack, at least for the first 3 chapters.
as all the dialogues regarding arthur's childhood and relationship with his parents reveal, he was much closer to his mother than he was to his father, who was neglectful at best and abusive at worst. yet, he seems to have never stopped seeking his approval, as it can be symbolized through the fact he still wears his father's hat despite their admittedly turbulent relationship.
it is very plausible that the reason arthur is so critical of john for neglecting abigail and jack is that he sees john taking for granted the same people that he lost (eliza and isaac), but it's also very plausible that he is revolted by it because he has been in jack's position before: had an outlaw father whom he looked up to and tried to bond with but was met with either neglect or abuse, and it kills him to see john repeat lyle's mistake.
(bonus if you consider the parallel between jack bonding with cain and arthur's dog, copper)

I have this headcanon that because both Abigail and John were first time parents, Arthur stepped up and showed them the basics. Abigail would be impressed and question if he had experience with babies. Arthur would then fall quiet and probably change the subject. John would see how well Arthur is with his baby that he feels even more pressure and doubt about being a dad (also with the nagging possibility that he may not be the actual father of Jack).

Does anyone ever think about the symbolism of Isaac’s name? We can assume it’s biblical, the story of Abraham and Isaac. But in the end, Arthur did end up sacrificing his son to prove his loyalty, not to god but to the gang. He sacrificed time, stability, and at the end of the day, his life—when trouble came around and there was no one there able to protect him. All for a man who would betray him in the end.

In 2017, American film researchers recovered “Something Good – Negro Kiss,” a short film depicting a playful kiss between a Black couple which had not seen the light of day for more than a century. A long-forgotten artifact from the earliest years of American film, the sweet, humanizing vignette, produced by the Selig Polyscope Company, makes a startling contrast to the overwhelmingly racist and blackface-ridden contempory portrayals of African Americans. Four years later in 2021, archivists in Norway, halfway across the world, identified a sister short in their collections—an extended alternate cut which reveals more of Chicago stage performers Gertie Brown and Saint Suttle’s vaudeville-like routine, a theatrical, hot-and-cold romantic dynamic between two lovers which parodies the popular and controversial short “The Kiss” (1896). Both films, which had previously been lost, were known from entries in old motion picture catalogs but had been assumed to be era-typical, anti-Black “race films” until their rediscovery in the 21st century. Together with its more famous sibling, which has since been inducted into the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry, this alternate version of “Something Good” represents the first-known instance of Black intimacy ever captured on-screen.
SOMETHING GOOD [Alternate Version] (1898) Directed by William Selig
