a white-faced scops owl, I think, that flew into a window in our schoolin Malawi (Mtunthama, 1985) and spent a slightly dazed morning with me. Then with much flashing of eyes, clicking of beak and ferocious attitude, it took its leave and flew off, I hope, to a long and food-filled life in the bush

A creep of amphibians and a couple of isnects as I sift through old images. These are all from 1982 -1985 and are scans taken from transparencies and are so full of memories!

Nyau dancers in Malawi, 1984. The Nyau are a society of masked dancers, one of the oldest aspects of Chewa culture. They dance Gule wa mKlulu, the Great dance, and masks can embody everything from the monkey who steals the crops to ancestral presences, social processes and the changing world (some big, straw bodied figures now represent aeroplanes and cars)
