Finally finished this piece after months of reworking. Far from perfect, but I’m glad it’s done. Inspired by the amazing Bruno Redondo, Dan Mora, and especially Dexter Soy.

Heat Nests
Written for @omegadickweek 2025
Masterlist
Before:
Jason knows it's a bad idea, even as he pushes the door open. He knows and yet he does it anyway because he doesn't have it in him to ignore the truly miserable scent coming from the room.
He takes a step over the threshold and ice blue eyes immediately lock onto him, even through the heat clouding them. A warning growl starts, low and dangerous, clearly reading go away, I bite . But Jason stays where he is, even though the growl makes him flinch slightly and his own scent floods with not a threat, please don't hurt me . Jason sees the exact moment the scent of distressed pup hits Dick because his eyes blow wide and the growl suddenly cuts out.
There are several long moments where they just stare at each other; Jason in the still open doorway and Dick peeking out over the edge of his nest, before Dick lets out a very rough sounding chuff.
Jason jolts forward almost automatically, it's a sound he hasn't heard since his mom died and he's powerless to ignore it. The door shuts again behind him as Dick reaches out a hand and then pulls him into the nest once he's close enough. Jason lets himself be bundled up in the spare blankets as Dick drags his chin over his curls to scent him. Dick's scent eases slightly as he does so, the miserable scent mellowing into something more neutral.
"What're you doing in here, little wing?" Dick mumbles as he starts running his fingers gently through the tangles in Jason's hair. "I thought Bruce told you to stay away this week."

That someone so brilliant can be so dense amazes him. Dick isn't sure what to make of it, frankly.
It's not like Jason is the oblivious type; he's keenly observant, unerringly sharp. The sensitive sort that picks up on everything out of habit and who notices the smallest tells on instinct. A learned skill set from before Robin, honed over the years into something devastating.
Dick doesn't doubt Jason's knack for reading people and knowing their intentions. They've always been on par with each other in this even if they use their talents differently.
Which is why Dick is at a loss.
There's nothing subtle to how he flirts with Jason, yet somehow all his advances go right over that pretty little head. Jason's blissfully unaware, unaffected even when Dick's efforts make everyone around them swoon.
What's wild about the whole thing isn't even that Dick and his active efforts are so woefully overlooked - it's that Dick knows Jason is interested.
He knows it in the way Jason gets fidgety and flushed when chance puts them near each other. He knows it for how bashful Jason gets whenever Dick drops an endearment instead of his name. He knows it because Jason likes to watch him and bristles when he's caught, cheeks pink and scowl vicious to hide his sulk-panic-bashful flustering.
Jason has a crush on him.
Jason doesn't even consider that Dick might have a crush on him back.
Which is ultimately the crux of the problem and Dick doesn't know what to do about it. Worse than being friend-zoned, Dick seems to have been written off entirely as being unattainable.
To make a unilateral decision of that magnitude like that on Dick's behalf? What crap. Jason sucks.
Dick likes him anyway. The punk is lucky Dick is so smitten.
That Jason can't pick up on how clearly enamored Dick is with him is an issue for another time though because there's an Alley case Dick painstakingly built to earn Jason's favor that he needs to review with the brat now.
There's nothing to indicate that Dick is off in any way. Irritated and put out as he feels, Dick has always been good with regulating his emotions; compartmentalizing and putting on an act for his own convenience. That besides, he's a professional and the Alley case is actually important, so. Dick deals.
And it's while Dick is doing an immaculate job of being fine that Jason calls him out for being 'not okay'. Aware of Dick in this singular instance while Dick is actively trying to fool him.
Amazing.
Dick doesn't even know how to respond. He's baffled, but all that shows in his expression is a petty sort of disdain because how the fuck did Jason notice this and not all of Dick's efforts in wooing him?
So he says, point blank: 'That's because I'm not [okay].'
Which Jason is startled at because Dick is never honest, so that must mean this is serious so Jason locks in. Ready to help. Ready to throw down.
Dick proceeding to tell Jason his tale of woe about this guy that's too dense to notice Dick is really interested in him. How Dick has been flirting with him for months and it's just not clicking.
And Jason gets a little sad, a lot jealous, and real petty because of that because he immediately (internally) goes in on this unnamed bastard, bristling because this idiot is living his dream and doesn't even know it?
But Dick is coming to Jason for advice so Jason plays it cool and tries to be genuinely supportive when he suggests, 'Just ask him out. Point blank.'
So, naturally, Dick looks right at Jason and says: 'Will you go out with me?'
Which, yeah. Like that.
The denseness strikes again, but Dick persists: 'I'm asking you out, Jason.'
And, oh.
The blush is immediate. Even when Jason tries to fight it back, play it off, it's soft and charming and sweet. He's cute. Dick likes him so damn much, it's stupid.

Both Dick and Jason should be more skilled than Bruce and be able to win a fight against him. I will die on this hill
Dick canonicly won against Bruce several times already and most writers do say that Nightwing is surpassed Batman, at this point. It's mostly Batman glazers who have the most problem with accepting that fact
Jason had a clear upper hand over Bruce in Under the Red Hood when he first returned to Gotham and his training surpassed Bruce's training, with Jason winning against the best of the world as well as some former Bruce's teachers. It's only later on when writers started nerfing Jason hard to glaze Batman (and because DC don't like Jason, lets be honest here)
I can't tell who should realisticly win their fight against eachother but they definitly should be better than their father
