It's probably me again finding meaning where there isn't any (as always), but can we talk about the scene where Darius and Kenji enter Brooklynn's secret appartment and how it perfectly encapsulates each of their relationships with her?

Darius enters the appartment and he immediately goes into investigation mode, attempting to call Sammy then searching through Brooklynn's stuff to inquire about what she was doing. At no moment does he display any sort of emotion at being at her place, at the fact that she's not here anymore. In that he's very similar to Brooklynn (their interest in solving misteries being stronger than anything), so much so that you could argue that they are the two faces of the same coin with how similar their personnalities are, which is exactly why (according to me) they could never work as a couple. Sometimes the right partner for you is someone who resembles you, but there are times when, on the contrary, such a person would be the worst partner and I believe Darius and Brooklynn to belong to the second category. But that's below the point, what we can observe in that scene is that Darius' strong feelings about Brooklynn and her death don't manifest at all, which to me only further reinforces my theory according to which Darius' strong reaction to Brooklynn's death was mostly motivated by the crippling guilt he felt about his involvment in her death and not by his momentary crush on her. Here, he isn't swept by an overflow of emotions of sorrow and loss, no, because his main drive, his main motivation is and always was to try and make peace with what had happened that night more than anything else. So it's only to be expected that the prospect of finally finding answers, of finally getting to know why she died if not because of him, overpowers everything else in that moment, even Brooklynn as an individual and his friend.

Then there's Kenji. Immediately after entering, he is hit by everything that reminds him of Brooklynn in that place he has never even visited. First it's the helmets on the wall, especially the one with pink strikes, because that's something Brooklynn would always carry with her, and he knew that better than anyone else. It's the first familiar object he finds in that foreign place, the first thing that reminds him of her. He spends a long time looking at it, incapable of focusing on their actual mission, or care for it, unlike Darius. After a while he starts advancing into the room, touching the dust on the table and remarking how cold the appartment is, visibly shaken. Because these details only serve to remind him that Brooklynn's not here anymore, and hasn't been for a long time, because she died. And then the shoe. He stumbles on it, picks it up, and with a sad smile thinks back on all the times he'd stumbled on it when they were together. It's a little detail he found annoying at the time, like there are in any couple. He would give anything for it to happen again now that he lost her forever, as shown by his sad, endeared smile. And this scene hits differently after you realize that it was only there because Brooklynn kicked the shoe when she was mad that he broke up with her. I think this whole sequence is so touching and sad. It's the first time we see how much he misses her, how much he misses the little things she added to his daily life. They're supposed to be investigating the dino smuggling but his feelings about Brooklynn are too strong and he completely looses focus. Because while he loved and admired Brooklynn as a person, what he loved more than anything was being with her, the relationship they had, and it was something only the two of them shared, a gap only Brooklynn could fill.

I find the difference between the two striking. This isn't to say that Darius doesn't care about Brooklynn, he does, but it's different from the way Kenji cares about her. Darius loved and admired Brooklynn's personnality, she was amazing after all... But Kenji loved her, loved being with her, loved what they had built. And that scene, to me, perfectly showcases that.

Zanya and Darius' relationship was my favorite thing because its so clear Darius saw himself on her — especially on the boat scene — and I just cant deal with this kind of dynamic, it breaks me.

He just want to protect her from going through the same he did, but ofc she as a teenager doesnt understand that and think he is underestimate her (that scene she says he is braging when he is trying to entetairn her with dino fun facts). And also it doesnt help that he just doesnt know how to interact with her, and maybe with kids in general; I think its due to all that happened in the island, he had to grow up real fast (all of them had, but like, Darius was the youngest) so he doesnt really know how a 14 year old is suppose to behave, then ends up treating her how he would've treated himself, the way he talked to her seemed more suitable to a 11/12 yo than a 14 and I dont think it was only for comic purposes.

I need to talk about this moment because there's just so much to say.

This interaction is so heartbreaking, and I applaud the animators for what they were able to convey without the characters saying anything, using only their facial expressions.

Kenji looked at her arm and by the expression on his face you just know he's thinking about what she must have gone through, and most likely regretting not being there for her. He's heartbroken, not because she's missing an arm, but because he knows it means she has suffered. The way he looks down almost gives the impression that he is asking her what happened (remember that he had already seen her arm). There's the feeling of an unspoken dialogue between them.

As for Brooklynn, we just need to compare her reaction to the one she had with Ben. With Ben she reacted badly, almost agressively, asking him to stop looking at her like that. Ben was only concerned, but still the fact that his eyes kept coming back to her arm was enough to hurt her. While here, she doesn't get mad, she's scared. That's my interpretation, but I take it as she is scared he will look at her differently. They were lovers, I'm not going to dwelve too much into it, but Kenji was the one person who "knew" her body the best (sorry I can't think of another way to put it but you get the idea) so it's especially frightening for her. There's no hint of anger like with Ben, only sadness, fright and pain.

I didn't think it was possible, but I think Kenji will be even more depressed next season. And congratulations to the animation team because that whole scene is just a masterpiece. The way they managed to capture his heart breaking perfectly...

And I'm SO glad they didn't steal that moment from Kenji by giving it to Darius.

Spoiler Chaos Theory Season 2 episode 3

This right here is exactly why I think they wouldn't work and where Darius is wrong.

It was because he loved her that Kenji didn't understand.

What Brooklynn is doing isn't good for her (I mean, it has cost her her arm). She doesn't know when to stop to the point where she became self destructive. Darius puts her on a pedestal, to the point where he's willing to accept her putting her investigations above her life, but it's not love, and it's unhealthy. Kenji on the other hand loved her, and that's exactly why he didn't encourage her to continue. It hurt him, and herself, even if she didn't realize it. Brooklynn doesn't know when to stop, and it's her biggest flaw, one no one should blindly accept. Kenji was hurt exactly because he loved her and wanted to spend time with her, wanted the best for her. In the end I hope Brooklynn realizes next season that her life has as much (more) value as her investigations and that she understands Kenji. Her getting with Darius would be character regression at that point, because it would validate what she has done.

Ok, but some of the discourse happening under dreamworks latest instagram post (brooklynn's notes) really bugs me. Some of you really seem to think that just because Darius is in love with Brook and is her best friend she should reciprocate his feelings (aka nice guy syndome). I enjoy Dinostar, don't get me wrong (I prefer Kenlynn but I do like them), but Brooklynn doesn't owe sh*t to Darius 😭 Like, is she just supposed to get over her first boyfriend who she was in a relationship with for six years just because Darius fell in love with her? Hell no 😭 I actually like the fact that she rejected him (I hope they won't backtrack on that), it's refreshing and more interesting storywise and I hope it'll teach some people that just because you're nice to a girl doesn't mean you're entitled to her love.
