I really have to give Naoko props for creating Chibiusa and coming up with a complex plotline for her due to the fact that Osa- P was like" Oh You have to give Usagi a kid now." Which was something she wasn't thinking about doing since she was going to end the series at one arc.
And the way Chibiusa falls out the sky..
I can believe it. She was thinking on the fly.
That's why Black Moon Arc is the way it is. lol
But Black Moon Arc to me doesn't get the full love it deserves because if you really think about it, especially towards the end of the arc, she was really getting ready for Infinity Arc
She was already in her H. G. Wells bag so why not skip over to Mary Shelley and Lovecraft.
Sailor Moon is pretty much
Astronomy
Astrology
Fairy Tales
Shakespeare
Greek/Roman Mythology
Dystopia/Utopia
Fantasy
Sci-Fi
Gothic
Chemistry
Mineralogy
Horror ( a dash)
Romance
Fashion
Magic
Rolled up to make one of the most well known and beloved Manga/Anime to Magical Girl.
But people have the nerve to call Naoko irrelevant..

I'm sorry to concede that it's true, Sailor Moon S is VASTLY OVERRATED and it's my favorite one in the anime series. One can argue it's the beginning of the decline of Sailor Moon. It greatly deviates from the source material, the other girls get no power ups being stuck in their Star Power henshin and attacks, Chibi-Usa gets no Super form, and it continues the trope of finding whatever thingmajig in people's bodies that would continue into the next two seasons and the Guardians FUCKING useless.
It's really is overrated and I have been saying this for so long.
Some people say it's peak (which to me in the manga it is because Naoko was in her bag with this season), while I actually with you and say that it's decline of Sailor Moon for the 90's anime.
Because honestly if Haruka and Mic wasn't in it this season it wouldn't hold up well to be honest.
Because Usagi, Har, Mic and I'm going to say Mamo is carrying this season on their damn back so far with me being 19 episodes in.
Because if you take those four out along with Saturn and Pluto only thing you would have is Rei, Mina, Ami and Mako and think the Death Busters would have won if it was just those four..
Rei, Mina, and Ami aint doing shit but bullying Usagi while Mako is doing 1% . She only gets 1% because she did defeat a Diamon by herself. They are so damn weak and Usagi is pretty much doing everything by herself if Har/Mic or Mamo is not helping her.
They are letting Chibiusa be useless, a gotdamn joke and having her running around looking for a friend when that friend that is very important to the plot haven't showed up yet... Only thing she gets is damn barrettes from her Super Form but she doesn't even get her Super Form. ( I'm heading to that episode soon yall! lol)
I'm telling like it is because they did Hotaru/Saturn fucking wrong in this season because all she was a plot device. Hyping her up and only thing she did was throw fireworks at P90..
And P90...Poor Dude didn't have no speaking lines... Just a fucking moaning blob.
They say Mamo is useless but damn he was her only line of defense for two episodes and he dueled a Diamon and Kaionite with his damn cane. At least he's doing something in battles to help her out.
Rei had that dream about the world being destroyed two damn times and haven't told no one yet and we are now halfway into the season.
We only know how the tailsmans look like becasue Eudial was smart to ask Tomoe " Oh Hey Since I'm looking for these things, What the fuck do they look like?"
Har/Mic been running around Tokyo trying to find these damn things but playing blues clues with them and playing Civil War: Senshi Edition with the Inner Senshi. While Harkua is flirting with all the girls but Ami...
The inner senshi haven't done any homework in trying to find out how they look like, what they do, and why Har/Mic and the Death Busters want them. Or even trying to find out was they artifacts/ relics of the SliMil. They haven't even try to find out was there any other Senshi in the past that they didn't know about.
Well they are barely doing regular homework which they supposed to be doing since they are getting ready for High School Entrance Exam but I digress
And Setsuna..
Lord they going to do Pluto so damn dirty.. I can't wait until I get to that episode!
They are wildin with the fan service this season with these designs of the Diamon and then this shot right here..
That's why her nickname is T.A.P. Might was well have her ass naked.. ( I haven't gotten to Har bare butt shot and T.A.P fully nude shot yet.)
This season is the reason why my Icon is this pic
It just put all my feelings about this season into words "I'm so sick of this bullshit." lmao
I can't wait until we speed running the plot in the last few episodes!!
So yes this S season is overrated as hell.

That scene were the girls comfort Usagi in her time of need in Crystal depicts their friendship better than the entirety of the old series. In the '90s anime, aside from the first two seasons with MAJOR exceptions and the R movie, it seems like the girls really don't want to be in the same room with Usagi and only support her because she's the princess and Usagi supports them because they're her guardians. It's quite apparent what detractors define as "friendship" is really....
having Usagi being the butt of jokes and scrutinized by the girls for her weight, her grades, her study habits, her worth as a partner/girlfriend to Mamoru, and her leadership skills. There was always a certain mean-spiritedness to it. The fact that many consider the '90s anime the pinnacle depiction of friendship says a lot about the fandom, IMHO. They really believe numerous episodes of the girls and Luna lampooning/ridiculing Usagi constitutes as "friendship".
I will say this over and over again until I'm blue in the face.
Usagi and the inner senshi relationship in the 90′s anime feels like employees who have to put up with their boss who they constantly feel like they are incompetent. But instead of keeping those comments to their self ,they say it in those comments in the boss face. Which they act like they can do a better job than the boss. Instead of giving constructive criticism in order for their boss to be better they bash their boss with ever chance they get. Due to the fact that boss have low self-esteem ,she puts up with it instead firing their asses and telling them to go fuck themselves. In which she will do the job herself like she been doing anyway since they always show up late and don’t do shit.
Like Usagi wasn’t what they signed up for when they agree to reawaken as Senshi but remember Serenity and being her protectors.
It's like ( I'm taking this a little bit from Blackmanta who did this well)
Senshi and Luna For the Majority of the Season: Usagi you can't do nothing right! Stop being a lazy crybaby! You need to stop eating, sleeping, reading manga and focus on your grades which are sooo bad and study! You are never going to get in high school if you keep acting like that! Mamoru should be embarrassed of you and shouldn't want to marry you if you don't pull your weight! No wonder he dumped you for a while! You need to be more mature to be worthy of him. You are not pretty enough to be with him either. You are such a slacker when it comes to the enemy! You are not leadership material at all Usagi. You need to be focusing on the enemy and not whining over Mamoru or because Chibiusa ate the last piece of pie. You need to be more nicer to Chibiusa because she is a long way from her parents and needs love! You are going to be big as a whale if you keep eating all these sweets. You are such an idiot. Why is Mamo with you again? You are not " pure" if you got Seiya in your house knowing that you supposed to be with Mamoru!
The last few episodes aka big bad:
SHE'S OUR BESTEST BEST FRIEND!!
SHE IS SOOOOO PRECIOUS TO US!
SHE'S OUR PRECIOUS FRIEND!!
SHE'S IS THE GLUE THAT HOLD US TOGETHER!
SHE'S DONE MORE FOR US THAN ANYONE!
WE CAN'T DO NOTHING WITHOUT HER!! ( cough which is the truth cough)
IF YOU USE THE SILVER CRYSTAL YOU'LL DIE SAILOR MOON!!!
WE CAN'T LOSE HER!!!
WE WAS ALONE BEFORE HER!
WE NEED YOU USAGI!
WE ARE NOTHING WTHOUT YOU!!
WE LOVE YOU USAGI!!
What kind of bullshit is this?
You spent majority of the season talking about her ass like a dog ( especially Rei and Luna with sometimes Ami say some cold shit) then when it comes to last few episodes when she saving everyone ass then want to kiss her ass and act like you love her. I remember someone on reddit said that Mamoru only act like he love her when she is dying. Which to me the 90's Senshi act like this.
( Cough But for some reason people want to say the manga/crystal senshi is kissing her ass because they are nice to her and appreciates what the fuck she does for them... Since she feels like she is returning the favor since they protect her so she's going to protect them. cough )
But everyone want to say the Manga and Crystal have this type of realtionship where the Senshi are just servants/ protectors to their " princess" and it's no real friendship. Which they aways bring up Dream Arc where their collective dream was to protect her and her prince, the earth AND each other.
People keep forgetting the each other part so bad.
In which Usagi said the extract something is the fact that she want to protect the earth with Mamo AND protect her friends.
Her Friends aka Sailor Sesnhi aka her Sisters
Which for some reason just because we don't see it people think they don't live their individual dreams or find love ( if they want to) because they are " slaves" aka bound to Usagi and only Usagi is able to found happiness.. ( Even tho her dream before the collective dream was to be married, have 2.5 children, and live in a house with a picket fence not a Crystal Place protecting people and earth. People forget that .)
Which if you read the damn manga which you should know Usagi fucking character, that's not going to fucking happen.
She would want to live out their dreams and be their biggest cheerleader doing it.

S is the most overrated season of the 90's anime. Period.
I did this before but lets look up the word Overrated.
-rated or valued too highly.
Something is considered overrated when it's regarded as more important or better than it actually is, often due to hype or societal expectations. It's a subjective judgment, and what one person finds overrated, another might not.
This is the reason why I say that it is overrated.
The way a nice piece of the fandom acts about that season. ( If that your fave season that's fine. Nothing wrong with that. We all got our faves.)
They act like it's untouchable .
That no other season can touch that season that come before or after it.
To the point that I feel like SuperS gets so much unnecessary hate because it comes after that season.
When in all honestly S is really the beginning of Sailor Moon downfall.
It is the beginning of the Senshi going from useful to being useless in every regard ( from being a supportive friend to a Sailor Senshi) .
To them literally forgetting about the Silver Crystal and them going with their own plot point that they created in the Dark Kingdom arc.
Like the Rainbow Crystal Arc was genius but they literally went copy and paste with it in S ( Pure Heart Crystals) SuperS ( Dream Mirror) and StarS ( Stars Seeds)
But people want to say that the Manga copy and paste...
Then I also notice how so many people are like " Well S gets super dark! That's the reason why it's so great."
Like I'm not going to take anything away from S being dark because it is ( really it is) but the other seasons before and after that was not?
Sailor Moon Classic- People got stabbed ( Nephrite and Mamo) blasted ( Zoisite), found out the whole Main Cast are reincarnated from an ancient civilization that got destroyed, the main character watch her four "friends" die, had to battle to save the guy she hated but actually liked from the woman who tried to kill her thousands of years ago, save him and watch him die AGAIN to save her, then battle the woman and dies but have a wish to be a normal girl thus rewrite the timeline and everyone comes back with no memories.
R- A little girl comes from the future after her home was destroyed trying the find the one thing that will save her parents and home after she thought it was her fault that her home was destroyed. She's getting chased by a group of people that is responsible for her home being destroyed. The Main Character gets her heart broken by the guy she loves that she doesn't know that is having visions and dreams of her getting killed like she did in the past. Find out the little girl is actually the Main Character and her love interest child and the Main Character is Queen in the future. The Main character gets kidnapped and almost SAed by a character that is totally obsessed with the future version of herself. That little girl gets corrupted into a villain by the main villain by telling her that no cares about her and she is not loved. The little girl who now a corrupted woman almost killed her parent past selfs. A woman got turned into a dragon and then got killed because of her jealousy for a guy who wasn't worth. A guy got left in a burning space ship to die. Another woman almost committed suicide becasue she realized the guy she fighting for didn't love her. People got blasted to death by the main villain. ( Yall fucking sleep on R so bad. The Manga, Crystal, and 90's anime this season is wild. R is that girl for real. lol )
I could do the other two but I'm getting tired lol

Wikipedia and wikimoon is sitting right there.
So it's a post on reddit where the op ask who is your most hated villain and this is one of the threads.
The op proceeds to tell the person who said that Tomoe is their most hate villain " Oh Hey You must haven't finish watching season 3 so this what actually happened."
Which I stepped in and was like " He is probably talking about manga and crystal" which he was.
Which the OP was like " oh I didn't read or watch Manga or Crystal."
This is the reason why I and others have been saying for the past 11 years since crystal came out
" Read the manga. '"
" Drip your toes in other versions besides the 90's anime."
You are having a discussion like this where other versions not just the 90's anime will come into play, you are trying to school someone with knowledge but end up being schooled yourself.
We are not saying you have to like or fully watched or read every version of SM but with a franchise that have so many versions of it which are being discussed in community level like reddit, SM forums, discord , twitter and FB, it's good know something about each of the big 3 ( Manga, 90's Anime, Crystal) since they are the most accessible.
Knowing PGSM and Sere Myu is a plus since they are least accessible ( as of right now but could change with the success of new musicals over the years , the success of Sailor moon Live recently and PGSM being reaired in Japan)
Knowledge is Power.

Ami using her little supercomputer to find the Pure Heart in this ep and never again is a good example of why this season is ass to me. Y'all got these items/abilities/knowledge from previous seasons that would logically be useful in this situation, but you don't use any of them and instead keep the "plot" going with needless drama. But the 90s anime is the best version and S is the best season...
And that's why I bought it up last night when she used it.
We are five episodes into the season and it's the first time she used it this season which she only used it for a gps system to find the pure heart crystal. Which yes is a cool feature but what else she could gave used it for?
To find out the Diamon weakness so it make it easier for them to attack those points to weaken it so Usagi doesn't have to do that much. ?
To find out out what is blocking Usagi from transforming aka run a diagnostic on the Silver Crystal.
Maybe some how hack into the Moon Kingdom databases via using the crown command center ( which the 90's anime also forgot) and found out was it other senshi besides them in the SliMil because clearly they don't remember them. Which is ok since we know they are the outers and didn't travel to the Moon Kingdom that much.
Since the Senshi mention the talisman, break into the Moon Kingdom databases again and see what can you find. To see if they are artifacts just like the Silver Crystal.
Run a diagnostic on the Pure Heart Crystal before putting back in the person to figure out it's characteristics.
Ami supposed to be the brains of the group but they don't have her to do stuff to actually "be the brains". Even tho she has a freaking mini MacBook in her palm of her hand with the technology that is way beyond the technology they had in the 90's. All the stuff I mentioned would have been her being the brains to figure out what's going on.
But hey have her say " We got exams to study for!!" 50 million times instead of her using her brains to figure out the new villain, the new senshi ,and what the new senshi is looking for.

Does 90s anime really have more character development than manga? With Mamoru and Inners being weakened and reduced to plot devices in later seasons? Chibiusa never proving herself as Sailor Moon's successor she was supposed to be? Haruka and Michiru staying assholes with superiority complex? Setsuna and Hotaru, who were supposed to be a powerful senshi, straight up ignored? Usagi had some growth but she still started and ended the series with "I don't want to fight!" mindset.
That’s what I have been trying to wrap my head around for the longest because what is character development in the 90′s anime?
People have said over and over again “ Oh they get more character development in the 90′s anime than in the manga” but do they really?
Character Development is not just learning about that character and what makes that character tick but does that character grow and learn certain things about themselves.
To me it’s like
This Character Started at one point in the beginning of the show.
Is that person at the same point or the experiences that had during the course of the show changed them and they are at a different point?
If a character is at that same point and doing the same things they did at the start of the show that’s not character development.
I use this definition to defined what Character Development is
Character development describes both how characters grow and change over the course of the novel and the approaches to how the author makes this happen. In other words, the term describes both the conscious effort of the writer and the effect that effort has on the novel or story.
So to me Character Development and Character Growth works hand and hand.
Some people see it as two different things like this
Character development is the process of revealing information about a character to the audience through the story. It’s not “development” in terms of change over time, but rather “development” in terms of defining who that character is.
Character growth refers to the characters within a story changing over time as a result of the experiences they have. When their values, interests, allegiances, or personalities shift from one part of a story to the next, particularly when information that we would have taken for granted as part of character development is changed right before the audience’s eyes, that’s an instance of
But I see it as
Character Development is your foundation aka your concrete slab. You need that in order to built your house
Character Growth is your frame. You built that up after you get your foundation.
You need both in order to build a house.
I can know person dream and fave colors all day but that don’t mean shit if they don’t grow towards that goal.
That it’s one episode where they learn a lesson and then the next it was forgotten.
What do they do when they face adversity? Do they learn from that experience and grow into a better person?
Can you really put that towards the 90′s anime?
Because yes you know about these characters but does the characters grow?
Yeah Sure We learned that Rei wants to be an idol , can ski when she was a child she had firebird necklace, and cares about others even tho she doesn’t show it but still say some mean shit to Usagi and becomes the hothead bitch
Yeah We learned that Ami can write songs, play chess wants to be a doctor and is a genius but still didn’t fully break out her shy shell and becomes just the smart one.
Sure We learned about Mako loves to cook, sew and is a hopeless romantic w but she till thinks every dude that pass by looks like her ex-boyfriend and just becomes the muscle of the group.
We learned that Mina wants to be an idol and starts off being the vet of the group with the most experience and the most on her shoulders but she still is an opportunist and is a groupie of the group.
We learned that Usagi is a crybaby , likes to eat, read manga and draw manga , wears her heart on her sleeve, but she still never grow out of her jealousy, insecurities, childiness and the fact she never grew into the role of Sailor Moon. ( I talked about that a few days back.)
So I’m trying to see how they fleshed out their personalities because
Rei- The Bitch
Ami- The Smart One
Mako- The Tomboy
Mina- The opportunist
Which they are pretty much known for the whole series unless an episode decides to tell us something that we learn about them from one episode and never be bought up again.
Example: Ami knowing how to work on cars..
So yes you learned about these characters but the narrative does nothing to really truly grow them .
Which is like you had so much time to do so. It's a difference between a 60 act manga and a 200 episode anime. Even with PGSM you 50 episodes and you learned about these characters but they also grew.
I have used this over and over again but look at this from the start and end of the series
Beginning of the Series
Rei- A aloof girl who people thinks is crazy cause she got physic powers but just lonely. Is mean towards Usagi and a little boy crazy. ( helpful)
Ami- Being so in tuned with her studies that shes’ not in tuned with the world but feels lonely and wants friends. ( helpful)
Mako- Love baking, other girly things while being so strong and almost tomboy like that people are afraid of her. (Thinking that one dude she come across looks like her old boyfriend.) ( helpful)
Mina- A good leader and friend but also a opportunist cause she wants to become famous even tho she already is.( helpful)
Usagi- Lazy, crybaby, clumsy, and have low esteem but with a good heart and protect the world by never giving up and destroying villains. Goes from doesn’t want to fight but wants to fight in order to protect her family, friends and the world. ( learning how to pull her weight)
End of the Series
Rei- A total bitch towards Usagi that sometimes have her moments where she try to be a good friend where the plots permits it , boy crazy and a opportunist. ( Useless)
Ami- Being so in tuned with her studies while acting like she while saying some very cruel remarks towards Usagi about her studies habits and thinking she’s not pure when Seiya comes over to her house. . ( Useless)
Mako- Thinking every dude she come across looks like her old boyfriend. ( Useless)
Mina- A groupie who will do anything to become famous. Even make sure the tabloids have her hooking up with all 3 starlights. dumb blonde #2 ( Useless)
Usagi- Lazy, crybaby, jealous, clumsy, childish, obsessive over her boyfriend and have low esteem who thinks she still not good enough for her boyfriend , future daughter, or friends.. Goes from wanting to fight to giving villains magical redos which they don’t deserve cause they try to destroy the world and her. ( Only person in a group project who does the work)
You got to have growth.
You got to change your character.
You can not have your character stay in a box for a whole series and in this case 200 episodes. Also you can't have your character slide backwards and be actually worse than they were when they started.
Also with the 90's anime I notice that a lot of the girls backstory that was actually in the Manga that actually does constitutes as character development for them is actually not in the 90's anime.
They never talked about Rei estrangement with her father which is the reason why she lives with her dad since her mom died that was talked about in Casablanca Memory. Also the fact that she is also good in archery.
They never talked about Mako losing her parents in a plane cash which the reason why she doesn't like the sound of planes taking off which was talked about in The Melancholy of Makoto. Also the fact that she does taking care of plants that was bought up in Infinity arc.
Yes they do talk about Ami parents divorce but the only becasue they adapt Ami first love which is the only short story they adapted. But they didn't fully talk about the extent that divorce does to her cause she barely sees her dad since she live with her mom.
Mina has a whole 16 act two volume manga about her in which they freaking changed her backstory even dealing with her Sailor V days and how she really don't get along with her mom as well.
And Poor Mamo
Mamo is just literary his backstory and nothing else in the 90's anime. With Mamo they honestly kept him complacent.
In which you never have him question his purpose of him wanting to do more for Usagi but just have him in this box.
Like he was just ok throwing roses, saying speeches, having a cane to fight for a second, and then get hurt, almost killed or kidnapped.
It was like he was ok being a dude in distress. Like it he doesn’t have this sense of wanting to do more and want to be more helpful to her. He just ok where he is at which to be is not realistic.
Then with Chibiusa like you said. She didn't grow into a role as Sailor Mini Moon and her becoming a senshi that would be ready to take the Mantle of Sailor Moon if she wants it. I talked about it
So it's like people go on and on about learned the character but that character doesn't really grow compared to the manga.
I feel like no one is the same person they were in the begging of the manga as they are at the end.
Yes Usagi got the most growth because she's the main character so of course. She's no where near the same person she was at the beginning.
You can really test this by looking at the Dark Kingdom arc and the StarS arc and how if you really look at it both arcs are really the same in the terms of you have a person who takes everything that Usagi loves away from her and how she reacts.
Cause let me ask this
Did Usagi try to stab herself after she saw that Mamo and the girls star crystals was taken away from them and they were pretty much reanimated corpses fighting against her?
Did she?
No
She kept fighting. She didn't give up in her grieve.
To me that's a great way to test growth if you put a person in a similar situation and see how they would react.
If they act the same way they did it's not grow cause they didn't learn if the mistakes they made.
If they act differently than did before that mean they learn and grew from that previous experiences.
Also I see a lot people say " Oh Just her character traits went away" when people talk about Usagi Maturity.
See I disagree with this.
Usagi still cries but she cries over seeing a beautiful soul thinking they are not good enough not over a getting a small cut.
She grew out of her jealousy and insecurities as the story grows because she realize them.
But everyone including Hotaru and Setsuna got some development, growth and time to shrine because really.
Hotaru was just a plot device in the 90's anime with barely no importance after S. ( I can't wait until Eternal Movies get over here cause to see her and Chibiusa fishing together .. yes please)
They pretty much diminished Setsuna importance to Chibiusa and also her badness which I just talked about a few day back.
A lot of people don’t get that the character development in the 90s was like watching an educational show you watch on PBS with a “lesson” you learn each episode.
Like today’s episode you are going to learn about following your dreams.
Today’s lesson you are going to learn that bullying is not nice and it can hurt people..
Today’s lesson you are going to learn about following your heart to love.
Today’s lesson you are going to learn about teamwork and the power of friendship.
Today’s lesson you are going to learn to be considerate of other people feelings, learning to admit you are wrong and apologized.
Today’s lesson you learn about heartbreak and how you friends tell you that the boy you love have his reasons to break up with you and you should still trust him………
Which the next week they forget about that lesson and continue with the same shit they did before that lesson.. Until that lesson is taught again in the next season.
Which makes DiCs inclusion of “Sailor Says” at the end even more iconic since it was on during the wave of Barney… Cause they really did make it educational.
With the Manga ,they get that character development and it sticks. It doesn’t freaking disappear until another episode about that same topic comes in the next season..
So really everyone talks about they got Character Development in the 90's anime in which in truth that 's the only thing that got but no growth.
Which is like
YOU HAD 200 DAMN EPISODES TO GROW YOUR CHARACTERS AND NOT KEEP THEM ALL THE SAME AND IN SAME CASES WORST THEY WHEN THEY FIRST STARTED!!
Let's look at it this way
Ami can
1. Swim
2. Work on Cars
3. Work on Computer Programs
4. Write Lyrics to a Song
5. Really good in Math
6. Dance Well
7. Play Chess
8. Overall good in Academics
Mako can
1. Cook
2. Skate Well
3. Dance Well
4. Sew
Mina can
1. Scheme Well
2. Sing
3. Vollyball
Rei can
1. Sing
2. Insult Usagi
3. Write Songs
4. Ski
Usagi can
1. draw cute doodles that people talk about
2. Bring people together
So when people say “ Oh the 90′s anime give the girls more character development” is false.
The correct answer is
The 90′s anime give Ami more character development, meanwhile Mako,Mina and Rei got leftovers and Usagi got crumbs.
Cause this
This doesn’t make any sense.
I understand that she’s poplar in Japan because of she’s the Smart/ Studious Character but damn!
She’s borderline perfect.
But people criticized the manga for giving Usagi more development than the girls.
To compared to what she gets in the 90′s anime and she appears in all 200 episodes??
That's all.
