Now I'm intrigued, what would embrace Bhaal AU Devlin would be like? Would she still pair up with Astarion? How different would her personality be like?

Hello!! This is an interesting question and I've been pondering it for a while so sorry this is a kinda long post. Dark Urge spoilers ahead!

Devlin is someone who fundamentally craves adoration and attention. Part of that comes from her ego of being raised with a god complex…but another part comes from the genuine desire to connect with others after her traumatic and isolating experiences in Bhaal’s temple.

Just a little insight into her characterization - I was really inspired by how Eartha Kitt talked about her own relationship to the audience throughout her career. These are two quotes from Kitt:

“I have a great need for affection from an audience. I don't know whether this is because I had such a tough life when I was a child.” “I'm an orphan. But the public has adopted me and that has been my only family. The biggest family in the world is my fans.”

These quotes resonate with Devlin’s character.

Resist Devlin learns that to make relationships work, she must offer a piece of herself up. Humor is primarily how she does that. She leans into the role of a clown because she thrives on laughter. It takes effort, vulnerability, and frequent failure to earn a laugh. So choosing to Resist Bhaal gives Devlin access to genuine relationships through earned adoration. It’s the core of her relationship with Astarion. They fall in love because they make each other laugh!

On this path, she becomes more performative like a comedian or actor. Still a tad self absorbed...but in a charming way!

In an Embrace Bhaal path she would still have the desire for an audience. But a Bhaalist version of Devlin would not make any sacrifices for that audience. She would simply feel entitled to their attention. It’s the idea of a “captive audience” carried out to its extreme as she fully embraces her role as a cult leader. Why bother working for adoration when you can just take it by force?

Think Lord Farquaad from Shrek with his audience cue cards, except it’s Sceleritas holding the cards for Bhaalist Devlin!

Her relationship to Spawn Astarion could never survive her becoming an Embrace Dark Urge. She'd be rooted to the temple in Baldur’s Gate, whereas in my headcanon Spawn Astarion always leaves the city. He goes forth to celebrate his freedom. He'd pretty quickly breakup with a Bhaalist Durge!

Her and Ascended Astarion on the other hand would have a toxic on-again, off-again situation going for decades. Ascended Astarion starts out as being sexually forward but over time becomes more withdrawn due to all of his unresolved pain. Devlin meanwhile embraces her lusts. She’d go full monsterfucker hedonist and take all the lovers she wants - Astarion be damned!

They’d have a sort of Hera and Zues situation going for them. Except in this case, Devlin is Zues and Astarion is Hera. Devlin goes on to have copious amounts of sex and gets knocked up left and right, while Astarion pretends not to care but is secretly bitter and goes out of his way to plot against her offspring.

Oh…and on that topic, Bhaalist Devlin has SO many children. Some born of her body and others created Frankenstein style! That’s a key difference. Resist Devlin is (probably) skipping parenthood but Bhaalist Devlin? She's a baby bhaalspawn making factory.

So, in summary, Resist Bhaal Devlin craves the intimate laughter of loved ones, while Embrace Dark Urge Devlin wants the unending applause of a stadium. Both need an audience but one can be satiated and the other can not.

Not being able to draw my favorite character the way I envision them in my mind

The funniest part of romancing gale is knowing that mystra is most definitely watching your tav or Durge throwing it back on that man during his romance arc shenanigans. He’s actively doing magic during every romance scene, meaning that mystra is canonically duty bound to at least listen. Gale is essentially doing the fantasy equivalent of sending your ex a voice memo of you fucking your new partner in every romance scene. the scene channeling the weave? mystra’s there. astral projection glow in the dark fidget spinner bonefest? mystra’s there. the regular bed option? he summons the bed using magic, so mystra’s there too. scene where he takes you to the astral plane (aka mystra’s literal goddamn house)? mystra’s there. every time. she’s sitting in her little magical cuck chair in the corner watching her ex abuse victim boink his new (likely more age appropriate partner). and you know what? hell yeah. gale deserves a little bit of petty fuckery in his life. go off king
