How to run Touhou games on a Mac
I’m aware that there are a myriad of other tutorials out there that explain how to set up Touhou for a Mac, yet I’ve found that no single one of them provided all the answers I needed. There were various hiccups along the way that needed to be addressed and it involved a lot of jumping around from website to website to find all the solutions. This tutorial primarily deals with using Wine, which enables a user to run Windows programs on a Mac. There are other ways this can be achieved, such as using Boot Camp to install a secondary Windows OS on your system, or using Parallels to simultaneously run a separate OS on your system. However, I wanted to find a way to run the games on my Mac as natively as I could without the need to install a whole separate OS, and on top of that I had tried using Boot Camp once before and it didn’t work for me.
I’m in no way claiming that this tutorial will be the definitive, conclusive guide on how to accomplish this task. I will be describing the bare minimum of what was necessary for me to successfully run the games on my iMac and MacBook, excluding all technical details and intricacies mostly because it is beyond my capabilities to do so. I’m not very tech savvy, and if you’re not either then this guide may be of use to you.
These are the topics my tutorial will cover:
Downloading and installing the programs necessary to run Touhou
Getting save files and replays to actually work for Touhou 12.5 and onwards
How to patch the games in English
How to set up an external Joystick for Touhou on a Mac
How to set icons and shortcuts for the games
This tutorial will not detail anything beyond this, so I apologize if what you’re looking for is not here. You can find links to each part of the tutorial at the top of this page. Alternatively, here are links to each part:
