Karl (Lagerfeld, of course) was recently asked what he thought of babies at fashion shows. He replied, "If I were a baby it would be a dream to be at a fashion show. Why not?" He's right. Ever since I was a baby, it's always been a dream. And even after so many years, for better or worse, it's still a dream of mine. And you should never stop chasing your dreams. Damn the storms. Over five years ago, I lost my cousin, Maria, to domestic violence. And every year now (for the past two) I climb 86 flights of stairs in her honor to raise awareness. I think a lot about her and how long we've kept Maria's story a secret. What my family will tell you is her boyfriend finally strangled her with a television cord after years of abuse. But, the truth is, it was her brother who molested her, her mother who denied it, her father who called her a whore, her other brothers who abused her...humiliated her and all for abandonment. Maria was dying long before she met her murderer. And that 'domestic violence' is as much to blame as he is. Sadly, Maria is not the only woman I know who has been a victim. I have been, my mother, sisters and friends. The statistics are staggering and the worst part is the shame. The shame of saying 'I was abused.' The fear of saying I was drugged at a high school party and put in a small room with a mattress on the floor. Two boys came in, Doug Eagan and Ryan Kessel. I cannot say for certain what happened in that room because I was catatonic, but by Monday the rumor was I had given them both head. Either way I was raped or slandered or both. What I didn't know at the time, was the perpetrator ( Steve Murray who a year later committed suicide) of this act of violence against me had raped a girl in that same room, on that same mattress. Following this event, I fell into an abusive relationship for almost a decade. It took me 12 years to tell my sister that story and since then only a small few. But, I know now, I should not be ashamed and finally I'm not. I am not a victim, not anymore. #stopviolenceagainstwomen #shareyourstory #storybystory (at Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 2)
