Enoch ‘Nucky’ Johnson, the undisputed “boss” of the Republican political machine that controlled Atlantic City and the Atlantic County government from 1910 until his imprisonment in 1941. His organisation is also believed to have been involved in gambling, bootlegging and prostitution. 

Historian Nelson Johnson states ‘I don’t believe Nucky Johnson ever had anybody killed. He didn’t have to. He had so much power that if you didn’t play ball, he would just freeze you out’.
