I think it just comes down to interpretation and personal headcanons! Me and my writing partner have developed an extensive story with the Boys and Max plays a particular part in it, a not-very-good part, but that's mostly due to needs of the story.
Our take on Max comes from a couple of elements we picked up in the movie and toyed out into a larger characterization. The first comes from a small detail in the film - the missing children posters, notably, the younger ones. While the movie insinuates that it's mostly the Boys who are picking off people, and thanks to the establishing plot point of them killing the security guard the missing posters are supposed to indicate 'these people are actually being eaten by vampires', you'll note that the Boys don't pick off kids. They go for the young adults, maybe teenagers, who piss them off, who are in the wrong place at the wrong time, who start shit. People the world will, unfortunately, probably not miss.
So what's with all the missing kids posters, then? Just human crime in general? Well...
In the same scene where the Boys are cavorting about the video store, you'll note a little boy gets separated from his mother and is crying outside. In movies, I think it's important to not just consider what's being directly stated by the characters, but also not to just take in what's being directly shown on-screen. There's this bit of filmmaking technique (can't remember the name of, unfortunately!) where if you show the outside shot of a building, and then cut to an interior shot, the insinuation is that the interior shot is meant to take place in the building you were just shown. The point of the shot and juxtapositions like that in films is to make the audience associate something that's just shown in some way with something that's shown immediately next. There's a boy crying. We cut to Max watching from the video store.
Also this fact, that is never addressed in the movie: the Boys are eating the young, dumb, and drunk on the Boardwalk.
But what is Max eating.
Who is Max eating.
The second part of this argument for why we headcanon Max the way we do I will link here - an essay I've written about the Lost Boys and it's place as a queer film and its representation of vampires in the political and social climate of the 80s. The short of it being that Max represents straight, white, patriarchal society imposing its will onto marginalized groups, and how he doesn't care about their destruction as long as he ultimately gets what he wants out of the world.
We headcanon Max in the very dark light we do (and ours is a particularly dark light, might I specify, and it's not how most of fandom tends to see him!) because of these two interpretations, given the evidence the movie offers us.
Max is potentially killing and eating lost or runaway children, and Max as a villain represents the antagonistic forces of politics and culture at the time of the movie's making.
Canon is open for interpretation! Our take may not be your take, and that's good! It keeps fandom from turning into an echo chamber :>
I know I’ve definitely asked this before on my original blog, but I wanted to ask again.
Do you all think Max had a negative or bad relationship with the lost boys?
I recently rewatched the movie and I tried to pin point some times where it would indicate that the lost boys hated or disliked Max and I can’t find any??
I know the fandom traditionally views The Lost Boys as hating Max or thinking he is a creep, just trying to put two and two together I guess
Maybe the glare Dwayne gives him when they’re leaving the store? But that could be viewed as him just trying to be a tough guy in-front of his brothers…
The way I see it is they just like to riley up there dad, like any other sons would… they show up at his house roar their engines, throw the vampire flag in his face, they smirk when there told to leave the store, they tease Lucy in that deleted scene with the bikes which could be them trying to test their dad’s new girlfriend ( a typical thing children would do when a parent starts dating, maybe?)
The only slightly negative thing I can think of is how Max reacts when he finds out the boys are all dead. He comes off disinterested in my opinion. Which could have been an act, I guess?
Maybe I missed something?
It may be a hot take, but I kind of like to think of them going over to Max’s house once a week for “family dinner” because they do have a strong, yet dysfunctional family vibe, you know?
Maybe I will have to make a post about those family dinners lol 🤔
What are y’all’s thoughts?

joining the war on kids reading any book they want on the side of kids reading any book they want. simply you will be fine. it's even good to be confronted with things you don't understand and even find upsetting, uncomfortable and difficult. it's a surprise tool that will help you later.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but if the phrase "self care" doesn't resonate with you, try calling it "system maintenance" and see if that clicks.

i have zero empathy for little boys being misogynists. i was a kid too, but my focus was towards drawing and reading, not hating on minorities.
#if you do not stop them when they're little#they're going to grow up into men who do more than repeat what their older brothers/fathers/uncles/men they're watching on youtube#are saying

YouTube wants to introduce a tool that will discriminate against people with invisible disabilities, and it's all thanks to fucking Australia
People with ASD, ADHD and intellectual disabilities will be considered children (Because of their behaviors, I speak as a person with ASD), so YouTube will attack them with "Parental Care", thank you Australia for helping to take away the rights of people with disabilities under the pretext of "Protecting children"
It's disgusting that no one is talking about the consequences of this "Protecting Children from Content", you are disgusting, fuck you Australia
