Daleks say ACAB?

No. Daleks are cops.

And I’d written out a whole essay here about how the modern “supernatural invasion” genre was primarily established by a white English guy as a “What if the bad thing we did to other peoples happened to us?” scenario, but a lot of works in the genre like to ignore the “WE did the bad thing” component, resulting in a ton of very popular stories in which the protagonists (who are usually white, occasionally Will Smith) fight a nonexistent and heavily othered oppressor in order to restore the status quo. Then I went into the issue of villains being othered so much that their villainy can only be seen as opposed to the audience, regardless of what views the audience holds.

But if you really wanted to read about the racist undertones of standard scifi tropes in the context of the Daleks and Doctor Who, Jack Graham has already written about it much better than I could (CW: photo of blackface).

Basically, what I wanted to get at (which is barely related to your ask to begin with, sorry Anon...) is that it’s endlessly frustrating that despite the massive quantity of famous characters like the Daleks, and despite the broad understanding that these characters, when fictional, are villains, it takes so much real human pain for many people to even consider change.

But change is happening. Hopefully, for good.

Black lives matter. Abolish the police. Let’s make a kinder world.

This was from a few weeks ago now, but a week ago today my own grandma passed away. Because of the outbreak, I won’t be able to go to her funeral. I am doing well and I’m strangely happy, because she died peacefully and did good by so many people, but looking at this picture now it kind of has a different poignancy to it.
