Lily (squinting): Is it working?

Marlene: Do you have any secrets you’re keeping?

Sirius (red faced and breathing hard): N-no

Sirius (sobbing): Last year Lily called me stupid so I slipped eye of newt in her potion so it exploded in her face! I have a severe distrust of authority and I’m extremely claustrophobic to the point where Regulus locked me in a closet one time and I accidentally set it on fire to escape and then a year later I snuck into the Slytherin dorms and rubbed hot sauce inside his underwear so he’d get a burn and everyone would think he had an STD-

Lily (horrified): Sirius you can stop now, it works-

Sirius (sobbing): I used James’ razor that he uses to shave his face on my body one time because he tripped me and I didn’t tell him! Sometimes when I’m bored, I’ll go the muggle section of the library and look up muggle laws and see which ones I can break. I’m currently wanted for tax evasion in France.

Lily (horrified): Okay we’re done here-

Remus (walking in): What‘s happening?

Sirius (crying): What the fuck is a tax? I am the ghost you see when hugging your wife, or taking care of your child. I am the memory you wonder about. Would I have been better for you? Would you be happier now, if we had never ended? You love your son, you love your wife, you do. But you loved me too. And maybe you still do, I won’t decide that for you.

But I am a part of you, whether you like it or not. I can see your eyes move to me right at this very moment, but before you can blink, I've become transparent again.

I think you know that I’m here. I’m not sure what you think about that, but you won’t tell her. Your wife.

So when she was at work, and your son was reading, you were looking at my little corner. Once I almost appeared, but I couldn't. We ended for a reason. And I think you know that too. I am only here because I needed to know if you were going to be alright. You are. It’s time for you to let me go. And then I’ll wait for you.

I think I sensed the moment you were slowly letting yourself move on. It wasn’t noticeable to others. But I saw. I saw how your eyes were on me only once a week, once every two weeks, till, eventually, it became once a month.

There are a couple of things about current shipping culture that confuse me.  

1. The focus on whether or not a pairing will become canon as a reason people should ship something or not.  Do you not understand what the “transformative” part of “transformative works” means?”

2. This idea that saying “I ship that” means “I think that, as presented in canon,this is a perfect, healthy relationship that everyone should model their relationship after.” 

Sometimes shipping something does mean that.  Sometimes shipping something means “Person A is a trash bag who doesn’t deserve person B but I would love to explore how Person A might grow to deserve Person B.” Sometimes it means “I want these characters to live together forever in a conflict free domestic AU.”  Sometimes it means “I want Person A to forever pine after Person B.  Nothing is beautiful and everything hurts.”  And sometimes it just means you like their faces and want to see Person A and Person B bone in various configurations and universes.
