....Anyone who knows me in real life and has had the pain JOY of seeing me with my favourite squishmellow (who is actually with me right now, so my girl says hello!) will know that I will attack (both verbally and physically) anyone who touches her. I don't know. I just feel super protective over her to a concerning extent.... so yeah, I obviously picked the squishmallows tehe >:)

We’re gonna pretend my train of thought makes sense okay .
I was working on that animation with her literally all day yesterday so I was staring at her face a lot and her teeth reminded me of Varian for a sec & we ended up here
This is by no means solidly canon but I think it’s funny
Uhhhh tagging @mexicanvarianz cuz I mentioned you in the image & I probably wouldn’t have even thought of this without your art/headcanon lmao

no, the prisons didn’t have windows, because why on earth would humans need to see the outdoors?? that’s positively ridiculous!
but if they did (and if varian wasn’t, most likely, in the very lowest levels), there’s a faint chance that the king and queen might have had another lantern ceremony while he was incarcerated. a ceremony he watched through the window.
in “happiness is…”, rapunzel finds lanterns with messages in them for her. (it is utterly heartbreaking and one of the moments when tangled: the series really shines.) i don’t doubt that, while the king and queen have some idea where she is this time, they’ll still want to send a message, for themselves and the kingdom. a message that has more hope in it this time around.
now, quirin has been in corona for, as far as we know, over twenty years. he would have caught on to the lantern tradition and been a part of it.
so, all his life, varian would have lifted lanterns into the sky with their reflection in his eyes. every year, he’d either be in quirin’s arms or right next to him. when he was old enough to, he would have felt sympathy for the lost princess, because wherever she was, she probably didn’t feel as safe and whole and part-of-something as he did on these special days.
but then he actually meets rapunzel— legend-come-to-life— and she’s like a goddess. and then she reveals herself to be human in a way that hurts him, and he reveals himself to be demonic (in his eyes), and he fights her with everything he has. and then he’s sitting in a cell and watching those lights, without his dad. and he grieves quirin, but he also grieves the kid he used to be, and the faith he used to have in the world.
and how does rapunzel deal with this, if varian were to mention it? how could she look her reflection in the eye, knowing there was another child in a cage, looking out at those lanterns? she’d hate herself, at least a little bit, because she is good and she hates bad actions. and as she does the work of reconciling that with herself— because you can’t (or shouldn’t) change the past, and all good people can do is move forward— a part of her would long for her own cage. it would crave the days when she didn’t have to make such burdensome decisions, and when she couldn’t hurt anyone.
in a way, both varian and rapunzel would be longing for the first years they gazed at those lights.
