All my life they have been referred to as “Ice Plant” and I still remember at 6th Grade Science Camp, my teacher breaking one of the leaves and placing the broken end on our tongue. The plant created this cooling sensation similar to putting an ice cube on your tongue. For simpler 6th Grade Me, that was awesome and entertaining. Thinking back now, I’m pretty sure that he placed the same leaf on multiple students tongues before using a new one. I’m grossed out now thinking about this memory. Too often I’ve heard someone lament that if only they had someone else’s societal position, job, skin color, whatever it is that their life would be better. That mentality has always confused me because why would you want to trade for a different set of problems? Trading places with someone else doesn’t magically rid you of problems but instead you inherit a different set of problems. Envy is one of the Deadly Sins for a reason. It’s not bothered by these things and continues to do it’s own thing. While in London I was without cell service and upon returning I started to wonder how much of this city would I have missed if I filled my idle time with my phone. I’ve become cognizant of how often I look at my phone and while I’m trying to limit that, I still instinctually grab my phone anytime I’m idle. Ironic that I’m lamenting how much I use my phone in a social media post. However, it’s something that we need to think about because we’re losing the ability to connect with people and gain new perspectives. We get stuck in our own little world and shut ourselves off from everything outside of the screen. Challenge yourself this upcoming week to limit your phone use. “The Pose” Modesto, 2018 . . “Trust the timing of your life” - Too lazy to find where I heard that but it’s not mine. . . There’s something about being able to capture that exact moment that excites me. It’s something that drives me to keep shooting.
