Hi, hoping you can help me. There's an audition coming up that's for both Little Mermaid and Sweeney Todd. I'm hoping to be considered for Ariel and Johanna, but stumped on a song that could work for both. Any ideas?
Some options I think could work for both are I Wish It So from Juno (I’ve sung this for Sweeney and was cast as Johanna), Much More from The Fantasticks, Mira or Yes My Heart from Carnival, The Beauty Is from The Light in the Piazza, or When Spring Is In the Air from Music in the Air.
I’ve also recommended songs for Ariel HERE and Johanna HERE if you’d like to check out some more!

hi!! do you have any recs for liesl from sound of music??
same sound of music anon! but would you recommend something wonderful from the king and i? and if so what cut would you recommend?
Unless you’re of Asian descent, I wouldn’t recommend singing Something Wonderful, since it’s sung by an Asian character. It’s also sung by a character much older than Liesl, so I wouldn’t say it’s a good fit for her.
I’ve suggested songs for Liesl HERE

Do you have any suggestions for songs that could be used for a woman auditioning for the title role in the Spongebob musical? (The production is explicitly doing gender blind casting) Some ideas that I had were “Good Morning Baltimore” from Hairspray, “I See Stars” from Mean Girls, or “Sugar Cloud” from Ride The Cyclone
These are some great choices! Upbeat with a can-do attitude is definitely the way to go for Spongebob. A couple other songs I'd suggest are The Big Blue World from Finding Nemo: The Musical, Morning Person from Shrek, I Love Play Rehearsal from Be More Chill, Christmastown and World's Greatest Dad from Elf, and My Grand Plan from The Lightning Thief.

HI! i’ve adored your blog and it’s been so helpful to me for YEARS now, but i have yet to ask something on here so i thought now was the time!!
I’m auditioning for Head Over Heels soon and am interested in primarily in Philoclea (or Pamela) and wanted a recommendation of some audition songs for it! Ideally, I would LOVE if there was some contemporary/pop rock mix of a song that also showed off a bit of legit soprano? (because of the end of Good Girl in HOH) idk if that exists but that would be so cool. I hope this finds you well, thank you!!!
Thank you so much!
There's definitely the possibility of finding pop/rock songs that show off that legit range in the form of whistle tones, or you could interpolate them in a riff, but I wouldn't worry about it too much since the auditors can always test your range if they want. That said, here's a mix of songs both with and without whistle tones, and a mix of both pop and musical theatre.
Some of the songs I'd recommend are Lovin' You or I'm In Love Again by Minnie Riperton, Just This One Time by Cher, Right In Front of Your Eyes from The Wedding Singer, You Can't Walk In Your Sleep, Can't Stop The World, or The Way You Dance by The Go-Go's, Inside Your Heart from Bat Boy, Make A Move On Me, A Little More Love, or Moth To A Flame by Olivia Newton-John, Not Her Way from Tales From the Bad Years, and Love Will Lead You Back by Taylor Dayne.

Hi Meg :) I’m totally stuck on what to sing for my school’s spring musical. We’re doing Fade Out Fade In and none of us have every really heard of it before lol But I want to go for the lead I think Hope? I have a really low voice and I can belt but not like high belt, but since I don’t know the show I don’t know what to sing lol Do you have ideas?
I love Fade Out Fade In! It’s such a hidden gem, packed with some great comedy songs. For Hope, I’d recommend Happily Ever After from Once Upon a Mattress, I’m Going Back from Bells Are Ringing, See What It Gets You or Everybody Says Don’t from Anyone Can Whistle, I Want to go to Hollywood from Grand Hotel, Someone Woke Up or the title song from Do I Hear A Waltz, I’m the First Girl in the Second Row from Look Ma I’m Dancin’!, I Made a Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles by Carol Burnett, One Hundred Easy Ways from Wonderful Town, and I Fought Every Step of the Way from Top Banana.

Hi! I hope this isn’t too obscure but I need songs for Clara and Fosca in Passion?
Not too obscure at all, Passion is actually one of my favorite Sondheims! For Clara, I’d suggest Soon or Remember from A Little Night Music, I’ve Never Said I Love You from Dear World, All For You from Saturday Night, I Wish It So from Juno, Take Me To the World from Evening Primrose, Hello Young Lovers from The King and I, Moonfall from Drood, One Last Kiss from Follies, and Once Upon a Dream from Jekyll and Hyde.
For Fosca, I’d recommend Losing My Mind from Follies, Every Day a Little Death or Send in the Clowns from A Little Night Music, The Garden Path to Hell from Drood, Stay With Me from Into the Woods, Without a Word from A Tale of Two Cities, No One Knows Who I Am from Jekyll and Hyde, Where Is the Warmth from The Baker’s Wife, Not A Day Goes By (alto key) from Merrily We Roll Along, and Wait or Poor Thing from Sweeney Todd.

So this might be kinda a weird question but I’m in a show and the costumer/makeup person just told us we’re required to wear false eyelashes. I’ve never worn them before and the thought of putting glue on my eyes just really freaks me out so what do I do?
You’ve got a couple options here:
1. Magnetic lashes don’t use glue! These lash strips have magnets on them, and there are two different kinds. One kind has just one strip of lashes and comes with magnetic liquid eyeliner that the magnets will stick to after the eyeliner dries. The other kind of magnetic lashes have two strips of lashes with magnets that stick to each other, and you put one strip on top of your real lashes and the other below, so your lashes are sandwiched between the magnets.
2. Eyeliner/glue hybrids! There are several eyeliners out there that double as lash glues, so you just do your liner as you normally would, place your lashes before the eyeliner dries, and it’ll hold them just like lash glue.
3. Practice with your lash glue! I promise it’s not as scary as it sounds, and I used to hate it too. The easiest way is to apply the glue along the base of the false lash strip, let it sit for a minute or two until it gets tacky, and then place it as close to your natural lash line as you feel comfortable (you can always fill the negative space with eyeliner), holding it in place until it’s dry enough to stick. Some people do have allergies to certain types of lash glue, so I’d recommend doing a bit of research to find the right glue if you have any cosmetic allergies/sensitivities.
4. Tubing mascaras! Many mascaras out there are able to create a visual effect similar to falsies, such as tubing mascaras that essentially coat your lashes in a tube of fibers, making them significantly longer and fuller. Any mascaras that mention tubing, fibers, lash-extension effects, or the like would probably be good options.

Hi there! Auditioning for Edwin Drood and have to sing something golden age. Wondering if you have any recs in general but specifically for the character of Rosa Budd? Love your account!
Thanks! I’ve recommended songs for Rosa before, but the only one that’s golden age is I Wish It So from Juno. There are so many lovely and haunting contemporary soprano songs I wish I could suggest, but since you have to stick to golden age, I’d add Dear Friend from She Loves Me, I Loved You Once in Silence and Before I Gaze At You Again from Camelot, Old Maid or Is It Really Me from 110 in the Shade, So In Love from Kiss Me Kate, No Other Love from Me and Juliet, and I’ve Never Said I Love You from Dear World.

Do you have suggestions for auditioning for Francesca in The Bridges of Madison County? I’m a little young for the role (I’m 33) but I have a mature soprano voice and have been playing older/mother characters literally since high school. I have a couple song ideas but I’m not sold on them, so I wanted to ask what you’d suggest!
Bridges is one of my favorite shows! For Francesca, I’d recommend Take Care of This House from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Unusual Way from Nine, Somehow I never could believe from Street Scene (Weill opera), Tuesdays Thursdays from Far From Heaven, Fable or Dividing Day from Light in the Piazza, and All That Matters from Finding Neverland.
