Couple Angsts and Fandoms Response

Lucy and Tim broke up on the Rookie last night, but I'm feeling oddly detached from the sadness and anger that many in the fandom seem to be experiencing. I thought Melissa and Eric did a magnificent job and I'm intrigued on where the show is taking their characters and relationship, but I'm not worried that this break is permanent.

Is this a function of age or have I simply gone through this often enough with other fandoms that I know how to ride the waves and just enjoy the story?

I'm trusting the process even though I'm a 90s kid and I remember when shows toyed with fans emotions and rarely provided a satisfactory payoff. Kimberly sending Tommy a Dear John letter on Power Rangers. Janeway and Chakotay being flirted with during the entire run, just to have Chakotay and Seven be a couple in the end out of no where on Voyager. Buffy killing Angel to save the world right when he got his soul back. He comes back later on, but their relationship is never the same.

Mid 5x11, after the little league practice and Lucy leaves after the phone call from the shelter later.

Tim watches Lucy leave and worry builds up in the pit of his stomach. She’s fine. She can handle it. But his eyes follow her to her car, and he watches as she gets in and drives off. He shakes his head, he will call her later see how everything went. And he smiles because he can just call her now and he can meet her somewhere so they can hang out a little more.

“So you and Lucy huh?” Genny says snapping Tim out of his thoughts. Tim turns to look at his sister and she has a shit eating grin on her face. He keeps his face neutral, although he’s not sure how long it’s going to last. He is thinking about Lucy after all.

“What about it?” He asks. Genny rolls her eyes at him and pushes at his shoulder.

“Oh come on Tim!” She says but Tim just stares at her blankly. “I saw the way you two looked at each other, the way you worked together.”

“We work together all—” Tim starts but Genny shakes her head at him rolling her eyes once again.

“Bullshit.” She says. “I know you guys are close but it seems different now.” And it is different now. Not that Tim is going to admit that to Genny.

“It’s not different. We are just close.” Tim says shrugging. His phone buzzes in his pocket and he takes it out and looks at it. It’s a message from Lucy and he has to bite his tongue from smiling.

He opens it up and read it.

Lucy: Hey can we meet somewhere?

Tim: of course. Everything okay?

Lucy: I will tell you later 🩷

Tim sighs and pockets his phone again before turning back to his sister who still has the shit eating grin on her face.

“I like Lucy Tim. You don’t need to hide her from me.” Genny says.

Tim rolls his eyes. “I don’t know what you are talking about.” He says although it does warm his heart that Genny likes Lucy and when they finally came clean, she would approve.

“Tim.” Genny says sounding exasperated. “You can tell me. I don’t know why you are hiding your relationship.”

Tim sighs and pitches his nose. “I’m not—” He begins but Genny cuts him off.

“You are.” She says. “And I’m happy for you and Lucy. You finally figured it out but—”

Tim sighs loudly. He wants to tell Genny about him and Lucy, hell he wants to shout it from the rooftops. But they agreed to keep it a secret until they figured it out. Tim knows how he feels about Lucy. The past few week, the first date, the makeup date and everything in between have been amazing and everything he dreamed of and more. Every single minute they spent together, made him realize how much he wanted her. And how being with was worth every second.

“Fine.” He says. “We are.. together. But we are keeping it a secret for a minute.”

“Why?” Genny asks curiously.

“Just to see how we feel.” He answers. And suddenly he’s itching to be back by Lucy’s side.

“How do you feel?” Genny asks a smile spreading across her lips. Tim can’t help but smile himself.

“I.. really like her. And it’s been going good.”

Genny smiles at him and comes forward to hug him. “I’m really happy for you Tim.” She says. “You deserve this.”

“Thanks Gen.” he says softly.

Lucy texts him to meet at the woman’s shelter. He frowns but drives there anyway. When he gets there Lucy is pacing outside and she looks worried. He climbs out of his truck and she sees him and stops.

“Hey.” He says. He walks towards her and engulfs her in a hug. She melts right into his embrace. “What’s going on?”

“Kyra went back with Oliver.” She says. “He’s manipulating her and she—” Lucy shakes her head in frustration.

“Baby, you know how these cases go. Kyra is scared of what Oliver will do if she leaves. Or turns him in.”

“I know.” She whispers. She looks up at him and stands on her toes to kiss him. “It just stinks. I want to do something to get through to her but—”

“I know.” Tim says. “Do you want to meet at my house. Get some Kojo cuddles in.”

“You read my mind Bradford.” She says a smile forming on her lips.

He smiles rubbing her arm. “Look Genny knows about us.” He says. She raises her eyebrows at him but she doesn’t look mad.

“Really?”

“Yeah she kind of figured it out and wouldn’t stop bothering me so I told her we are keeping it a secret.”

“It’s okay Tim.” Lucy reassures him. “It’s bound to come out sometime.”

“She asked me how I feel about you.” He says. Lucy grabs on to his shirt and pulls him closer.

“And how do you feel?” She asks blinking up at him. He takes a deep breath and pulls her closer, her hand resting on the small of her back.

“Like I want to be around you all the time, and I worry about you. And you are just amazing Lucy. Helping Kyra out, wanting what’s best for her even though she’s pushing you away.” He says. Lucy’s eyes light up at his words, as he bends down and gives her a small kiss.

“That’s how I feel. And I’m all in.” He says.

“Me too.” She says. “Thank you for being you.”

He smiles at her. “So I’m not just a friend huh?” He teases and she scoffs and hits his arm.

“Jerk.” She says but she is smiling. “Can we go now? Maybe Kojo will appreciate me.”

Tim laughs and wraps himself around her. “Believe me I appreciate you. No friend has ever made feel like this.” He says and she squeals when he lifts her up and kisses her.

“You me happy.” She mutters when she’s back on solid ground. He takes her hand and leads her to her car.

“I will see you at my house?” He asks her. She nods once and then kisses him as the moon shines down on them.

This is pretty great.

I've been seeing chatter about Nolan and Genny and what that means for Bailey, and I just remembered that both Peyton List and Jenna Dewan have both played different versions of Lucy Lane on television and it amused me to no end.
