Elijah D0m (Photographer) - NYC Based
Growing up, did you surround yourself with creative people? - When I was growing up I was mostly surrounded by those who played sports, like football or basketball. So being a sports player sort of grew on me until I took a photography class during my freshman year of high school.
Why photography, Elijah? - Why photography? I don't know, I think photography sort of chose me. I found the interest in it and ran with it. I realized I like photography after I developed my first roll of film in school. The process of developing film in a dark room I thought was pretty cool.
When did you buy your first camera? What design? - I brought my first camera right after I graduated high school. I have moved to NY for college and started working in retail and saved up 3 months worth of money and brought a cannon DSLR EOS rebel series.
Are you inspired by any famous photographers? - I am inspired by a lot of photographers, not famous but well known such as Terry Richardson, Christiana Paik, and 13th Witness.
What would you be doing if you were not doing photography today? - If I wasn't doing photography.... I know I would be in school for architecture. That's something i was really interested in, and I just love taking landscape photos of buildings.
What do you think of the creative individuals in the youth culture now/the youth culture at large? - I feel like the youth is what's the is world now. The youth is taking over, everyone knows that. Today's youth is too advance, and we knew that so we took advantage and own what was already ours, the world.
What has been your greatest accomplishment thus far? - My greatest accomplishment has to have been just being me.
Would you consider yourself an "artist" or "creative"? - I would consider myself to be both and artist and creative. I mean, I'm an artist cause I'm working towards perfect a craft which is art, and a creative cause I'm always trying to create and invent new ways to make my artistry progressive.
What keeps your passion for photography alive? - The life of being a photographer, people I surround myself with and my experiences. I feel like all these moments deserve to be everlasting and what better way than to photograph them?
Where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years? - I see myself at a better and different place than I am now. I'm all about progression so i always work towards that. If I'm not progressing I feel stagnant, and I don't like to feel stagnant.
What advice would you give to say, a kid in high school who is stuck between being "cool" or pursuing his passion for the lens or any passion for that matter? - To all kids, I would suggest sticking with the thing that makes you happy -- the thing that makes you, you. Always progress in whatever it is that you're doing and never care what people have to say about you or your craft.
