Fly The Black Flag for suuuuuuure 😍 the lovely Emma @thegreyj drew an artwork of Pirate Captain Aelin and i an IN LOVE WITH IT, and if FTBF were ever to be illustrated or turned into film, I think I would die of awe

15. How do you come up with titles for your fics/chapters?

I have no idea 😂😂😂 some fic titles are borrowed from songs or song lyrics, some are a few words from the story, and some are completely random. For chapters, I usually try and sum up what the chapter is about in the title without using too many words. Or I just number them instead of trying to be creative 🙃

Okay UMMMMM a little bit of explanation here: this is a tiny little bit from a random idea that Emma @thegreyj and I (and our angst monsters) may or may not have in a Google Doc somewhere 👀😈 it's a coworkers/work rivals AU with heavy emphasis on rivalry

Aelin dared a glance back at Rowan, sprawled out atop his bed, his breathing deep and steady, the dark gray sheets tangled around his limbs, and squelched that tiny flicker of affection her traitorous heart dared to spark. Not the time, she reminded herself, squaring her bare shoulders as she crouched down by his work bag. Quietly, she slipped her hand into the pocket where he kept his headphones and chargers and other small electronic things, her questing fingers quickly grasping the smooth plastic surface of a thumb drive. 

Perfect. 

She held it up to the moonlight filtering in through the window, making sure it was the same device which she’d seen him use to save his presentation for tomorrow–a proposal for a new client that both of them wanted. Arobynn had told them to present separate proposals to the management team to decide which of them would meet the client. 

What better way to shake things up than to switch the presentations? She couldn’t contain her positively evil smirk as she swiftly stowed Rowan’s thumb drive in her purse, replacing it with her own, identical one, which had her proposal saved onto it. In a move she thought was rather genius, if you asked her, she’d given the file the same boring, stupid name as Rowan had given his–Proposal for Lochan Project. That man and his inability to come up with creative titles, how the hell did he expect to get promoted to director of operations if he couldn’t even name his PowerPoints?

ICYMI, there was fear that companies were scraping public AO3 fics to train their AI without the consent of AO3 or its users. That fear has been confirmed.

AO3 has written about what they’re doing (and what they’re not able to do), and they recommend restricting your work to AO3 registered users only. [Instructions here]

This gross misuse of the archive by techbros is why I’ve locked down my fics for the foreseeable future. I recommend the rest of you do the same.

Secret project time!

So i'm technically posting this a day early, but I couldn't resist. This is something new I'm starting this year, posting a wrap up of sorts for the rowaelin fandom at the end of every month!

There's a section listing out every new multichapter fic started that month, and then taken from the poll I sent out earlier this month, a section where I list shoutouts to different writers and fics that you guys put down! And then finally, also from the poll, there's a section where I'll highlight different reasons why we love rowaelin every month!

If I come up with some new ideas, it may change structure from month to month, but without further ado... here's edition 1!!

Rowan stopped walking in the middle of the sidewalk and turned to face her with an arched brow. “Did you just call me cute?”

Aelin blinked as she realized what she’d just said. She saw the shock on Rowan’s face dissolve into light amusement and a small smirk play at his lips the longer she sputtered for a response. It was the damned smirk that snapped her back to life, scoffing, and hoping her face didn’t look as hot as it felt.

“I think I complained about your unfortunate singing.” She put as much bravado behind the remark as she could and made to walk around him.

Despite their often-heated bickering and petty rivalries that her other coworkers always seemed to have some sort of ‘agonizing sexual tension’ or ‘just kiss already’ comment about, neither she nor Rowan had crossed that line. The one that let them simmer in held gazes and lingering touches without worrying anything about the whys. They had an unspoken understanding that she’d just broken with one tiny, stupid, accurate word.

Rowan put a hand on her shoulder, stopping her from walking away. She lifted her chin and caught his eye, daring him to make some smart comment. She readied herself for it as the smirk on his face grew, even as she was both thrilled and annoyed at herself for being thrilled that he wasn’t going to let her brush it off.

“I heard that part,” he huffed, and a white cloud of breath floated between them. “Before that – what did you say?”

Their group had nearly rounded the corner of the block but neither paid the carolers any attention.

“I think your hearing is as bad as your singing.” Aelin tried to argue as she glanced away from him. But Rowan pulled her attention back by tugging on one of the strings hanging from the side of her hat. “I didn’t say you’re cute,” she huffed at his raised brow, “I said — I said…oh shoot!”

A Holiday Dream - snippet

I had the weirdest dream, Aelin thought as her brain was reaching consciousness. Her eyelids still felt heavy, so she didn’t try to open them yet. Instead, like any normal human being, she tried to feel around her bed for her phone. She was patting the bedding, the pillows, the body next to her-

There was a body next to her.

Suddenly, her brain was wide awake, and her eyelids popped open quicker than a lightning.

Then she realised her hand was still touching the warm, naked chest next to her. Swallowing loudly, she turned her head only to see the familiar silver hair glinting in the morning light. As if sensing her eyes on him, the silver-haired man sighed in his sleep and turned slightly towards her, his hand grasping hers.

Aelin couldn’t help but to stare at their hands together. It wasn’t just a dream.

Then the smile took over her face, and happiness enveloped her entirely. Rowan was home.

She didn’t know how long she simply watched her boyfriend sleeping, but at some point, she realised his beautiful pine eyes had started looking back at her. Oh, how much she had missed those eyes.

“Good morning, love,” his voice was deeper than it usually was, as was normal for him in the mornings. Aelin blinked and teared up. He really was here.

“Rowan,” she choked and reached her free hand to touch his face, her other hand still entwined with his.

“Yes, love, I am really here,” he smiled and wiped away the few escaped tears from her cheek. “Happy Yulemas.”

Okay but I have this very distinct moment in my head and it definitely should be part of your cowboy AU. A very hurt/comfort moment too.

Aelin and cowboy Rowan are reuniting after something terrible happened, which made her think he was injured or dead. He thought he was going to die. Then, as they see each other, they start running towards each other. Then there's this all consuming embrace.

Rowan rolled over onto his side, burying his face into the pillow in a futile attempt to bring on sleep. Gods, why the hell was he like this? A year ago, he'd never have had any trouble going to sleep after a long, exhausting day.

Now, though, if Aelin wasn't by his side, sleep completely evaded his grasp.

As if summoned by his rambling thoughts, his phone buzzed, Aelin's beaming face lighting up the screen. He reached out and grabbed his phone, swiping to answer. "Hey, Fireheart, what's up?"

The male voice that answered was...not what he'd expected.

Nor was the news that voice delivered.

"Rowan Whitethorn? I'm Aedion Ashryver, Aelin's cousin. I...There's been an accident."

Rowan's blood froze solid in his veins. "What?"

"You need to come to Cheyenne Regional. Now." Aedion Ashryver sounded frantic, as if he was teetering on the edge of a breakdown himself. "I...She's in surgery right now and they haven't updated me in almost two hours. It's bad, Whitethorn."

It's bad. All of a sudden, every inch of Rowan's body was on high alert. He barely remembered pulling on sweatpants and a t-shirt and his boots, barely registered sprinting out to his truck, barely realized he was driving until he reached the city and had to slow down to the speed limit or risk getting pulled over. It's bad.

As he parked in the visitors' lot and raced inside, Rowan sent up a desperate plea to whatever gods were listening.

Please, don't take her from me.
