[mdzs] Analysis of Jiang Cheng’s name and character traits

After my previous posts on WWX and LWJ’s names (now LSZ’s also), I decided to do another one on Jiang Cheng, as I think this reference sheds so much light on his significance in the story.

Jiang Cheng’s name derives from a poem by renowned Tang Dynasty poet Du Mu. “云阔烟深树，江澄水浴秋” (yún kuò yān shēn shù, jiāng chéng shuǐ yù qiū) translates to “vast clouds and mists entwine the deep forest trees; autumn bathes in the clear river”. Cheng (澄) itself means “to make [sth] clear and unclouded”.

The poem paints a vivid picture of autumn’s colours dancing on the clear water. Interestingly, the phrase 秋水 (directly meaning autumn waters), is used to describe a longing gaze, deriving from the Chinese idioms 秋水伊人 (meaning the friend one is longing for) and 望穿秋水 (meaning await with great anxiety).

My heart aches at this discovery. Doesn’t this bring to mind JC’s plight of persuading WWX to abandon the dark and perilous demonic path, his envy of WWX and LWJ’s relationship, the months he spent waiting anxiously for his return from the Burial Mounds, and looking after Chen Qing for 13 years whilst keeping faith that one day he might see his brother again? JC’s father chose his name to mean “clear, untarnished”, however throughout his life he lived in WWX’s shadow... he hid his true feelings towards him behind brash words in life and raging condemnation in death.

Jiang Cheng’s zi, or courtesy name Wan Yin (晚吟), comes from a poem by another Tang Dynasty poet Xu Hui. “茶香秋梦后，松韵晚吟时” (chá xiāng qiū mèng hòu, sōng yùn wǎn yín shí) translates to “I wake from a hazy nap in autumn, enshrouded by the fragrant aroma of tealeaves; at dusk I saunter and recite poetry, the pine branches swaying in time”. The words Wan (晚) means “at night” and Yin (吟) means “to recite” or “to lament”. The poem’s depiction of a deep sense of abstruse melancholy – as the poet spends his days in Autumn idly, being indifferent to the world – is widely quoted by Chinese literati of today’s age.

To me, this is a great depiction of how lost and despondent JC would have been the first few years after WWX’s death. Let’s not forget that he is the only surviving character in the story who lost every single person dear to him the moment WWX died – it’s hard to imagine how he managed to rebuild the Sect without anyone by his side...

Bonus trivia: Both JC’s birth and courtesy names are taken from scenic moments set in Autumn. In Chinese tradition, the Autumn season is associated with the emotions of both courage (霜气横秋) and sadness (秋风落叶), the act of mourning (秋祭), and is also connected to the Westward direction, often considered to be the direction of dreams and enlightenment. These words depict JC’s key events in mdzs – courage when he saved WWX from the Xuan Wu cave, sadness when WWX defected from the Jiang Sect, mourning when he lost all his loved ones, and enlightenment when he found out about the golden core and finally resolved his inner turmoil.

dream job: I dont’dream with labor… but I was really interested in teaching until I worked on a private school and the parents there pretended that with money or boasting who they where I was going to give their kids better grades that they deserved (Curiously enough they were kids that had very good grades but their parentss wanted them to have perfect grades). After that I thought I was going to have an Academia life but I ended up dropping out and never finishing my degree.

meaning behind url: I came to Tumblr when I was a huge fan of Yu-gi-oh, I really like her character. I decided to have her name as user but in order to make sure to be able to use it everywhere without worrying that it was already taken, I added my country’s top level domain.

danmei novels by Priest(P大)

I’ve recently gotten into danmei novels and one author in particular caught my attention (and my heart!).

Priest (known in the fandom as pipi/皮皮, sweet/甜甜, goddess/女神) is a Chinese web novel author known for her diverse genre of works, well-developed worlds, multi-dimensional and human characters, strong plots, and lack of explicit content. Her humor is on point - not juvenile nor dry - and the angst is even more delicious. Still, she doesn’t write bad endings. She always gives satisfying and logical conclusions, not leaving the readers empty or feeling frustrated. Her novels are all posted on jjwxc, and as of writing, she is the top author in the list. She is among the Great God-level authors in Jinjiang.

Listed below are her novels that are being translated by several groups/individuals:

Guardian (镇魂/Zhenhun) translated by Rainbowse7en on Wattpad

- probably the most known novel right now in the non-CN fandom due to the web drama that aired last June - July 2018. Completed in 2012. - Modern fantasy/supernatural. A shameless but wise investigation chief, and a reserved but very passionate professor.

Sha Po Lang ( 杀破狼) translated by Northwest Flower on Wattpad

- within the CN fandom, this is her highest rated work. There are a total of three radio drama seasons. A drama and a donghua will be produced in the near future. Completed in 2015. - Historical steampunk/wars. Very political and plot-heavy. The world building is commendable. The pairing have seven years age gap; a very capable, blind-deaf esteemed general and a gentle, intelligent prince.

Silent Reading (默读/Mo Du) translated by Ainushi Translations

- one of her more popular works. A donghua has been announced already. Radio drama is ongoing(also picked up by Ainushi!). A drama will be produced in the near future as well. Completed in 2016. - Douban’s Top Suspense/Mystery Novel for 2018. - Modern mystery/detective story. A thuggish policeman and a flirtatious and nonchalant rich second-generation. 

The Defective ( 残次品/Can Ci Pin) translated by GPS Translations on Wattpad

- her longest work so far, and among the popular ones too. Also her most recent completed BL. Radio drama is ongoing. Completed in 2017. - Donghua trailer can be found here! - Futuristic mecha/sci-fi. “Humans are born from belief, die of belief, and reborn from the ashes of belief.” The one with the largest and most complex plot. Intense, splendid, breathtaking. Has much more to it than you’d expect. “In the bottom of the muck……I found my lucida.”

Revitalization of Fuyao Sect(六爻/Liu Yao) translated by Blob Translations (Chapters 1-33) translated by rustycol (Chapters 34 - onwards)

- will have a donghua and a drama in the near future. Completed in 2014. - Xianxia; found family theme. A cultivation story about how a declining sect is restored by a narcissist, a troublemaker, a meanie, an idiot and a wimpy kid.

Through the Strait Gates( 过门/Guomen) translated by bleachedfish on Wattpad

- Completed in 2015. - One that focuses on commoners: people around me and you. Modern city, loads of angst. Bittersweet past memories mixed up with the current, the pain of the inability to overcome the harsh obstacle of what is called reality.

Faraway Wanderers ( 天涯客 /Tian Ya Ke) translated by Sparkling Water Translations 

- will have a drama in the near future. Completed in 2010. - Historical, Wuxia, Humor, Adventure. A tale about the former leader of a special organization served under royalty, now leaving his past life behind and unintentionally getting involved with the martial world

No Pollution, No Public Hazard (无污染、无公害/Wu Wuran, Wu Gonghai)** translated by Barolaide

- will also have a drama in the near future. Completed in 2018. - Josei, Wuxia. Rapid revenge whilst living a heroic story? These things didn’t exist. Everyone still had to pay back their home loans and credit card debts.

Drowning Sorrows with Raging Fire(烈火浇愁/Lie Huo Jiao Chou) translated by Vermilion Bird Translations on Wattpad

- completed in 2019. multiple adaptation licenses acquired before end of serialization. - urban fantasy and Chinese mythology. A clan patriarch who is a recently hired government staff, and an Emperor from a previous dynasty recently awakened by an unknown party.

Bestial Blade ( 兽丛之刀/Shou Cong Zhi Dao) translated by Flower Succulent

- completed in 2012. - A story about eating, drinking, and killing monsters in the barbaric bestial world.

Lord Seventh (七爷/Qi Ye) translated by Sparkling Water Translations (Chapters 1-5) translated by MaoTranslates (Chapters 6-7) translated by JadeRabbitPendants on Wattpad (Chapter 8 onwards)

- completed in 2010, set in the same universe as Faraway Wanderers (different story altogether, can be read separately and without any order). - Having been given a second chance, Beiyuan had to survive court and decide whether it was finally time for him to let go of his feelings; all while trying to handle the youthful, innocent force of nature who had suddenly barged into his already complicated life.

Jin Se/锦瑟 translated by wangxianbot on Wattpad

- completed in 2011, a yao x human story with xianxia background - In troubling times, old friends have now stood on opposite sides of the front line. Pride and suspicion have pushed them even further, only for them to finally realise, the peace during childhood was the thing we chase after all this time.

As you can see, she really has a diverse set of writing. I’m sure one of those would fit your tastes, even just the quality of her writing is worth checking out ^^

She has a lot more books written and many will be adapted to other forms of media. Will update this list if there are new translations in the future \o/

P.S. You cannot trust her summaries in jjwxc （´∀｀）but you can definitely trust the quality and the HE.
