PARAMORE IS RETURNING TO KL IN 11 DAYS!
Check out our Paramore concert review circa '2010
A sea of red glow sticks hoisted up in the air; thousands of fans carrying placards - of a variety of shapes and sizes - of the band's name; the crowd chanting, almost in unison, "We want Paramore! We want Paramore! We want Paramore...".
That was the scene at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil, Tuesday night. The level of anticipation was high for this American pop-punk outfit that clearly has a very strong following here in Malaysia.
At that very moment, a big, black cloak went up, concealing the stage and everything on it from the 7,000-strong fans that had come to watch their favourite band perform.
Just as this happened, the crowd started to hear the sweet sounds they had come for - Paramore had started to strum their first few chords on the guitar.
Then, as suddenly as the dark sheet had gone up, it fell in a dramatic fashion to reveal what the audience had been waiting for, for six years: Paramore in the flesh, brought to Malaysians by Tune Talk.
And there they were, members of the band, Josh Farro and Taylor York on guitar, Jeremy Davis on bass, Zac Farro on drums and Hayley Williams as the lead vocals. Their music sees traces of influence by other musicians like Jimmy Eat World, Sunny Day Real Estate, Death Cab for Cutie.
With 'Ignorance' their first song for the night, without much coaxing, they easily got the audience onto their feet, jumping and rocking their hearts out.
Hayley gave a stellar opening. Her strong vocals reverberated through the parameters of the stadium as the crowd became fuelled by her energy.
Midway through, she exclaimed, "America should see this. We can't believe it took us so long since we started touring to make it over to Kuala Lumpur. We should have been down here years ago. Little did we know you guys have been patiently waiting for us.
"How many of you have never been to a Paramore show? For those who haven't, welcome to the family! We'll suck you in and will never let you out, because family is for life."
The crowd roared in acknowledgement, as if rejoicing in what Hayley had just said. Just like that, she had made everyone feel a sense of oneness with the band - as if we had gone through a special, sacred initiation and was now part of Paramore.
They played songs from their current album 'Brand New Eyes' and peppered the concert with tracks from their past two albums 'All We Know is Falling' and 'Riot!'.
As they slowed things down a little with an acoustic set that came complete with a white couch on stage, Hayley requested the crowd to have their lighters, glow sticks and cellphones up in the air. This was followed by bassist Jeremy plucking the unmistaken first chords of 'Never Let This Go'.
A few ballads later, the band picked up the beat again, rocking away right to the end of the concert with more rocking songs.
True to their word about family, Hayley singled out a guy from the crowd and invited him to sing the song "Misguided ghosts' with her.
Local Indie group Y2K who was the opening act for Paramore that night, was called back on stage to help them bring the solid concert to a close.
It was indeed a night to remember. What's more, we were truly blown away by how down-to-earth Hayley and her band mates were.
As for some of the fans who were lucky enough to be invited on stage to be with them, it would be a truly, fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime experience, never to be forgotten.
Sparkles which streamed down behind the band and confetti made of paper hearts which burst into the air signaled the end of the concert that night.
With a bow from them and a breathy thank you, we bade them good night amidst rousing applause.

9/10
