I've been thinking about getting some baby rats for a while now, since all of my boys are getting old, and as I was browsing my local rescues I found the perfect pair :)

Meet Bandit and Outlaw, the two newest members of my little colony! They're so sweet and affectionate, I love them so much.

Even though I miss Tripod quite a lot, I'm hoping these guys will help fill the space he left behind 🧡

Thank you to everyone who gave suggestions to help Tripod gain weight, but this morning I came home from classes and found he had passed away.

He wasn't in pain, thankfully, and these past few days he has been as spunky as ever. I'll miss him so much, but I'll never forget his little nub leg, the way he would lay on his side to eat yogies, and how he acted like he hated attention but always came out to say hello.

you can get nutrition supplements prescribed by the vet, which are usually pretty flavorful, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting your rat to take them out of the syringe. you can also feed older rats meat baby food for extra weight, and if they’re having too hard of a time eating pellets, making a pellet mush they can lick up is also an option. i really hope this helps. best of luck! 🐀♥️

Does anyone know a good way to get an old (2 year) rat to gain weight?

Tripod dislikes being held or touched much, but I was handling him and realized he was pretty skinny and I'm concerned, haha. I know they lose weight when they get older, but these are my first rats so I'm not sure what to expect as they age (besides what I read on google)

Cap insists on trying to groom my lips and teeth, regardless of if I have eaten or not. It's funny, but once he shoved his entire head in my mouth 😬

Fun fact: if you eat something around my pet rats they will physically try to pry your mouth open with their tiny cold hands
