Noor Al-Anqar was born 5 months before Israel started their latest genocidal assault on Gaza. All she knows is war. Her first words were said in war, her first steps were taken in war. The world around her as she knows it exists like this. She is 19 months old, and in the picture above, she is helping carry the water jugs that help her family survive. How is this fair!?!

We do not know how long this ceasefire will last with the current governments. It is up to you, YES YOU, to raise the money so this child can escape Gaza. She is not receiving adequate nutrition, education, or enrichment in these CRUCIAL years of her development. If the ceasefire is broken, the chance of crossing the Rafah border will likely go away again—so while there are no bombs raining down around this baby, let’s raise the money to get her and her family (consisting of five other children under the age of 10!!) out of Gaza!!!!!

Hi, I came across your blog in my "for you" feed. If this comes off as a stupid ask, by all means feel free to ignore it....I've scrolled a bit and it seems like you have some critique of the brand of MLs that seems to be becoming more and more pervasive in leftist spaces. I've been trying to branch out and understand various leftist ideologies better and I think you said at some point a lot of what MLs believe is kind of what Marx was critiquing. I gathered as much, but also I'm new to a lot of this (like I'm more of a STEM person and only recently had time to start looking more into this stuff). There are a lot of posts you make that I would like to understand, but a lot of the phrasing and terminology is super unfamiliar to me. Do you have any recommendations for texts that would help me understand your perspective? (Also for the record, I'm not an ML, I think I'd probably consider myself more of an anarcho syndicalist, if that's a thing that matters here). I hope this makes sense? thanks for reading.

The ML concept of revolutionary strategy and socialism is basically that of Ferdinand Lassalle, who Marx had politically collaborated with because they agreed on the importance of working class participation in politics but who Marx been very critical of because he undermined the political independence of workers by his state worship and opportunism. Lassalle wanted to make “strategic” deals with Otto von Bismarck, the Chancellor of the Reich, and he believed that the aim of socialism was to build a society that would unite intellectuals and workers in the state, which they would serve in order to subordinate their egos to the greater good.

Marx’s most systematic critique of Lassalle and the state socialists inspired by him was in Critique of the Gotha Programme. Some of his comments here or there about Lassalle and those inspired by him can also be read almost like an analysis of MLism, because it was so much the child of organizations influenced by Lassalle’s strategy and thought (like Social-Democracy). This isn’t to do a Great Man thing of blaming Lassalle as an individual, but the fact that he represented a certain historical tendency in theory and politics that continues into MLism.

That pragmatist-opportunist tendency often leads to substitutionism, where what’s good for the organization or leader is considered to be good for the movement. Working class power is interpreted as the power of their official representatives. Of Lassalle’s pragmatism that conflated expediency for the organization with socialism, Marx said:

He was merely imitating the gentlemen of the National Association. But, if the latter were invoking Prussian ‘reaction’ in the interests of the middle class, he was shaking hands with Bismarck in the interests of the proletariat. Those gentlemen had more justification than Lassalle, inasmuch as the bourgeois is accustomed to regard the interest he perceives immediately in front of his nose as ‘reality’, and as this class has, in fact, compromised everywhere, even with feudalism, whereas the working class must in the nature of things be genuinely ‘revolutionary’.

About the personality cult Lassalle encouraged around himself, and which via Social-Democracy influenced the Bolshevik usage of the iconography of leadership as something identified with the communist party itself:

I ‘bear no ill-will’ (as Heine says) and nor for that matter does Engels. Neither of us cares a straw for popularity. Let me cite one proof of this: such was my aversion to the personality cult that at the time of the International, when plagued by numerous moves — originating from various countries — to accord me public honour, I never allowed one of these to enter the domain of publicity, nor did I ever reply to them, save with an occasional snub. When Engels and I first joined the secret communist society, we did so only on condition that anything conducive to a superstitious belief in authority be eliminated from the Rules. (Lassalle subsequently operated in the reverse direction.)

Marx wasn’t only against pragmatism. He also criticized those who want the party to just try and command or direct through their programmes and platforms:

Every step of real movement is more important than a dozen programmes.

Lassalle also wasn’t the only one who could be considered a predecessor of modern MLism. There were also sources from behind German Social-Democracy. One major element that would influence them was the early French “Marxists,” who advocated for boycotting elections on principle and refusing all reforms even strategically, which is what led him to make the famous “I am not a Marxist” statement. To one of the main French “Marxists,” Jules Guesde, he said this about how he thought of strategy:

The great task for socialists in France, is the organisation of an independent and militant workers’ party. This organisation which must not be confined to the towns, but must extend to the countryside can only be done by means of propaganda and continuous struggle, an everyday struggle always corresponding to the given conditions of the moment, to current necessities. Only posthumous Jacobins know only one form of revolutionary action, the explosive form. This is quite natural on the part of bourgeois who have only ever raised their shields after having already occupied dominant social positions.

The point for Marx was not just getting big numbers of members or followers, not just putting in hours to activism, not just building an organization. It was about the general working class movement and its becoming a politically independent faction. This couldn’t be done from above, by leaders. The leaders could only articulate and help along a momentum that would already have to be there. The revolution is about that momentum and not about a list of accomplishments to be waved around by leaders.

There’s a good overview of Marx’s thought in the book Karl Marx by Karl Korsch. There’s also an essay by Raya Dunayevskaya called Post Marx-Marxism as a Category which is good for introducing the differences between Marx and Marxists, but I think her approach can tend to be polemical. Peter Hudis’s Marx’s Concept of the Alternative to Capitalism and Hal Draper’s The Two Souls of Socialism go more into detail about the practical significance of this as well
