It was a while since my last post about wandering Ha Giang province from my 14-day-journey from North to Central Vietnam. I came back to my routine of busy studying and woking. However, the memorial trip always occupy a place in my brain’s warehouse and I really want to share it to everyone on my blog. I will write about the trip not only to store my memories but also to share to anyone who interest in wandering the mountain area in North Vietnam.
The area of Sapa was discovered and developed by the French in the early 1900. With the cool, fresh atmosphere and beautiful landscapes, many people compare Sapa with Dalat and called it Dalat of the North Vietnam. However, a special point that differentiate Sapa and Dalat is the ethnic minorities that live around Sapa. Together the ethnic people bring a very special thing to the land (even I don’t know how to describe it) that I really enjoy when come there. Maybe it’s the culture or the traditional activities of those people or whatever, the land is special to me in it way.
Around Sapa city centre, there are 3 big villages Cat Cat, Ta Phin, and Ta Van that have a lot of visitors come when they travel to the area. I have been in Ta Van and Ta Phin so I can show you what I did and where I went. For the last village, I will try to tell you things that I know or heard from (and will update later next time I visit 😉)
But first, let have a quick talk about the central Sapa..
Me and my friends (the team 😎) came to Sapa city at around 7p.m. It was night, and we were hungry so the top thing that I remember was Sapa’s night market with a lot of foods for BBQ..

.. and after my stomach was full of foods, I could notice many restaurants, coffee shops, hotels, souvenir shops, etc. on my ways back to the hotel. Sapa is not a quiet but kind of a vibrant city with a lot of activities and tourists. By the way, there were also some places that I visited: Sapa’s central market, Cau May Street (Western Town), the Central Lake, and the Stone Church (I lost the image 😱).
Sapa market
we called it the western town at Sapa. A lot of foreign visitors stay at the road
Sapa’s central lake at night
There are some places around Sapa city such as the Golden Stream, Love Waterfall, Fansipan Legend, and the Mountain Fansipan if you want to check out.
Now let’s go to the villages.. 🙂
Ta Van Village
Ta Van is the home of some ethnic minorities, typically the Giay and the Mong people. The village is 8km away from Sapa centre and becoming a hot destination that attracts many visitors.
Ta Van village has a lot of activities for visitors to enjoy, starting with playing as an ethnic minority and wandering around the village for taking pictures to trekking on a trail that lead to the ancient-rocks field. There is a campsite at the ancient-rocks area and also a stream for anyone who want bathing. If you don’t want to stay outside under the cold weather of Sapa, there are also ‘homestays’ in the town with cozy furniture and decoration, and a chef to cook your meals. By the way, those homestays serve breakfast for visitors. You can fulfill your stomach before start discovering the village 😉

Tips to travel Ta Van village:
The checkpoint to Ta Van village start working at 7 a.m. If you go to the village before that time, you can save VND 75,000 for the entrance ticket.
Homestay at Ta Van village is really cool to stay, but they only have crepes and instant noodle for the breakfast (as I can remember) 😩 If you wanna stay there, click here for booking.
Ta Phin Village
Ta Phin is the village where I spent the most of my time at Sapa. It’s not a popular place with activities for tourists, but a typical place to discover the culture, and daily life of the ethnic minorities, especially the Red Dao, in the area (in my perception).
Thanks to a friend that we met in Sapa city, we had a chance to discover the life and culture of the Red Dao. Red Dao people locate a lot in Ta Phin with the village centre where they offer many services for visitors to enjoy, and the rest is where we stayed, in their homestay, to have the same feels of the locals and learn more about their culture, and life. Honestly that is where I have the most experience and memorable stories.
It was worth every penny of me to spend time there. I enjoyed good foods and liquor made by the locals, took herb-bathing of the Red Dao, did hiking a lot of hills in the area to visit people who live there, held on hand the most beautiful but top poisoned foliage, luckily attended a local wedding, drank till drunk, learnt more about culture, gained more experience, and especially spent time with my friends for memorable moments.

Tips to travel Ta Phin village:
We stay at Mrs. Phau’s homestay, you can contact her at ‭+(84)1675056281 if you wanna stay there. She has a son, A Van, who also open a homestay. You can contact him at +(84)1256806308. Both homestays are good with a warm bed, amazing dinner and breakfast, and 1 time taking herb-bath a day. Furthermore, they can pick you up (by motorbike) at your hotel at Sapa city centre.
Some of the culture and tradition of the ethnic minorities are very different with us, so research clearly and be careful when you come there.
The ceremony of the Red Dao’s traditional wedding last very long, you shouldn’t stay there to join the whole celebration (unless you really like it).
It’s great to do hiking around the area but be careful with the beautiful leaves or flowers there, it can be poisoned and dangerous.
Try to pack stuffs as less as possible. Check the weather for your clothes. If you want to go out at night, a flashlight is must needed. And a pair of hiking shoes is better.
If you need a friendly tour guide who can speak English, contact my friend Tung at  +(84)989192962, he can help.
And you should try the grilled sweet potato, it’s really good there 😉
..hm
if I remember anything I will update here 😅
Cat Cat Village (to be updated soon..)
Cat Cat is a village of the Mong people which is located about 2km away from Sapa centre. This is a very common place for tourist at the area. Coming to the village, there are a lot of beautiful scenes for you to take pictures, also some activities such as making jewelries from bronze or silver, brocade weaving, and discovering the Mong’s culture and tradition.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to visit the village so I don’t have pictures to show 😑 But it’s great to leave this place for the next time so I have a reason to come back to Sapa LOL 😝

Ha Giang was the first destination in my 14-day travel from North to Central Vietnam. With me, this place is definitely ideal and awesome for backpackers to wander around. The reasons? Beautiful landscapes, good foods with cheap prices, and especially the experience of riding motorbikes on the passes surrounded by amazing sceneries. Also, Vietnam’s northernmost point is at Ha Giang.
Extract from my note: Arriving in Ha Giang City at 4:45AM, we had breakfast and rented motorbikes to wander around Ha Giang province
We had to go through Quan Ba town and Yen Minh town .. As we could not take our eyes of beautiful scenes on the way to Dong Van Town, we arrived at 6 p.m., later than expected. Along the way Dong Van town, there are many marvellous and picturesque landscape with the famous Buckwheat flower.. Next day, our plan was to visit H’Mong King’s Palace, and Lung Cu – the Northernmost point of Vietnam, then moving to Meo Vac town.. In day 3, except the good breakfast we had at Meo Vac and the enjoyable, memorable experience of riding motorbike on the passes at night without lights, we just were on the road all day long. Finally we arrived in  Ha Giang City around 9PM and directly went to a homestay in Tuy village to spend the rest of the night with delicious foods and special wine.
When to Go?
January and February for plum flowers, the peach flowers, and yellow rape flowers blossom.
April for Khau Vai love market.
September and October for ripen rice season.
November for Buckwheat flower season
December with snow (if you are lucky ^^!)
How to Go?
To have a full and awesome experience at Ha Giang, riding motorbike around is highly recommended. It’s better to have a round trip to enjoy the province. Here is my route: Hiring a motorbike at Ha Giang city and starting from the city → Quan Ba → Yen Minh → Dong Van → Meo Vac → Ha Giang city.
Tumblr media
This is the address where I rent motorbikes for the trip – Group 15, Nguyen Trai Ward, Ha Giang City. Phone no. is 091 779 7269 or 097 815 9123.
Where to Go?
Dong Van
You have to pass Quan Ba, Yen Minh, and a lot of beautiful scenes with the total distance at around 150km to go to Dong Van. Always keep your camera ready, or you will regret missing the views that you didn’t capture.
Locals call it "Dragon Eye" – the lake is seen from Lung Cu Flagpole, Vietnam's northernmost point. Meo Vac
To come to Meo Vac, you have to go through Ma Pi Leng pass, one of the four top passes in North Vietnam. The pass is 20km long which is also named the “Happy Road”.
There are not so many places for visiting in Meo Vac but for foods
Yeah! you are going to the right destination.
Visit: hm
actually, wandering around the town is interested enough.
Eat: We went to Thanh Phuong restaurant most of the time for meals. It had a long list of foods cooked specially with North-mountain-area’s recipe. The restaurant’s address is no. 51, group 3, Meo Vac town, Ha Giang. There is a place which has Banh Cuon (stuffed pancake). It’s also a special food at Meo Vac and it’s different with the one we have in the South Vietnam. Furthermore, you should try the foods at street shops at the town too (I don’t really remember the place but you can see it while wandering around the small town).

Ha Giang City
The city is the start and also the last point of the trip around Ha Giang. However, at the time we come back, we chose to stay at Ban Tuy village rather than city centre for the rest time at Ha Giang province. Here is the phone no. in case you want to book the homestay that we stayed – 094 282 50 88 or check it out at Agoda here.

So finally I quit my job to join my friends on a journey of stepping out of safe zone and discovered my country, Vietnam. It was 14-day trip going from Ha Giang to Quy Nhon, and it was the 14 most memorable days to me in 2016.
Instead of 3-week trip as planned before, the whole trip was occurred in only 14 days due to heavy rains and floods in some provinces in the central Vietnam. In that short length of time, we have been to Ha Giang, Sapa, Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Danang, Hoi An, and Quy Nhon. I’m going to update all the detail of places on the journey later in other posts. At first, let me show my trip’s schedule:
We (me & my friends) departure to Hanoi from Ho Chi Minh City on 9 Oct in the late evening. Right after arrival, we took a night sleeper bus (a bus with beds inside) to go to Ha Giang. I wouldn’t call it my first day of the trip because we spent most of our time in sitting boringly on plane and bus from HCMC to Ha Giang. And our journey was truly started on the next day

Hà Giang Province, Oct 10 – 13, 2016:
– Day 1, 10 Oct: Arriving in Ha Giang City at 4:45AM, we had breakfast and rented motorbikes to wander around Ha Giang province. Our first destination was Dong Van which was about 150km away from Ha Giang city. To get there, we had to go through Quan Ba town and Yen Minh town where we could take some rest and have something to fill our empty stomach. As we could not take our eyes of beautiful scenes on the way to Dong Van Town, we arrived at 6 p.m., later than expected.

– Day 2, 11 Oct: Our plan was to visit H’Mong King’s Palace, and Lung Cu – the Northernmost point of Vietnam, then moving to Meo Vac town.
About 2km away from Dong Van, there was an intersection which led to H’Mong King’s Palace in one direction and to Lung Cu in another way. We firstly went to the Palace, about 13km from that intersection, then went to Lung Cu, 26km from the Palace. In the afternoon, we crossed Ma Pi Leng, one of the most beautiful passes in the northern mountainous region, to Meo Vac which is about 50km far from Lung Cu.

– Day 5, 14 Oct: The journey exploring Sapa started this day at 6:30 a.m. We came to Ta Van village at 8 a.m. and had breakfast there. We went to a cool homestay to find some foods but they just had instant noodle and crepe.
Ta Van is one of the three popular villages that many tourists visit. We played as the ethnic minorities to take photos and visited the ancient rocks there, then back to Sapa at 1 p.m.

We went to the Waterfall of Love at 2 p.m. There is Fansipan Legend – the station with cable cars that take you to Fansipan peak, on the way. And if you want to trek to the mountain peak, the entrance at Waterfall of Love is also the starting point to hike to Fansipan.

We then left the waterfall in the afternoon to go to Ta Phin, 1 of 3 most popular villages in Sapa and also the one that’s less affected by tourism. We stayed at a homestay of a Red Dao family, the ethnic people in Sapa. They served us the most memorable dinner with their iconic liquor, paddy wine, and local foods. Especially the Red Dao herbal bath, my body is inundated with the herbal hot water in a round wooden tub; it’s one of the best ways to relax after a long day wandering around. Those are the best memories of me in the trip :D

– Day 6, 15 Oct: It’s a whole exploring day at Ta Phin village. We went to the silversmith’s house of the village. I intended to buy some souvenirs there but he wasn’t at home :(
We then strolled through 10 hills to visit the fortune-teller of the village. Beside telling the future, in Red Dao’s culture, the fortune-teller can also affect the marriage of people in the village. The Dao people need the fortune teller to see if a couple are suitable in age or destiny so they are able for wedding. Unfortunately, there was some problem with him so he didn’t see our future. Instead, he invited us to enjoy lunch at his home. That lunch was so remarkable with the super-delicious carp fish that the teller had fed in 10 years and the 50 degree spirit he made.
6th day of the 14 days journey. Strolling around the village to explore and enjoy the atmosphere of the high mountains ⛰ See interested stuffs as well as the most beautiful and poisonous leaves – La Ngon 🌿 at Ta Phin village, Sapa, Vietnam đŸ‡»đŸ‡ł . (try new IG's feature, swipe to see more 😁)

One special food of the village was the grilled and boiled sweet potato. We were invited to Van’s home, the son of the homestay owner that we lived, to enjoy the food.
The day end after we enjoy dinner and drinking a whole big jar of paddy wine, the really needed drink for the cold weather outside.
– Day 7, 16 Oct: We were invited to join a wedding in the village. That was a very lucky opportunity to enjoy and learn more about the culture of the Red Dao as it’s quite rare to see a wedding there. The celebration of the wedding had so many steps following the tradition of Red Dao people. It was so interested for me to see the wedding and the foods were delicious.

We then said goodbye with Ta Phin village to go back to Sapa at noon. Did take some rest and go shopping at Sapa market, it had many good brocades and handmade stuffs.

– Day 8, 17 Oct: We said goodbye to Sapa at 7 a.m. and arrived at Hanoi at 12 p.m. by Camel’s sleeper bus, phone number (+84) 98 569 4914.
Hanoi – Ninh Binh, Oct 17 – 19, 2016:
It was a food day because it seemed like I put everything that I can I could put into my mouth, it had problem right at that night :(( We then strolled around the old town at Hanoi and had to say goodbye with one member in the team :((

We went to a nice acoustic cafe at night for some music but because of my stomach, I can’t enjoy the whole beautiful night :(( [few bad things happen in the day] :((
– Day 9, 18 Oct: Our destination for this day was Ninh Binh, a famous spot for cultural travel in Vietnam. We left Hanoi from Giap Bat bus station at 9 a.m. and reached Ninh Binh at 12 p.m. We arrived at noon so we did not have much time to visit many places as wanted. The ticket at Trang An is 150k VND/ person  for 3 hours sitting in a boat and the ferryman will take visitors going around the area.
3 hours sitting in the boat and the ferryman took us around Trang An, Ninh Binh
as tour 1 has closed for maintenance, we chose tour 2 at Trang An
We came back to Hanoi at 6 p.m. then had some foods and drank throughout the night to end up the day. And my stomach still had problem :(
– Day 10, 19 Oct: A full day of strolling around old town for foods and visiting some popular places in Hanoi.
Menu of the day: . Bun Doc Mung (rice vermicelli with colocasia gigantea and meatballs) at 10 a.m. . Pho Cuon (grilled meat rolled with pho) at 11 a.m. . Miscellaneous foods in the afternoon. . Xoi Man (steamed sticky rice with meats) at 6:30 p.m.

We spent the noon visiting Uncle Ho’s Mausoleum, Temple of Literature, One Pillar Pagoda, and Bat Trang Pottery Village which is about 10 km away from Hanoi’s old town.

The flight to Da Nang city would take off at 5AM in the early morning, we did need to go to sleep early.
Danang – Hoi An, Oct 20 – 21, 2016:
– Day 11, 20 Oct: On a taxi that took us (and 2 strange guys we just met at the airport) VND 415k, we went straight to Hoi An after had arrived to Danang. The noon at Hoi An that time was boiling hot, I was like a meat in a burning pan (OMG!!!). Unfortunately, our homestay did not have AC which was the most wanted stuff for us at that time. We ran around the town to find a coffee shop with AC and luckily, Hoi An Rostery had a cool room (the only place that we could find AC at the old town) so we can stay there till afternoon.

– Day 12, 21 Oct: After having breakfast, we went to a handmade leather workshop to visit some friends. The workshop was really nice, it had classes for people to learn on how to work with leather and create products. It also had some finished products for sale with very good price. Furthermore, the second floor of the workshop was a nice homestay that visitors can rent for staying.

We then hitchhiked a bus to go to Danang at 1:30 p.m. The time that we spent in Danang was short. It was just enough for eating some Danang pancakes, lemongrass skewers, grilled girdle-cake, and visiting Linh Ung Pagoda.

Quy Nhon, Oct 22 – 24, 2016:
– Day 13, 22 Oct: We left Danang at 8:45 a.m. By taking Son Tung Bus we arrived to Quy Nhon, the city of cheap food (to me =]]) at 3 p.m. Even though there were many nice places at Quy Nhon that we could visit, we mostly enjoyed the foods around the city. So this day menu had: Banh Beo (bloating fern-shaped cake), Oc (many kinds of clams), and cocktail at the beach after dinner.

Especially, I love lying on the beach at night.
– Day 14, 23 Oct: We started the day by going to a nearby mountain of the city to enjoy the dawn. Unfortunately, it was a cloudy day so we couldn’t find the sun. Then, as planned, we went to Xep Beach, a nice and quiet beach, to enjoy the sea.

But first, here is the foods of the day: . Banh Hoi Chao Long (fine rice vermicelli with Congee and pig’s tripe) for breakfast. . – Last day: We went to Phu Cat airport which is 35 km away from Quy Nhon to go to Saigon. Luckily, we could enjoy the most cheap and tasty bread with patĂȘ for breakfast at Quy Nhon before taking the flight back to home and end our dream journey.
we take the flight back home and end our dream journey ..
(But that’s not really the end, it’s just the first chapter of the long journeys in the future ..)

So finally I quitted my job to join my friends on a journey of stepping out of safe zone and discovered my country, Vietnam.

Along the way Dong Van town, there are many marvellous and picturesque landscapes that are worth to see once in your life. Ha Giang province is famous for with Buckwheat flower, which can be easily found every corner of the province.
we came to Ha Giang city’s bus station at 4:45 a.m. ..

Meo Vac was a small town which could be called a recommended stop on the journey from Dong Van town to Ha Giang city.  It had many must-try foods that we could not miss.

– Day 3, 12 Oct: It was a long day coming back to Ha Giang City from Meo Vac, about 150km. Except the good breakfast we had at Meo Vac and the enjoyable, memorable experience of riding motorbike on the passes at night without lights, we just were on the road all day long. Ahh, we visited Lung Khuy Cave at Quan Ba in the middle of the day but found nothing excited.

Finally we arrived in  Ha Giang City around 9PM and directly went to a homestay in Tuy village to spend the rest of the night. The highlight point of the 3rd day is delicious foods and special wine at our homestay. That’s all for the third day in the journey.

at Lao Cai city
It was a long day sitting on the bus. We were at Lao Cai territory at about 3 p.m. and arrived at Lao Cai city at about 6 p.m. The owner of the bus had helped contacting a van to take us to Sapa, 1 hour away and we were there at about 7 p.m. Luckily that we met Tung, a very friendly manager at the hotel that we stayed. He took us to the market for a very first delicious dinner in Sapa.

Yomiuri Land Jewellumination, Tokyo
Winter is the season when everyone is preparing for a new year. You will have days off after hard-working times for jobs and studies. So what will you do on those days? Many people in Tokyo, Japan spend their days off to visit Yomiuri Land – I call this place Led Land, a destination which is decorated by millions of LEDs. At this place, there are many beautiful scenes that you can selfie; also,

There are two enormous playgrounds in Japan: Disneyland and Universal.
Let me first introduce you to Disneyland in Japan, where you can have a “ticket to your childhood.”
Disneyland
Disneyland is located in Chiba, Tokyo so there are many transportation methods for you to get there such as by bus or subway. If you choose to go by subway, you would first have to get to Maihama station.
get to Disneyland by subway
.. or by bus
Note that Disneyland is separated into 2 places: DisneySea and DisneyLand. DisneyLand is a playground for kids with soft games and decorated with colorful lights. DisneySea is built for adolescents and adults with more thrilling games.
welcome to Disneyland
Tokyo Disneyland
Preparation
You should avoid going to Disneyland on holidays or in August as students are off to school and the place will be extremely crowded. You will have to wait about 2 to 3 hours to go on a rollercoaster if you go on these days, but don’t let the huge crowd bring down your day.
queue up buying ticket
Another tip is to buy your ticket online. They will ship the ticket right to your doorstep; that will save time waiting in a long line to buy your ticket at the park.
At the main gate, you can see a resort area. The resort is constructed like the castles in Disney stories. If you want to see all of DisneyLand and DisneySea, you can book a night at the resort. Also, it’s better to book the room one month ahead of your trip.
Resort at Disneyland
Let’s Go
The first area you will be able to see are the gift shops where you can find many souvenirs or clothes will Disney characters on them.
As you continue walking, you will see many iconic castles that you may recognize from Disney movies.
Around DisneyLand, there are times posted around each rollercoaster that tell you how long the lineup is going to be until you reach the front. You should get that tickets for the game that you most like because you can only get the second after 2 hours.
The first ride I went on was “Small World.” Basically, the ride is a ship that takes you around all of the Disney fairytales.
“it’s a small world”
The second ride that I went to is the Ghost House. In my opinion, it is not very scary, because the ride is mainly built for children.
welcome to the haunted masion
There are also many outdoor activities such as rowing, and many many games that you can participate in.
Disneyland has a special parade of the characters that appear in Disney stories and movies. The parade is incredible with loud music and many characters. A tip is to get a map and a show schedule at the main gate so you can go see a one of a lifetime performance. You should come 30 minutes in advance to find a good spot to enjoy the show.
The grand finale of the night is at the central square: The Disney Castle. It is a fabulous show with the mix of light, music, and fireworks that will take you back to your childhood.
Find the special shows at TBL’s Youtube Channel.

It has been a week after I went to Koh Rong Island. My friends asked me to join a trip to one of the most beautiful trekking path in Vietnam, Ta Nang – Phan Dung. There was nothing to say, I was in with the team without hesitation.
After the trip to Bu Gia Map, I didn’t think that any trekking route would be a barrier to me. However, Ta Nang – Phan Dung path was a real challenge. That route was really hard to pass but the reward was worth my while. I did think of how camping at night in the top of the mountain was but I cannot think of how awesome it was. A real fascinating experience that I have ever had.
Ta Nang – Phan Dung
Ta Nang – Phan Dung is a 2-day trip with 40 km route that challenges any hard trekkers. The destination is at around Lam Dong, in the middle of Da Lat and Phan Thiet – two well-known travel places in Vietnam. The spot was quite drought when we got there. It would be more ideal if you can go there in the raining season as the landscape will be covered more green by plant development.
Prior to The Trek
Preparing for any trek is always necessary to make the adventure safety and enjoyable. Below is the list that I think you should bring with for this trip:
A good pair of shoes are designed particularly for trekking purpose. It will be a nightmare if you bring running shoes to climb up and slide down the hills.
A sleeping bag or a warm blanket. Night on the top is surely windy and cold.
A small bag to carry the necessary stuffs. You don’t need to bring many clothes for bathing or anything. And if you have porters, they will carry stuffs for you. Nevertheless, in the way out to Phan Dung, you have to do yourself.
Water is vital. Bring enough your needed water for the whole trip. There is a river inside the jungle but I’m not sure if you are willing to drink it (it’s drinkable).
Obviously that you need foods for energy to finish the trip. So consider this ones also.
Tent is necessary for the camping at night.
A flashlight for night use and a knife just in case.
How My Trekking Was
Thanks to the very careful team leader, we had a very good support for the journey. He has ordered 2 porters to help my team (12 people) carrying the stuffs needed. And above all, he brought a lot of foods that can make us gain weight even the trekking was so hard.
This is our schedule for the trip that you can consider:
» Apr 1
21:30 to 22:00 – have been at the gathering point, packed stuffs on the truck and started going to Ta Nang.
» Apr 2
3:30 – arrived at the team leader’s house for breakfast and prepared for the upcoming adventure.
5:00 – arrived at Ta Nang’s starting point. Let’s rock!
7:30 – got to the Bougainvillea House. There were cattle at the house including chickens, pigs and a herd of buffaloes. Those buffaloes were always standing dead and staring anyone who holds up the phone.
11:20 to 13:00 – at the second rest stop for lunch and a quick nap before a long way to the final destination.
Food for the whole trip. And this was how we gained more weight :D
This was the first porter that helped us to carry stuffs in the first stage.
This guy was our porter to the camping point.
Starting point.
On the way!
First rest stop, the bougainvillea house.
Those buffalos were stunned and stared at anyone who kept a phone :))
The first slope in the trip.
On top of hills. First stunning view in the trip.
This is how locals carry timbers over the hills.
Our rest stop for lunch.
The team was having lunch :D
16:30 – finally at the camping point. We started making the tents and preparing for dinner. But first, let’s us took some photos :D
19:00 – dinner was great with a fire-camp, roasted duck, grilled chicken, corn, beers and music.
21:00 – the party on the top was end soon and the team went to sleep.
It’s time to trek!
Meet the team! xD
It’s better to go with a friend than alone!
Alone tree.
Preparing the tent for camping.
Good afternoon!
Fire-camp.
» Apr 3
5:00 to 6:59 – had breakfast and packed belongings for the way out to Phan Dung.
7:00 to 9:30 – trekked  to the Tiger Lake, the first rest stop in the way escaping the jungle (It is a lake where a tiger drank water there; the locals saw that and called it Tiger Lake).
9:30 to 10:30 – we had some meals at the Tiger Lake to gain energy for the way out. That day was harder than the previous day.
11:20 – finished the trek at noon. We waited at the final point for the porters to carry us out of the jungle. The path that porters took us was about 20â€Č and it was super sunny.
First view of the day.
Good morning!

That was a 3-day trip that me and my friends had planned before Tet (Vietnamese New Year). Our first plan was went to PhnomPenh from Ho Chi Minh City then end up at Siem Reap strolling around Angkor. But then the Koh Rong Island showed it’s attraction over the ancient temples, the team has finally decided to wander the tropical islands enjoying white beaches and the super-clean sea.
It’s great to have a planed trip, and below is some info of how we went to Koh Rong in 3 days that you can use to prepare before you go.
Koh Rong Island, Cambodia
Belonging to Sihanoukville province, Koh Rong is an archipelago including 5 islands Tiny Koh Tuich on the South-East, Koh Bong-Po’own and Koh Song-Saa on the North-East, and  Koh Koun and Koh Rong Samloem on the South that make the Commune 5 of Mittakpheap District or Sangkat Koh Rong. Among the 5 islands, there is the biggest one located 25km from Sihanouk where the main pier is placed, from which you can take different boats to go to other islands. Koh Rong is home of 4 communities Koh Tuich, Doeum D’keuw, Prek Svay and Sok San. The islands are now developing with many guesthouses, bungalows and resorts. It’s be great if you can go now because there aren’t so many people, you can still enjoy the natural desert islands.
Prior Time to Go
Main used currency in Sihanoukville and Koh Rong Island is USD, so make sure you have enough cash for use there.
Sunny is great to have beautiful pictures on the beach, but if you don’t want to get tanned, a tube of sun cream should always be in your bag.
The boats at Koh Rong sail awfully, bring some pills for seasick and be careful!
Koh Rong’s main island is more eventful and lively. It has many events and bars at the beaches. If you want a vibrant environment, you can stay there then go to other islands in a day. (We didn’t go like this).
You should note the timetable of the boats there. Obviously noone wants to miss any trip that may affect the whole plan.
Day 0.5 – To Sihanoukville
It was 21:30 o’clock on Mar 24th, we started to go to Ha Tien, Kien Giang. We have chosen the Kumho bus to carry them. It is a nice bus for 160k ticket, you get a bed, a wet tissue, a water bottle, and a blanket. The bus stops at Dong Thap for 20 – 30 minutes then heads to Ha Tien bus station at about 4:40 in the morning.
Day 1 – The Nature Beach
We arrived at Xa Xia border at 6:00 to access Cambodia. There were some Cambodians who stood at the bus stop in Vietnamese territory asking visitors to use their bus service to go to Cambodia’s provinces with a good price (do not believe them, you get what you pay for). If you didn’t book a bus from Prek Chak (Cambodia’s border) to Sihanouk, you can find yellow buses (it’s not usually there). It’s from travel agency and it has quite good service. Because we have booked a bus service to Sihanouk and he has waited us in Cambodia territory so we denied the seduction from those Cambodian guys. By the way, you can consider the bus that carried us, Du Lich Ha Tien’s phone number: 0944440235.
At the passport-checking gate, the customs officer asked us to pay 50k VND/person for the process. Although there is no rule like that, and you can bargain to pay nothing or give them 10k to faster the process, we surprisingly paid for the access. Then another officer took us to a quarantine room to check the temperature, he also asked us 10k VND just for the ‘5s-temperature-test’ that they called health check. OMG!
I’m standing in both Vietnam and Cambodia
An image in customs office
If you see casinos, you are on Cambodia territory.
Casinos are built a lot near the border.
Bbq ribs, our breakfast in the first day and the first meal in Cambodia. It’s really delicious!
After leaving the border, we got on a bus which took us to Sihanoukville. We had lunch at the province in the Olive and Olive restaurant located near the Golden Lion and waited there till 2 tuktuks came and picked up us at 13:00 to the harbour. We got on a fast boat that brought us to Nature Beach. The route took 1 hour from 14:00 to 15:00.
The Golden Lions, the symbol of Sihanoukville province.
Our lunch at Olive&Olive restaurant, it’s was good at taste and price.
Do you wanna drink some?
Tuk-tuk, a common transportation that you can find in Cambodia.
This speed ferry will take you to Koh Rong in about 40â€Č. But we got on a smaller one.
Nature Beach is a private resort located in one of the Koh Rong islands. It’s a very nice place, quite silent, peaceful or I have to say it in one word: serenity. It’s ideal for anyone who wants to escape the noisy world to an isolated place. Wi-fi covers all areas. Staffs at the resort are friendly. Nature Beach has various kinds of accommodations such campsite with tents, or bungalows. Our group has booked 2 bungalows at Nature Beach resort via booking.com, it costed $60/room/4person/night. In the resort, there is only a bar (or it’s the only that I found) where you can be served foods and drinks. We had dinner there. Then bought some beers to the beach, drank together while looked at the sky full of stars and listened to music. That night was really great, it was my first time seeing a red moon in an island.

Campsite at Nature Beach. It costs $10/day.
You can choose to stay in this tent also.

Day 2 – Koh Rong Main Island and Koh Rong Samloem
In the second day morning, we checked out the Nature Beach resort and took a boat to Koh Rong Main Island. I call it the Main Island because there is the main pier in the island where you can get different boats to other places. (I have to say that I prefer this island rather than the Nature Beach. There are a lot of bars and night events here. It is an vibrant island and it matches my type. It would be ideal if we could stay at this island and then go visiting the others within a day). We had breakfast there and wait till 11:30 to start going to Koh Rong Samloem. The ticket to Koh Rong Samloem is $5/person.
Where we had breakfast in the second day, Bunna’s place
There are a lot of bars and night events here.
Sum up events for the whole week
Again, the boat sailed awfully. However, what you see at Koh Rong Samloem is really worth your while. It was the first time ever that I have seen such a beautiful beach with white sand and clear sea. The pictures below will show you views about the island. After some activities there, we leaved the island to Sihanoukville at 15:55 on a happy boat – a bigger boat with drinks but still sail terribly. Ticket for the way out is $3.45 and the prices for meals there vary from $4 to $6.
Koh Rong Samloem is there.

We arrived at Sihanoukville’s main pier at 17:45. Sihanouk appears to me just like Vung Tau, a beach in my country. And because of the seasick made by the ‘happy boat’, we decided to take a bus to Ho Chi Minh City. I was at home at 11:00 the next day.

Life at Dunedin, New Zealand (Part 4)
Coming to Dunedin at night while it is raining outside, it is lucky to have a station in Otago University for me to get off. Thanks to the light from the University, this rainy night becomes less dark to me. The temperature in Dunedin now is 5 degrees which makes me feel like I am in the freezer. I shall tell you a brief description about this place before we get into the trip. Dunedin is located

Khoi Nguyen’s phone is ringing, “hey K, wanna backpacking to Bu Gia Map?” his friend asked. “Yes” he said. That was how his first trip started, after he thoughtlessly answer to his friend’s question. He just thought it would be excited, and his wanderlust said it would be excited. Few days later, his friend gave him an excited plan of 10 people trekking through a jungle, camping beside a stream, having dinner with ‘bamboo rice’ and boar, and sleeping under the stars. ‘Having been going through bad days since the beginning of the year, this trip would start his better days’, he hoped.
Let’s Khoi shows you his trip!
Bu Gia Map National Park
The national park is belonged to province Binh Phuoc, Vietnam. With the area of 26,032ha, Bu Gia Map is the home of 724 plant species including 278 medicinal-valued kinds and various species of mammals and birds.
Before The Journey
You have to contact the managers of Bu Gia Map National Park (no.’s here: +84 6513724235 hoáș·c +84 989 218 912). The managers will assign a tour guide to lead your group to the camping destination (without the tour guide, the rangers and border guards won’t allow you to access the jungle).
Things needed to prepare for the trip:
If you go by motorbike, notice fuel for a long run.
Bring a mask, there are much sand and dust on the way you go, especially at the entrance of the jungle.
There is a long way in the jungle with many slippery stones, a suitable pair of shoes would be ideal to support you. Boots is great!
Foods for breakfast, the tour guide and his assistant will prepare your dinner if you registered.
Energy drink for trekking, alongside water you can order from the tour guide.
Tent if you don’t want to hire from the jungle managers.
Cooking tools: A pot, the tour guide may cook for you a special soup made by plants in the jungle.  Chopsticks, folks if you don’t want to use your hands picking foods.
A Long Long Way to The Spot
Bu Gia Map National Park is about 240km away from Ho Chi Minh City. It will be ideal if you go early, the weather is nicer for a long way. Khoi and the team started at 6a.m and tried to meet the tour guide at 1p.m. Unfortunately, they have lost about 50km so it was late when they arrived and were more tired. ‘Can you image of a bad road with red dirt and a lot of potholes?’, it was how they found in the wrong road.
At Binh Phuoc province, on the way to Bu Gia Map town. Rubber trees alongside the road
Rubber trees, the typical tree that can be found a lot at Binh Phuoc.
Khoi’s experience from the lost: must remember preliminary the route before the trip, maps on smart-phones are quite trustworthy, and ask frequently and differently the locals on the way (they may guide you different directions).
Here is the route that you can go to Bu Gia Map National Park from Ho Chi Minh City by motorbike (or car):
From Ho Chi Minh City, you can follow highway 13 to Binh Duong City. At So Sao intersection (near Dai Nam), turn right to Phu Giao. Heading forward to a roundabout, then turn left to the way with a sign leading to Binh Phuoc. Going straight to Phuoc Long town, you can ask the locals for the way to Bu Gia Map town or Dak O. Then, you will go 25km from Dak O to the central of Bu Gia Map.
It was about 1 p.m, at Binh Phuoc, on the way to Bu Gia Map
Go straight: National Park – Turn right: Bu Gia Map Town
Sleeping Under The Stars And Waking Up in The Heaven!
From Bu Gia Map Town’s welcome gate to the entrance of the jungle, the road is under construction so the main vehicle that can be used here is motorbike. You can contact the tour guide to hire ones.
Red dirt road at the entrance of the national park, it was about 1:50 p.m.
Red dirt road at the entrance of the national park
2 hours trekking in the jungle is really excited to him. Although he has gone 290km by motorbike from Ho Chi Minh City to Bu Gia Map, the tiredness can’t prevent him from the interest of camping beside the stream, sleeping under the stars, and waking up in a straight forest.
The gate made by bamboo trees
We are trekking to the camping spot
A stream appear on the way to the point. I have thought it was the camping spot but no :(( It was still about 1 hour to go =.=
A ranger station inside the jungle, the second time I thought that we would stay here.
The rangers grow vegetable themselves to support their daily meal
Grilled fishes, delicious!!!
Just come to the camping spot and we are preparing a fire camp
Here is the result
Guys are pitching
The tour guides are preparing the meal. That night we had grilled boar meat and rice cooked in the bamboo
Night at the jungle comes very soon. At 8 p.m, without the light from his phone, Khoi can’t see anything but the fire camp. That’s make his first time spending a night inside a forest more special. He found a place to lie down, looked at the sky filled with a lot of stars while listening to the song of the stream, then opened an e-book to read till his eye got tired and fell asleep.
The next morning was amazing. The jungle appeared like in the heaven. Fresh air, the simple but very hard thing that can’t be found in the city, is everywhere. It’s hard to describe the appearance of the forest in that morning; let’s the pictures do:
First seen of that day, heaven in my eyes
This is how we camping
The stream in the morning, and one of my team member is brushing his teeth
The tour guide is boiling the water taken from the stream to prepare our breakfast
Boiled water is used for instant noodle
And here’s the breakfast. We need the energy to trek out the jungle. It is more tired than the way in.
The team is ready for the way out
Slippery stones on the stream. And the best way is just get in the stream :D
The view from the other side of our camping spot
Meet the team ^^
The Secret Waterfall
Because the team hit the camping point at late time in the day and need to get out the jungle in the early morning, no one take bath in the stream. Instead of that, the tour guide took them to a secret waterfall after 2 hours quite tired getting out the jungle. Luckily, seemed that their decision of not taking bath in the stream was right. The way to the waterfall is quite bad and sandy. It would be ideal to swim in the waterfall after you can crossed that very red-sandy road.
The red dirt road to the waterfall
Bad road with many stones and potholes

And here are our shoes. Awesome!

I’m taking GMAT and really want to finish the test in late December. However, the two bad practice tests had just turned me quite stressful. So I have decided to take a quick trip out of the city to refresh my mind. Can Gio was the best among the choices because it has a beach that’s good for relaxing, and especially the cheap and delicious seafood there.
Here is a quick guide to Can Gio from what I have experienced so you can have a plan if this place is on your travel-list!
The Coastal Suburban District Can Gio
Can Gio (Cáș§n Giờ in Vietnamese) is the home to Can Gio Mangrove Forest.
Located 50km from Ho Chi Minh City.
Area: 704 km square.
Population: about 71,000 people.
How to get there?
The most enjoyable vehicle for a short trip here in Vietnam is motorbike. Started from district 3, you go to district 7 then follow Huynh Tan Phat street to Nha Be district before you arrive to Binh Khanh Ferry Terminal. It would be easier when you get to Can Gio, there is a straight way that leads to 30/4 beach. It could take you about 1h and 40â€Č to the beach. If you are thirsty, there are some restaurants that serve coconut drink along the way.
From dist. 3 to dist. 7 then follow Huynh Tan Phat street to Binh Khanh Ferry Terminal – the ‘blue’ way
Besides that, along the way to the beach would have signs that guide you to the Monkey Island and Vam Sat Mangrove Forest if you want to visit there.
.If you wanna take a bus to Can Gio:
There is a bus no. 20 which will take you directly to Binh Khanh Ferry Terminal. You need to buy a ticket to Can Gio district. Then, at the other side of the ferry terminal, you can get the bus no. 90 that will take you to 30/4 beach.
What to play there?
It’s better to go with a group so you can play many games on the beach. There are also some spots that you can take pictures. But to me, I would love to take a seat to the beach, sit down and enjoy the atmosphere that I can’t find in the city.
And what to eat?
One of the biggest reasons that I came to Can Gio is seafood. It’s really cheap, fresh and delicious. You can find many kinds of clams and seafood there: oyster, octopus, squid, shrimp and especially mantis shrimp – my favorite.
In front of the beach, there area some rest-places where you can hire chairs, and they serve meal too. But you shouldn’t buy there; near the 30/4 beach is a seafood market with all the kinds of seafood and those are cheaper. The seller will cook and deliver to you at the rest-places.
