Tom was in the nursery rocking Sybbie to sleep and singing Irish lullabies.  She had been sick lately with a cold and teething so Tom had been spending a great deal of time with her in the nursery.  He was so worried about losing Sybbie also that he couldn’t bear to leave her alone with the nanny; he had to be the one taking care of her.  It was late and he had fallen asleep while rocking Sybbie who had also fallen asleep in his arms.  Sometime in the middle of the night Tom opened his eyes half sleep and noticed someone in the room next to him watching Sybbie in his arms.  He realized it was Sybil.  He thought he must be dreaming and started talking to her asking her if she had come back to him.  She said no but she was always here with Sybbie watching over her and telling him how proud she was of Tom.  She saw that he was a great father as she had imagined he would be.  Sybil told Tom that she was at the christening and it was a beautiful ceremony and how happy she was that Mary was Sybbie’s godmother.  Tom told Sybil about him being the estate manager and she loved that idea and was happy her family had finally accepted him and come to love and value him as she did.  Mary did promise her that they would one day.  Then Tom realized what Sybbie was always pointing at – she was seeing her mother.  It warmed Tom’s heart to know Sybil was watching over Sybbie.  He told her how he didn’t feel he could ever leave Downton because he felt such guilt because of her passing and he owed it to her to stay at Downton and raise Sybbie at Downton.  In tears, he told Sybil how much he loved her and missed her and wished she had never gone and that he couldn’t bear to live without him.  It was only because of Sybbie he was even alive.  She too was sad and expressed the same love.  She told Tom she wanted him to move on, that it wasn’t his fault she had died and she would be okay with him finding someone to make him happy again and for Sybbie to have a mother.  She gave Tom and Sybbie a kiss and turned to walk away which caused Tom to cry out.  This woke the nanny up and she came to Tom and woke him up.  Tom woke up and realized he had been dreaming and it wasn’t real which broke his heart.  Then he noticed Sybbie was awake, smiling and pointing her finger at her bed and saying “mama” and blowing kisses.  Tom realized he hadn’t been dreaming after all and felt a weight lift from his heart.

The rest WAS detail. There were just a couple of details Tom and Sybil weren’t counting on - that both of their families would turn their backs on them.  But they loved each other and were committed to building a future together as a family.

But it was hard.  They cherished the time they were able to spend alone together in their tiny flat in Liverpool, making plans and voicing their dreams that now seemed so distant. One thing they knew for sure,  they were meant to be together.

And then the letter arrived.  It seemed one person was happy for them - Martha. “Congratulations!” they read.  “How wonderful!” it continued. “Come to New York for a visit or to stay. You’ll always have a home here. Just contact Mr. Edward Johnson of the Cunard White Star line - your passages are paid, he’ll just need a date.”

Sybbie moves to New York after her father dies, wanting adventure. There she finds again a pilot she met in the war. She doesn’t return to Downton as America proves to be much better.

The Bransons had to do some negotiation with Mrs Hughes when they returned to Downton Abbey. After being caught three mornings in a row having morning sex by a housemaid, they agreed that no-one would come into their room in the morning until Tom came down for breakfast.

Tom and Sybil spent countless hours in the garage playing their favorite game… making faces at each other… who ever laughed first, lost! This lasted for hours…

43. The Iconic Headdress

Sybbie’s hair on her wedding day at first dons the Crawley tiara, but it doesn’t sit right with her. As everyone leaves to give her some time alone, she takes her hair down as she never wanted to wear it in the first place, going to find the box from beneath her bed. The tiara is left on the bed..

As she walks down the stairs, many gasp as they see that she has tied a blue sash around her waist, her hair long down her back. Tom smiles as he recognises her headwear immediately. It is the blue headdress from her mothers harem outfit.

“What are you wearing?” her aunt Mary asks. 

“What I want to wear for my wedding.” she smiles. “If Ma can’t be here in person, then she can certainly be here in spirit… Why not show that with something iconic of hers?”

Tom had never seen his sister in law so stunned… nor had he been so proud.

He was fine when he helped Sybil get into the car at the station. He was fine when they drove through the village, but as soon as the castle came into view, he began to wonder what the hell was he doing back here… Then he saw the love between his wife and her mother and remembered the reason.

41. Lady Sybil Lives

When they have enough time in the mornings, Sybil and Tom take their daughter to their bed and together they cuddle under the sheets. This habit continues also when they have more children so that their bed becomes really crowded later on.

Some nights Tom would feel a heaviness fall upon him, pressure on his chest. He didn’t know if it was the sorrow coming back or just his body remembering the way his wife felt when she would lay her head on his chest. “I love you and miss you so much, my darling” he would whisper into the darkness of their room and fall asleep instantly, where he would dream of Sybil.

Sydney: Season 3 Christmas Special; 8.30pm on Channel 7

For anyone who lives in Sydney, the Christmas Special airs tonight but from what I know, it's split into two spreading until next week (dammit channel 7). So Aussies, maybe this episode will inspire some lovely headanons afterwards? I'd love to hear them! And if anyone wants to chat about the episode, hit me up on darlingsybil. Tom can truly count the number of lovers he had before Sybil on just one hand.  His last sweetheart before his wife was a girl back in Ireland; he had no sweethearts while in England.  And Sybil is the only woman he’s ever said “I love you” to. 

When the time comes for he and Sybil to finally make love, Tom is also nervous because he realizes that it’s been over seven years since he’s been with anyone, and a part of him wonders if he still remembers the “how to’s” of such intimacy.  Even though, technically speaking, Sybil is not his first, in many ways she feels like she is, and that night he rediscovers the joy and pleasure of lovemaking, perhaps for the first time, because he realizes that whatever he experienced in his past was not lovemaking because it wasn’t with Sybil.
