In an interview with their fansite in 1999, Julian and Noel talked about blending their writing and stand-up together!
Julian: “I think the important thing is that now me and Noel are working on things constantly rather than….you win an award and go "yeah" and then just don't do anything but we're keeping working on this stuff which is the most important thing so that next year we've got even better stuff than last year. We didn't even know that we could work together, we were very surprised. We thought we might cancel each other out.”
Noel: “We thought we were both too weird and that it would be awful and it was for the first couple of gigs, it was a bit like…he does a bit, I do a bit, he does a bit but now we're working out how to work so it’s funny with both of us talking about the same thing.”
On the Future Sailors commentary, Julian talked about how he and Noel used to "exhaust" audiences during Arctic Boosh (1999)!
Julian: “We used to do that, in the early days, with Arctic Boosh. We used to do really really good first halfs, didn’t we? Improvising all over the shop, all this stuff would be happening. And then the second half, they would be so tired.”
I loved the listen-along so much! I've always liked the radio show just a teenie tiny bit better than the TV show, so I may be a little biased, but I genuinely had a great time ❤
It also gets bonus points because 'Tundra' is my favorite episode, Dave and the others tweeted out some lovely photos, and Nigel Coan posted my favorite picture of the night: a zoo map for the Zooniverse!
What started me collecting old articles was the idea that I could maybe find the article about Noel and Julian’s famous Edinburgh row. (A classic tale featuring poor Lee Mack who couldn’t get his show reviewed, let alone an argument.)
I thought Noel said it was reviewed by The Scotsman, and that may well be true, but this is from The List. I imagine it’s the same incident, and not a different one..? I suppose multiple news outlets could have reported on it, but it’s possible Noel just got the name of the paper[/mag] wrong. (It’s been a long time, and I’m sure he never expected to be fact-checked.)
Shout out to The List for having excellent free archives! Pout out for The Scotsman (and so many more) wanting me to pay to read random 10-20 year old articles.
