I completely agree that it makes sense why they reacted that way. They were taught that everyone with markings on them is dangerous, evil, and sent to kill them. So yeah, they see those markings on their friend and have a violent knee jerk reaction. From their perspective, they’re just finding out that she’s secretly been the enemy the whole time. Of course they feel hurt and betrayed.

But they need to get over that shit, cuz that is not Rumi’s fault. Yeah, she kept a secret from them, but they need to look at their words, actions, and attitudes leading up to that point that made her need to keep that secret.

And yes it’s clear that they have always cared about her, but that still doesnt mean they were a safe space for her. My family care about me a lot and I care about them too. They’re still extremely queerphobic and have said a lot of hurtful things to me since coming out. I am very, very glad I didn’t come out to them as trans till after I had moved out. Admitting I liked girls already landed me in conversion therapy as a kid. Things would have been SO MUCH WORSE if they also knew I was trans while I was living under their roof.

In the end, they were able to overcome their prejudice and accept her, but not everybody’s going to be willing to do that, no matter how much they care about you, especially not in such a short time frame. Yes, you’ve definitely got a better shot at things being well recieved if you can do things in a calm environment with time to talk things out, but make sure you’re prepared for if things go bad.

Little thing on K-pop Demon Hunters

Great movie, do not get me wrong, groundbreaking animation and I may or may not have cried a little. But I do have a bone to pick and I haven’t seen anyone else bring it up.

“I don't know why I didn't trust you to be on my side”

That line from the opening of What It Feels Like is wack. What the fuck you mean ‘you don’t know why you didn’t trust them.’ They consistently expressed hatred for and and threatened violence towards a group of people you are a part of and the moment they found out you were a part of that group they turned on you and threatened you with weapons. Girl, this litterally just happened two minutes ago. You had EXCELLENT reason not to trust them.

I think the movie is a breathtaking representation of shame and the way it affects people. The way that shame was instilled by a perental figure, reinforced by her peers, caused her to isolate herself and channel that self hatred into violence against others like her? Oof. As a queer person that grew up in an extremely queerphobic and shame based environment, that hits hard.

Given the parallels to the queer experience though, I think the movie’s message that ‘Rumi should have just trusted her friends with her secret instead of hiding’ is a rather dangerous one. Those friends were not demonstrating themselves to be a safe environment.

“So we were cowards, so we were liars”

Listen here, you are not a ‘coward’ or ���liar’ for choosing to keep personal information to yourself that other people may use to harm you. Choosing to stay in the closet when the people around you have threatened violence against queer people is NOT cowardly. It is smart and may very well save your life. You do not owe them that information. If the Natzi’s come knocking on your door asking if you’re hiding any Jews and you say no when in fact you are hiding Jews, you are not a liar in any way that matters.

Yes, it’s great that this is a kids movie and her friends magically instantly got over their prejudices and accepted her wholeheartedly, but irl that could have gone so different. Yes coming out takes bravery and I am very proud of everyone who decides to do it. But I am equally proud of everyone that stays in the closet till they are certain they can ensure their own safety, y’all are no less brave.

Name is ironic because he doesn’t really like hunting

He would much rather just hang out and watch the animals or forage for plants

Cried the first time his mom tried to get him to kill an animal

He’s gotten over it and can hunt when necessary now but would rather avoid it when he can

Basic competence, but not the best of the team at it

Total country boy, respectful and kind. Always willing to lend a hand or get down in the dirt

A bit impulsive

Not in a ‘wild and crazy’ kind of way (except on rare occasions), more in a ‘does the straightforward thing without thinking about possible ramifications’ kind of way

Will nock down a bees nest to get at the honey before thinking of a way to get rid of the bees

Never panics, more of just a “hmm, well now I’m in a pickle”

Drives his teammates INSANE

Lives in his own world

Daydreams a lot

Surprisingly introspective

Squeamish, does not like being dirty or dealing with gross things

Always running calculations and future scenarios

Has an older sister he’s kind of terrified of but respects a lot (she calls him Zeezee)

Can come off as rather callous and condescending

Not trying to be mean, just usually doesn’t think about how his tone and word choice will be interpreted

Tends to assume he’s the smartest person in the room cuz he’s an elf from an important family who taught him to think so

When trying to be kind it often ends up sounding forced and stilted because he’s awkward and usually nervous while doing it

He knows he’s not very well liked and that people often find him abrasive

Generally he tries to compensate by being knowledgeably useful, but if he actually wants someone to like him he’s always scared of doing or saying the wrong thing and coming off as a prick anyways

Loves finding other people who are knowledgeable about things but can get rather insecure and defensive if someone questions him (being the smart science/magic guy is all he’s got you know? Take that away and there’s no reason for his team to have him around)

Tendency to get competitive and take a game too seriously

Hunter knows a lot about animal behavior from observation as well as a lot of practical knowledge about plants

Zulian knows the science behind the plants and their magical uses

If one spots a cool plant they’ll usually point it out to the other and end up holding up the whole group while they geek out over it

Zulian knows a lot of ancient history, politics, and magical legend

Hunter’s a good listener and has gathered a lot of stories and anecdotes from people back home

What hunter IS aware of he usually doesn’t tend to make assumptions about. If someone wants him to know something he figures they’ll tell him.

When Zulian tries to pay attention to people’s body language or tone or whatever he ends up wayyyyy overanalizing and stressing himself the fuck out, so he usually just tries to keep his blinders on in that department

Legitttttt. Honestly so darn frustrating sometimes. Like, on one hand, I’m glad that people wanna understand my experience, and I like talking about it sometimes! But at the end of the day “being referred to this way makes me feel happy and seen and being referred to that way makes me feel like I’m being stabbed and spit on” should be enough. At a certain poin’t I don’t care weather you get it or agree or not, I should not have to do any more convincing than that.

Describing gender, for me, is like trying to describe the color red to a colorblind person. My dad asked me what my definition of a boy was and idk man. It just sounds cool. It reminds me of the theory that everyone’s seeing different colors but no one knows it. Orange and green could be swapped for another person for all I know. We’re all seeing different colors of gender

I almost never do self portraits cuz I’m weirdly insecure about some of my features, but I’m chillin at comicon and wanted to draw faces. Didn’t bring paper big enough to make a sign, and walking up and asking people if they’d like their portrait drawn requires a bit more social energy than I’ve currently got in the tank. So self portrait it is. I honestly love how this turned out though. Captures the feeling perfectly.
