Changes are coming!

Hi everyone! Long time, no posts, am I right?! 

Previously, I focused solely on the Toronto Blue Jays. Now that I am living in the heart of downtown Toronto, I decided it’s time to open my blog up to all of Toronto’s sports teams. Stay tuned for new posts and new topics!

What now?

As you may have noticed, the season has certainly not gone in favour of the Blue Jays this year. Injury after injury and loss after loss have left fans wondering “what now?”. Here’s what I’ve been noticing. 

We have some amazing prospects working their way towards a MLB starting spot (Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Rowdy Tellez, Anthony Alford and Richard Urena to name a few). Heck, Guerrero Jr. is 4th for all prospects in the MLB! Currently, the big problem is that these amazing young players are in positions taken up by big fan favourites - Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki. In fact, out of the 30 Jays prospects currently on MLB.com’s 2017 Prospect Watch, 15 are non-pitchers and out of those 15 players, five can play 3B or SS.

This leaves the team with a dilemma. Do we trade away a veteran for a newbie? Or do we waste the prime time of our new players for a few more multi-million dollar deals with our 30+ fan favourites? Even worse, would we be forced to trade away our talented new players for a different deal?

The best call for now is to test out our young talent. Since we are 7.5 games back (at the time of this post) from a Wildcard slot, let’s continue to bring up some new faces. Why don’t we let Urena hit more walk-offs and see what our prospects can do! 

There’s a lot of unknowns right now, but one thing is for sure: there’s always a bright future ahead.

Trade Thoughts

It’s that time of the year... the trade deadline is approaching quickly and many Blue Jays fans are scratching their heads, wondering what management will do. I have to admit, I’m also one of those fans. There are so many options and paths to follow, and I’m intrigued about which one the organization will take.

For most fans, they have “untouchable” players. From talking with people, Stroman (sorry Yankees), Osuna and Donaldson are frequently brought up as such. Then, there are rumours (cough Liriano cough Estrada) about possible trades and what we could receive based on the current market.

But here’s the thing... to get those really good deals with worthwhile additions, you need to trade a really good player. Tim and Sid made excellent points about this on one of their shows earlier this week, and I completely agree with them. The return from trading a player like Liriano is WAY different than the return from trading an “untouchable” like Stroman. Blue Jays fans want a good return, but won’t give up a worthy player to achieve that.

So what do we do? Personally, I’d love if we could stay competitive. I don’t think that this team needs a rebuild at this moment. What I would love is to maybe get one new player from the trade to help shake things up (ideally a great on-base hitter). It’s very possible that next season, we will have a few rookies from our farm team move up to the big leagues (which is really exciting); so while the trade deadline is great for right now, it may not be the most important thing for our future.

For now, all we can do is sit and wait. Grab the popcorn friends, we’re in for a wild ride starting on Monday.
