imagine showing people your bravest most noble knight and he falls over in front of everyone sounding like pots and pans crashing to the floor

ive been embroidering for nearly half my life and it still blows my mind how cheap it is as a hobby tbh. it can be as expensive as you want to make it, sure. I've definitely invested in nicer tools when I had the finances to do so. But relatively compared to other hobbies it's kinda nuts that a splurge on materials is like. 9 bucks for a pack of some of the fanciest needles you can buy. Silk thread for 6 dollars. The industry gold standard thread is the stuff already available at every single craft store in the USA. If you follow exacting patterns that require a lot of color changes it can add up, but those are often projects that require weeks or months of work. Let's say you had 50 color changes and the project uses most of each skein. That's months of hobby-ing right there, for about 50 dollars plus the cost of base materials which is under 10 dollars.

One of my highlights of Rowany Festival (the Kingdom of Lochac’s biggest camping event: basically our version of pennsic) is the day I take a few hours off to go wander in the woods around the campsite. I grew up in the forest, so have a good enough sense of direction that I’m not concerned about getting lost, and will sometimes wander pretty far.
One Festival, a few years back now, I was on such a walk, and I found a long disused road. I’m talking four metre trenches gouged by water flow type unused - it was almost a hazard by foot, let alone car. I followed this for a while, until it joined up with an actual road.
I popped out onto the road, thinking it could be nice to walk along a cleared flat surface for a bit. Nearly immediately, however, I heard a car behind me. I very quickly realised that I am a small, feminine person out alone, and noped the hell out of the situation, ducking back into the undergrowth and scurrying quickly off to a safe distance, before turning around to observe.
The car stopped about where I was, and a family got out - mum, dad, and I think two young girls. They looked around, got back in the car, and drove off.
…at which point I realised that what THEY had seen was someone dressed entirely in green and brown medieval clothing (complete with accessories like “actual cloak” and “a very real knife”) pop out of the forest, turn around and see their car, look alarmed, and then run back into the forest.
I wonder if they still talk about me.
*gets dressed up to spend time in the woods alone*

My most recent make is this ancient Minoan ensemble! It consists of a tunic (heanos) worn under a flounced wraparound skirt shaped like a double-bladed axe (labrys). Despite how heavy the linen skirt is, the entire outfit is surprisingly easy to move around in. I even waded into the river to rescue a bee!

Simply compelled to try and crawl into the nearest body of water at all times in full costume. This was back in May at an embroidery event I went to with a friend, absolutely gorgeous location! 🌿
