For context, this is the third video in a series. The first showed users how to create a theme based on their user ID number, used as the hex colour for the header. A second video (not posted to tumblr), showed how to add the Reversi (dark mode) skin as a parent.

Steps not shown in this video:

After logging in, click on your username at the top of the page. Click on Dashboard. Click on Skins. Click on Create Site Skin. Click on Wizard. Scroll down to the section called Colors.

Video description: This is an AO3 tutorial for creating a customized dark mode skin (medium difficulty level). The narrator has a female voice, and she's demonstrating the steps as she shows them on the screen. At the end of the video, you can see the dark mode version that she has created.

Google "hex color". This will provide you with a hex color picker that you can use to find the colours that you like.

Select a dark colour for the background of the site. She chose a dark blue/grey.

Copy the six-digit letter/number combination under the word Hex. Hers was #272a2e. Make sure that you copy the # as well.

Paste that number into the skin wizard in both the Background and Accent color fields.

Go back to the color picker and choose a lighter colour for the text. She chose #bacad9

Paste that into the skin wizard in the Text field.

Go back to the color picker and choose a third colour that will be used as the text colour for fic titles as well as for the header and footer on the site. She chose #4898e8

Make sure that you have a # at the start of all four of your hex colour fields.

Make sure that your skin has a title (otherwise it won't save).

Hit submit.

On the next page, scroll down and hit Use.

Tips for Writing a Difficult Scene

Every writer inevitably gets to that scene that just doesn't want to work. It doesn't flow, no matter how hard you try. Well, here are some things to try to get out of that rut:

1. Change the weather

I know this doesn't sound like it'll make much of a difference, but trust me when I say it does.

Every single time I've tried this, it worked and the scene flowed magically.

2. Change the POV

If your book has multiple POV characters, it might be a good idea to switch the scene to another character's perspective.

9/10 times, this will make the scene flow better.

3. Start the scene earlier/later

Oftentimes, a scene just doesn't work because you're not starting in the right place.

Perhaps you're starting too late and giving too little context. Perhaps some description or character introspection is needed before you dive in.

Alternatively, you may be taking too long to get to the actual point of the scene. Would it help to dive straight into the action without much ado?

4. Write only the dialogue

If your scene involves dialogue, it can help immensely to write only the spoken words the first time round.

It's even better if you highlight different characters' speech in different colors.

Then, later on, you can go back and fill in the dialogue tags, description etc.

5. Fuck it and use a placeholder

If nothing works, it's time to move on.

Rather than perpetually getting stuck on that one scene, use a placeholder. Something like: [they escape somehow] or [big emotional talk].

And then continue with the draft.

This'll help you keep momentum and, maybe, make the scene easier to write later on once you have a better grasp on the plot and characters.

Trust me, I do this all the time.

It can take some practice to get past your Type A brain screaming at you, but it's worth it.

So, those are some things to try when a scene is being difficult. I hope that these tips help :)

We have some amazing artist signed up and ready to work, so its time to throw some writers into the mix!

It’s important that you read the following information carefully before proceeding!

Remind me, what is a bang?

A bang is a type of fan challenge in which writers and artists work together to produce new collaborative content for the fandom.

In a reverse bang, the artist signs up first and creates a sketch, and the writer claims the person they want to write for based on the sketch and summary the artists provide.

This year the theme is alternate universe or universe alteration (canon divergence). It is completely optional!

Who can join?

The event is open to writers of all abilities in any stage of their fandom journey –  a fun opportunity for Kaishin shippers to come together and celebrate the relationship between Kudou Shinichi and Kuroba Kaito in all its variations. 

What are the requirements?

Writers must create a brand new fic of a minimum of 4,000 words.

There is no maximum but all works should be finished and polished by the final deadline (schedule here).

What is the claim process like?

Writers must first sign up using the link below; once the sign-up is submitted writers will follow the link in the form to the claims page to claim their artists as I mentioned here.

Claims are first-come, first-served; it’s recommended to have the wip document open so you can view your options.

Artist-writer partnerships will be announced / confirmed no later than MAY 23.

I just left my husband alone with our two children for sixteen days. I was not worried about anything regarding the house, their food, or their wellbeing. I put all the appointments in the family calendar and my husband checked it and kept them. I literally did not worry about them. I missed them, and I was sad that they missed me, but I didn’t worry about them AT ALL. I need to impress upon you all that I missed their company, but was not worried for their welfare.

I also did no meal prep. I don’t even think I went shopping right before I left.

This is not about apples and oranges. This isn’t even about my husband. This is about the fact that this is apparently WEIRD.

Another mum at my daughter’s school is leaving for ten days. She’s taking her youngest (who is a very small baby) and leaving her husband with their two girls. She has been cooking for days preparing freezer meals. She’s panicking and deputizing her six year old to remind him how to make school lunches. AND I AM APPALLED.

A) He is definitely not helpless. (He’s a doctor or something.) What gendered bullshit. B) THAT LITTLE GIRL IS NOT OLD ENOUGH TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR HER AND HER SISTER’S WELLBEING. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. C) Why is she married to this person and creating children with him if he’s this big of an idiot?

While she was laughingly recounting this, the other mums were nodding and smiling sympathetically, like oh yes, I too have my caveman at home!! Such managing required! I was the only one who was like “Dude, he’ll be fine. Literally. He will be fine.” I said it a lot. She was not convinced. She kept bringing up her older daughter. She’ll be like a little mum!
