I've started a project where I plan to redraw Archie Sonic covers as I slowly go through a re-read of the series. So naturally, the starting point is issue #0 of the mini series!

Exploratory sketches and thoughts below ⤵️

Redrew a few panels as well to try and get used to drawing Classic Sonic. I thought it would be fun to redraw the covers using the original JP designs than the westernized versions.

As for my thoughts, It's very much a product of the 90s and it makes a lot of IRL references that date it a LOT. It's also very gag and pun heavy with not a lot of plot. If you showed someone new to Sonic this issue and then told them how complicated the lore would eventually get, they'd never believe you lol

Also a LOT of fat jokes that just wouldn't slide today. It feels like most insults and jokes directed at Robotnik are poking fun at his weight and it really does feel so...Not Sonic. At least, not where he is now in the official canon. 90s western Sonic was much more rude lmao.

Other than that, not too much to say?? It's fun seeing certain things that contradict game canon down the road, like Sonic being able to swim or Robotnik being anti-fun when Eggman's whole deal is that he wants to take over to make a giant amusement park.

It'll be fun to see how this series evolves as I reread it! The first time I ever fully read Archie Sonic through was like a decade ago when I was still in high school. The series wasn't over then and I had binged 200+ issues in a few days. I think by reading so much in so little time and it being so long, I've forgotten a lot (particularly the stuff that confused me back then because I didn't read the spin offs) so a lot of this will feel like a blind read haha! I attempted a reread back in 2022, but I only got like 15 issues in and my memory of even that is hazy. I'm taking notes in a spreadsheet this time around and will be reading issues multiple times because I plan to do sketches of panels for each issue. By the end of this project, I'll be an Archie Sonic expert lolol

Continuing my Archie cover redraw series with issue #1 of the miniseries !

I feel like the original still draws the eye much easier due to the action lines and dark hatching on Robotnik. Perhaps I should have included some of that into my own piece but oh well!

I posted a timelapse of my piece on BlueSky.

For Robotnik, my series is focused on redrawing the covers as if they stayed true to the original JP game designs. So, while Robotnik in this cover feels far more menacing and angry, I wanted to give a far more quiet menace to Eggman with his signature grin.

Sally in the mean time, I wanted to try and translate her style a bit into the classic Sonic style, while also maintaing her SATAM look. It makes me feel like I'm drawing her a bit chibi haha.

As for my thoughts on the issue...I don't really have any tbqh. It's very basic saturday morning cartoon humor ! Though, I'm not a big fan of miscommunication plots which was the center of the main story of this issue.

This is the issue that tells us Rotor is the tech guy of the group and Antoine here feels a bit less like a punching bag and more capable than the previous issue. Still a punching bag, but, y'know. Less.

It's also the issue where Sally's colours change from blonde hair and red fur to black hair and pink fur. IIRC, she'll have that colour scheme for a little while. I'll still be drawing her with her red hair and brown fur, though I did consider doing the black/pink combo. After all, they gave a canon reason why her colours were different before.

The most important detail of this issue is OBVIOUSLY the fact that Mexico was made canon in Mobius with this issue /j

It'll be several issues into the Actual series before we start seeing any semblance of the wild stories to come, but for now we just silly humor for those 90's 10 year olds.

Here’s a little doodle for an idea I’ve had for a while. What if @the-infamous-man’s fic “Rediscovered Frontiers” took place after “You Looking for a New Best Friend?”

Which would just boil down “what if Bean and Bark were working with Tangle and Whisper during this?” I admittedly haven’t read that far into Rediscovered Frontiers, so idk if this would affect anything beyond the Team Hooligan fight kinda early on, but I think it’d be pretty fun and wanted to doodle it
